Similar situation happened to me a long time ago...I was young and the HC was my OC when I was senior so we had a good relationship and the OC at the time had a good relationship with our HC as well...after my HC and I went to watch a playoff game, I was about to get out of the car and I asked him "Coach, what do you think that I need to work on to be a successful OC in the future?" We talked for a while and he gave me some great things to think about, but during that conversation I was able to give him things to think about as well...it was very good but very unthreatening...for other reasons I ended up moving and helping at another school, but he later told me that if I had not left that I would have been the OC, that I have demostrated a knowledge for the game and a desire to get better...
Knowing many HC's and having had many long coversations about assistants with them, I feel that HC's look just as much if not more at how you work and prepare compared to play calling and scheming when deciding on an OC or DC...
Preparation does not start on Friday...

It is not a waste of time if you get an interview...I applied and interviewed for who knows how many jobs...a lot of them I did not think I truly had a chance but I wanted the experience...I am to the point know where I feel that all I need is an interview and I will truly have a shot...
I was out of the game for two years, came back as a volunteer coach and then relocated after being appointed the DC...before the season even started I applied for a head job, just really wanting to get an interview to get some of the rust of the interview process...well...I got the job...I went from pretty unknown in the area to getting the job in a situation that I did not think I had a chance...
I did not take the job because they did not have a teaching position for me at the school (failed to mention this during the interview process) but the confidence that I know have in the interview made all the other experience certainly NOT a waste of time...

wow...guess North Carolina is not that bad...we finish the regular season on Friday and start the playoffs next week...we play a game a week until the December title games...
We had a situation this year when a rain out had to be rescheduled for a Monday...so teams played Friday, Monday, Friday...that was a mess...many concerns here for health concerns...but apparently it is a fairly common practice in other states...

What were some of the key ideas or things that were discussed?

Wow...if you have been around for about ten years you should have some credibility...I would just say that you thank him for the opportunity however, I will not be returning...I feel that I need a change so that I can continue to learn new ideas and see how other programs are run.

If he is that aggressive then he might be a DE or an OLB type player anyway...just because he runs fast does not mean that he is a DB...of our 3 fastest kids in the program 2 play OLB because they are so aggressive...we have another that is on of our top 5 fastest kids that plays WDE...FWIW...good luck...

Talked to the principal...she is not comfortable displacing a teacher that has been there for a while to bring me in...however, there was a teacher that was displaced to her school...if he is the least senior of the teachers in the department she will displace him and bring me in...if not, then I am staying at my old school...

You guys have validated my thoughts...
This was NOT mentioned during the interview...it was assumed by me and the AD until yesterday morning.
The AP is telling the principal that it WAS mentioned during the interview, the AD is telling her that it WAS NOT mentioned...
I talked to the AD this afternoon and he is PISSED...he said this is the first time in 28 years he has ever heard of this crap...He asked me to give him until Friday at 5 pm...I said certainly...as a professional I thought that was only appropriate. He said at that point then "you need to look out for yourself"
I have NOT resigned my orginal position and I talked to my old/current principal today and he told me that I was cool stay (actually one of the better conversations we have had). He gave me that admin point of view and basically reconfirmed what I knew...that if they wanted to create a position they would...apparently she does not and that shows what kind of support she would have for the program in the future...
I am 98% gonna stay at my old school as the DC, just wanna hear from the new principal...she is going to have to wow me in order for me to take the job though. I had to wow them to get the job, now they are going to have to wow me in order to get me...
Thanks again for the replies...

I was called and offered the head coaching position on Tuesday morning. I accepted and I was able to meet the coaches and players on Tuesday afternoon.
Wednesday, at about 9.45 am I told my old team that I was leaving to become the next head coach at XYZ...At 10.30 am I got a call from the AD at XYZ telling me there is NO TEACHING POSITION for ME. I was not trying to get 2-3 coaches to come with me...just a spot for me.
I told the AD that I could not and would not take the position if could not be in the school. Around 6.00 pm I was on the field with my new team and the principal left me a voicemail about "lots of bad information that I have recieved"....ie, I was told that I would have a teaching position, but that is not the case.
I put in a call to her this morning and I have not heard back...
Has anyone heard of this before?
My gut is telling me to run away as far as these old fullback legs can get me...
I want to be a head coach as bad as anyone...I am ready, but I am not gonna take a job just to get a job.
Am I missing something here, or is my gut telling me right?

We are a one-back no-huddle offense. We like to use multiple formations, so shifts and motions are huge part of what we do. We add a tag to the formation and have them position specific. For example, trade would be for the Y-TE. So if hears "Trade" he knows that he will trade sides of the ball.We will use different words for the different shifts. We use 4 shifts. Trade, Wing, Empty, & Bunch For motion, we just use the position letter and a number (1,2,3,4). 1-short 2- zig-zag 3-across 4- orbit Example would be "Blade Trade X-1" & then the play Did you think that was too much verbage? That is what I am always concerned about. I try to limit my verbage as much as possible... What is "Blade" is that a formation?

Do you play your best athletes both ways? If so, the whole game? Way and a half? Special situations?

We are a in a little different situation but similar enough...we are 0-6 this year...we have scored 20 points in 6 games and we are giving up about 45 points a game. We play hard until the other team scores, then we seem to go through the motions.
I agree with dcohio said...do what is best for the program not the team...but how do you do that when the newspaper is calling for your head coaches job? We have to win now in order to stay around...looking at our schedule, we will probably not win a game...but like I told the HC...we can go 0-11 with kids that want to be out there or 0-11 with guys that are going through the motions...
I guess that is easy to say as an assistant though...

I guess what I was trying to figure out is regardless of the "actual" weight and how it breaks down to long arms and short legs...do you feel that your team is as strong, equal to most of the teams you play or are you the weaker team?

How strong is your team? Meaning how many guys to you have squatting 500 lbs or 400 lbs...cleans, bench, incline...etc....
Since I do not teach (sell real estate in the area, but I am at EVERY practice and meeting) I just found out on Friday night after the game that our strongest player has a 365 squat....our starting DE squats 285...yes maxs out with these numbers...
I know this is weak...but I am not sure how weak it is....any details would be great...thanks in advance...

I am Coach Buck, I have coached at the HS level in NC for 7 years. Unfortunatly, I had to make a financial decision and slide into real estate as couple years ago. However, I have stayed in the game with contact to coaches and scouting for HS and college teams. I have joined a Semi-Pro coaching staff in Wilmington, NC so that will give me my fix until I get back.
I have been a Co-DC at the 4A level (highest in NC) however I consider myself more of an offensive mind. I love the game and I would love to talk football anytime any place.
Thanks, I look forward to learning somethings from you guys and I hope that I can offer somethings for you as well.
Sincerely, Coach Buck CoachBuck@hotmail.com
