We had a poor year as a team and a worse one as an offense. I have 3 seasons as a varsity offensive coach as well as the SP. Teams coordinator. I had 4 years of college coaching experience (1-WR's/2-RB's/1-QB's) as well. I feel I could have put up at least two more TD's each game, just based on play calling. I don't think that the OC coached the QB's to the best of their ability. Week 10 and the Varsity QB could not tell the difference between Cov. 2 and Cov. 3
I just don't know how to approach the HC about the situation. I just feel bad for the players because we are not doing all we can to set them up for success.
PLEASE HELP!!!

What is the relationship between the HC and the current OC like?

The OC was the OC when the HC played at the high school. They had great defenses back then, they averaged 13.8 points a game.
I have a pretty good relationship with the HC, I think!

ooh..tough call. I dont know if I would ask to be OC. I would maybe present things like "hey, you know, if we would _____ in practice, that might help out in game situations" and such. Of course, I think playcalling is terribly overrated, especially at the H.S. level. If you think u can improve performance through practice prep...suggest those things.

Well...take this for what it is worth.
It sounds like the HC and the OC have a strong relationship. If you go in to the HC's office and ask to be promoted to be the OC, that means that the HC is going to have to take the OC duties away from a man he probably looks up to and has a lot of loyalty toward. I don't think it is a stretch to predict that the HC will most likely be put off by your request. Furthermore, the HC might start think that you are after HIS job if you are asking to replace the current OC.
Very dangerous territory that you are treading, IMO.

Honestly, I don't think you can ask for it. The best you can hope for is the HC recognizes both your hard work and the current problem and, on his own, comes to the realization that a restructuring needs to take place.

I used to think that play calling was not that important in high school as well until I saw this years OC at work! Every 1st down it is a run most likely a base dive play. The OC/HC that was at the school for the past 8 years is one of the smartest offensive coaches I have ever been around, and he had been around the college level for 20+ years before coaching at the high school level. The OC now did not coach for the past 8 years, but he still taught at the high school, now he is back into coaching, I think he is a good coach, just don't think he gives the team the best possibility to put points on the board.

Why not inform the HC that your future goals are to one day be an OC?

Coach, I am in in a similiar situation at my current school. Our OC this past year, ( first year OC, him and HC are buddy buddy) was a great coach in some areas, but he coached QB's this year for the first time and he was terrible. We switched to the spread, he was a wing t guy, and never understood the whole year ,even when me and other coaches tried to talk to him, how to apply to concepts of the spread to calling plays. He doesnt know coverages very well, I was up in the box telling him the coverage and what was there and he never listened. He never used the knowledge of what coverage they were giving us to his advantage, he would always randomly 5-6 times a game call a post wheel (once), smash (2-3 times), and flood (2-3). It was bad to say the least. BOTTOM LINE, even if you KNOW you can do a better job, you cant go ask for the OC job. Like other coaches have said, give your opinions on what needs to be done, and if you dont like the situation, try to apply at others schools being an OC.

I love coachd5085's advice here. From the HC's perspective, a guy that "wants to be OC" is probably not the guy that he wants to be his OC. However, a guy that wants to improve practice and the overall functioning of the offense/team at its current state and doesn't say a thing about a promotion, that might be a guy that he would want to promote.
The HC is the one with his butt on the line. He will recognize who should be the OC and make the switch for the betterment of the team and his own butt.

dude, this is not going to happen.
just my experience based on what you have told me.
Your best bet, at anything:
Have it out in the first off-season staff meeting over how you think the offense should be ran, WHY last year's offense didn't work, etc. See where the chips fall.

Similar situation happened to me a long time ago...I was young and the HC was my OC when I was senior so we had a good relationship and the OC at the time had a good relationship with our HC as well...after my HC and I went to watch a playoff game, I was about to get out of the car and I asked him "Coach, what do you think that I need to work on to be a successful OC in the future?" We talked for a while and he gave me some great things to think about, but during that conversation I was able to give him things to think about as well...it was very good but very unthreatening...for other reasons I ended up moving and helping at another school, but he later told me that if I had not left that I would have been the OC, that I have demostrated a knowledge for the game and a desire to get better...
Knowing many HC's and having had many long coversations about assistants with them, I feel that HC's look just as much if not more at how you work and prepare compared to play calling and scheming when deciding on an OC or DC...
Preparation does not start on Friday...
