Our staff this year was given: 2 Polos 2 1/4 Zips 3 t-shirts 2 shorts Hat Shoes Golf Pants for game
As long as I am a HC - I will do everything I can to take care of our staff. The stipend isn’t enough - heck the “gear” isn’t enough… but I want to try to make it clear to the staff they are important.

I have done this for the last 8 years or so as a head coach. It’s a ton of work, but I think it’s worth it.
It can be a moving target with how you adjust the teams - kids quit, kids move out, kids move in… etc
Best part is the draft - you get to see what your “leaders” think of some of their teammates…

Varsity guys get the logo. The entire varsity gets names on their HOME jerseys if in TOTAL they attend 90% of all off season lifts/workouts/practices/Team Camp etc.
If it’s 95% they get their names on the back of both home and away.
The standard before I arrived at my new school was it was for each individual- I didn’t like some with and some without, so we went for the entire varsity.

Thanks guys… I don’t think it’s an issue of the culture needing Rockne or us with a lack/over confidence—- something is off. I think it’s the time between warmups and kick off. I haven’t gone inside in a while bc our locker room is a ways away from the field. Likewise, on the road most locker rooms are far away so we stay on the field. But I may have to switch it up… The only reason we went in was to avoid all the stupid pregame crap. It certainly wasn't because of some rah rah, shake down the thunder speech coming from me. I have no real good reason for not going inside - other than what I listed….

Hey fellas,
I feel like our team comes out flat too often and I would like to hear what other teams do pregame. I’m specifically talking when you take the field? How are things broken up? How long? Do you go back to the locker room? How king before kickoff? Etc
Thanks in advance

No...you may survive it for a year or even longer if your program has been established. However, administration makes or breaks

May I ask why they owe them everything? 1. From a player standpoint 'good players make good coaches'. Period. You won't keep that top shelf SEC job very long without the top shelf talent. 2. From the coaches standpoint that high school coach can be a major roadblock in the recruitment of a player. If you are open and honest with everybody it's better for everyone. As to situations like this one the kids were probably in that 26-30 range on the recruiting board and the coach was looking for feedback, but couldn't get any even though the school was still loving up on his recruits. That makes it hard on the kid getting recruited because he doesn't know what his exact situation is. He's being told "We want you", but doesn't have an offer and the school won't give any honest feedback. HS coach calls, and texts but doesn't get an answer for weeks. Post a tweet and get a text from the University within minutes. Again. The SEC West is filled with some serious douchebaggery on the recruiting trail. Going through a similar deal right now. Yesterday in fact. I actually flat out asked does "Jimmy have an offer or what?" The coach got mad at me for being "combative". We talked for about 30 minutes and in that conversation I was told we are gonna offer but we want to see him on campus again so he can work out for "Coach X". Coach X is on the other side of the ball and he is being recruited by another coach. So I asked "are you looking at him as an offensive or defensive player?" His response "coach I am not sure". It was frustrating to say the least

I agree with others that it is not the core that tends to miss. It's a guy that you hope can help you that usually ends up holding a bag.
I TRY not to get worked up about it. If school stated about the same time we started practice it would be a lot better. Instead we start 24 days later. So we get freshman stragglers every year. Again, usually they are not guys you need that year but it's great to get them in the program.
We can NOT penalize a kid for missing until the first OFFICIAL day of practice (tomorrow) so summer has become more of a conditioning deal.

Just bought NIKE golf shoes for sidelines...
Bermuda is longer on football field than a golf course...so I figure I get the benefits of turf shoes, comfort of tennis shoes and some what water proof abilities of a golf shoe...
We will see how it goes

Just to add to the conversation I don't see this as that much of a stretch if your counting your teaching load.
Monday through Wednesday 7:30 arrive at school 7:45-2:45 teach, plan, game plan etc 3:00-3:30 study hall 3:45-6:30 practice 6:30-7:30 post prx meeting/planning for tomorrow
Wife goes to bed about 10
10-12 watch more film
3 x 14 = 42
Thursday is about the same except we have a JV game that's usually over about 9:30
Usually review script vs anticipated looks for Nother hour or so when I get home
17 hours on Thursday
Friday runs until 1am give it take for a total of roughly 19 hours
Saturday I spend about 6 hours working on game prep
Sunday we meet as a staff for about 4 hours but each coach puts in another 2 hours or so in breakdown and preparation
If my math is right that's exactly 90 hours...that could be off an hour or so depending on the week
If you take the 7 hours a day your supposed to spend on teaching a class its about 55 hours a week on football

Tell the newspaper!!
"I don't know what we are going to do, we have more players than helmets and shoulder pads"
Bet your principal finds money for helmets. Heck even if you have "enough" helmets they might not all be sized right for your kids noggins.

