I was looking at the Iowa High School football playoff brackets and noticed that those boys will be playing 4 games in a 2 week time span. Thats a lot of football with not much recoup time. Minnesota is not much better. Any other states have anything like that.

we have three games in eight days which is a joke.i was wondering if anyone has an study info on how many days are required before a game.there are so many studies these days, maybe someone has looked at that. we get very banged up every time we have one of these stretches.the playoffs should be the most NB games of the year and often are bunched together in our league because of poor planning.

As a coach in Iowa, it is very difficult, but also exciting. We practiced Saturday and Sunday (regular Monday and Tuesday practices). We have a normal Wednesday practice tonight and Thursday tomorrow. Wednesday is game day. If we win, we turn around and play on Monday. The thing that sucks, though, is when the IHSAA sticks a team with a late game (8:45 pm) on a school night. It usually after 2:00 am before most of us get to bed, and then the kids are supposed to function at school the next day? I do wish from that standpoint, the IHSAA would reconsider that.

Kansas small school schedule is brutal with the Thursday, Tuesday, Saturday schedule it often comes down to who can stay the healthiest.
Hopefully after next year they will shuffle the classifications and get rid of the Tuesday game!

Why do they not just play one game a week in the playoffs like in the regular season?

What is the reason for these schedules? We go week by week here in PA, Fri/Sat for the games and play till early Dec. for the state title. Just currious as to why the wacked out schedule? is it weather related? Lack of facilities at the time of year? Or just some weird thing that has always been done?

In wisconsin I believe it has to do with finishing before Thanksgiving weekend. We play the final reg season game on Wed or Thursday, they announce pairings on Friday and you play on Tuesday. The second round is that Saturday and rounds 3 and 4 are the following saturdays.
You could start the season earlier, but we already get out of school in nearly mid-June.

In Kansas it's because the KSHSAA made the decision long ago that Kansas is a basketball state and nothing can interfere with the beginning of basketball season. We've got to get all those pesky football games out of the way before we start playing basketball in December. (kidding, but just barely) The activities association in Kansas doesn't allow any seasons to overlap.

The thing about all of these are that the both teams are in the same boat. They each have the same amount of time to prepare. Make the best of the situation you're in.

In wisconsin they want to get done because of deer hunting season.. now I know some of you are laughing right now but you have to understand how big white tail deer hunting season is. annually about 600,000 hunters go hunting trying to bag one of 1.5 million deer. If you want to hunt white tail deer wisconsin in the premier place.

No doubt about that, it is a nice problem to worry about though if you are worried about kids missing to go hunting since that means you are pretty far into the playoffs. Also I love the possibility of playing Thanksgiving weekend, nothing like a nice practice on Thanksgiving morning then eating your a$$ off later that day.

Here in Minnesota we finish the regular season on a Wednesday. There is no school the Thursday and Friday b/c of Minnesota Education Association convention. So we practice those days. Then the playoffs open Tuesday. If you win you turn around and play Saturday. After that it's a week in between the rest of the rounds.

wow...guess North Carolina is not that bad...we finish the regular season on Friday and start the playoffs next week...we play a game a week until the December title games...
We had a situation this year when a rain out had to be rescheduled for a Monday...so teams played Friday, Monday, Friday...that was a mess...many concerns here for health concerns...but apparently it is a fairly common practice in other states...

Here in Kansas the smaller schools (4A-1A/2A and 8-man) finished regular season last Thursday (week ago today) and played first round this past Tuesday and play second round Saturday. The bigger schools (6A & 5A) finished last Friday and play a game each week on Friday except for state game which is on Saturday. The Activities Association wants to get football over by Thanksgiving weekend.

Missouri Small schools (classes 1-4) is very similar to what I see in Iowa. To make a long story short, they want to finish all the games so they can have the championship games on Thanksgiving weekend
Final Reg Season Game: Thur/Fri/Sat (Oct 30-Nov 1) Regional Game: Wed (Nov 5) Sectional Game: Mon (Nov 10) Quarterfinal Game: Sat (Nov 15) Semifinal Game: Fri (Nov 21) Championship Games: Fri (Nov 28) or Sat (Nov 29)

Our finals are the week before Thanksgiving in Iowa. Last regular season game was October 24. In other words last regular season game to semifinals would give them 4 games in 15 days basically. OUCH. Survival of the fittest for sure, and now factor in snow and cold for tonight. At least the semifinals and the finals are held in the UNI Dome. Even that has it's drawback as they still play on the same turf I played on there in college which was back in the early 90's. The old style turf is very hard on the body (just ask my knees, ankles, and hips every morning.) LOL.

In SC the season ended on 10/31 for 1A-3A, and the first round starts today 11/7. 4A starts po next week. Most if not all games are on Fridays, with a week break between each game. The semifinals are the day after thanksgiving (2A and up) (1A championship), with the finals at Clemson this year on 12/5 and 6. The move to Clemson has angered many in the state just because of the location in the NW corner of the state. Has been at Williams-Brice in Columbia for years, but Clemson said that it made an unfair recruiting edge for the gamecocks. I thought that the location was perfect, central location, with easy access for everyone in the state.