I have been in Raleigh, Jacksonville, Brunswick County, Charlotte and currently just outside of Raleigh...
I don't have another state to compare it to...however, I think pay here is crap for the most part. There are about 20-25 schools that take football as serious as we would all like....and maybe half of those that pay what some of the better states pay.
The state of NC education system is a wreck and charter schools are going to have a huge impact in the next few years.
I have 9 more football seasons in North Carolina and I'm going to another state...

I ask my coaches if they have anything to say. 98% the pass....there is one coach that is more likely to speak but even he usually passes. Then I close with 15-30 secs of reminders and points and we gth home...

We tried it one year...we put our best guys on D with two exceptions. We went 0-11...I refuse to lose with my best players standing next to me on the sidelines. We play guys a way and a half but try have as many kids as possible not start both ways.

We have tried this for years but I am trying something new this year. We have problems with coaches (community guys) being late due to work commitments or an on campus coach getting called into an IEP meeting or something which throws our practice schedule off. Also, it has caused some tension on the staff because the offensive staff and the defensive start complaining on about the other unit etc...
So what I am trying this year is to have each coach partner up with an other coach and coach a position on both sides of the ball. Two coaches coach WRs and they also coach DBs...etc...HOPEFULLY, if one coach is missing due to another obligation we do not have the revamp the whole practice schedule on the fly.
Also, we are planning on practicing everyone together to start practice. We will stretch, do special teams (JV vs. Varsity for the most part) go to Indy O and and Indy D as a program and then the JV HC/OC and the JV DC will split off (with atleast one other coach that may rotate) and take the JVs for the last hour of practice. They will do what they think is needed for prepare the game and the varsity will work more group/7v7/Inside Run,etc.
It looks great on paper...hope it works!

If freshman or sophomores are going to play roughly 50% we bring them up. If not we keep them down. We can 8 quarter kids too

We play our guys a way and a half...meaning we try not to start anyone on both sides of the ball. So we practice both sides all four days, however we have an offensive focus and defensive focus day. I do not like missing a day working on game prep during the week.
Monday Specials, Indy O, Install O, Team O, Indy D, Install D, Team D
Tuesday Specials, Tackle circuit, Indy D, Team D, Indy O, Group O 1, Group O 2, Team O
Wedn opposite Tuesday
Thursday is run through

It's all relative imo....most of the time when a younger coach gets a HFC job they were either promoted or they took a job that's not a "great situation".
I took my first head on at 29...I wasn't ready for all the extra BS but the only way to truly be ready is to jump in and learn.

Almost 8 years ago I stumbled onto this website while out of the game (my dumba$$ thought selling real estate would be better than coaching) and I was ready to get back to work.
Thanks for the convos and all the details...
The Xs and Os are easy...its the details that many of you have helped me clean up are what has helped me become a better coach.
Thank you...

I'm in NC...we go Monday through Thursday. Due to our kids and parents usually working until about 530pm we have workouts from 530-830pm. We usually start on the track to warm up and condition, weights and core, the we practice.

It's a great boost to a program. After year around lifting, spring, summer practices, the grind of the year it's a boost to the kids.
I do t let our kids wear flashy stuff on their own we wear basically everything as a team. We got black uniforms two years ago. We don't wear them often we rotate but it's a thing our kids look forward to.
I love the grays I just need more $$.

I had to be HC/OC/DC/SC/ strength guy the past two years. It's not ideal, nor is it really fun. However, as the HFC you must do what you feel gives your program the best chance to be successful. Just appointing someone that hasn't earned a leadership role or isn't ready or commited to the details needed to coordinate is more detrimental to the program than the added stress and responsibility you add to yourself. IMO But I am looking for a DC and a strength guy?

Concussions arent reducing the pool of football players as much as it is the laziness in the todays youth is growing. Look at the child obesity rates...kids are fat for a reason...they dont do anything. Sure they dont eat as clean a diet as they once did. However, the foods are not that much worse than all the fried food and carbs that the old timers survived on. The difference is the kids are not active. They sit on twitter, XBox, iphone, etc...they are in the AC all day and they do not want to work!
Add to the fact that most of the better athletes seem to have hoop dreams. Basketball plays inside and they dont really practice...they roll the balls out and play. AAU steals kids/parents money but everyone is happy because little Johnny is playing and coach is getting paid!
Lazy kids and a lazy society is the problem...not concussion!
