We were playing the team in the next town over, they were awful, had been 1-9, 2-8 for the last 4-5 years. We show up and one of their corners is wearing Superman socks with the capes. He is talking $h!t to our receivers all night, the funny thing was we did not throw the ball once the entire game. We were a triple option team and they had no idea how to stop midline or Inside veer. We ran for over 500 yards and beat them 49-6 (they had their starters in the entire second half and scored on our "special kids", they failed on the 2-point conversion) with our starters playing one series in the second half. But this kid ran his mouth all night. At one point our 2nd or 3rd string receiver pancaked him on an outside run. Our receiver got up and told him that he had nothing to talk about, the opposing player then shot back with "none of you have a catch on me!" Our entire sideline busted up laughing, we couldn't help it at that point it was so ridiculous.

As a kid growing up in Kansas, I can honestly say that Kansas State was not even on my radar for attending college. However, by the time I was in ready to make my decision about where to attend college Bill Snyder had done his magic and Kansas State was rolling. My decision to attend Kansas State was based on the fact that I wanted to be a part of that culture and excitement. I did not choose Kansas State based on much else. So in my humble opinion the football program boosted the enrollment at Kansas State, enrollment has gone up tremendously and Alumni contributions are up as well. In that sense the football program is responsible in a direct way for increased revenue at the college

Been dealing with this the last year. I applied for the HC job at my current teaching job, did not get the job, they hired someone who had no previous HC experience but came from a team that played for the state title the year before. I was a little bitter so I applied for a teaching job at the rival high school, that was supposed to be open (the teacher decided at the last minute not to retire and come back for another year) I had already been hired by the football program (because we all thought she was retiring). Decided to coach at the rival high school anyway. The new HC at my teaching job told the players not to talk to me even though I was as helpful as I could be with the transition (I had been doing all the offseason stuff while the hiring process was going on). The school I teach at sees the game as a big rivalry while the school I was coaching at sees it as a bump in the road (the school I teach at hasn't beaten the school I coach at in 23 years).
School I coach at imploded they fired the DC midseason (I was promoted on a Tuesday for the game that week) the HC is put on administrative leave and we still went to the second round of the playoffs. We beat the school I teach at pretty easily despite them stealing my signals during the game. I had a few of the kids give me grief but most of the kids understood and showed me love when we played.
The school I coach at goes on this long search for a new HC and wont tell us anything during the process. They finally hire a guy and I told him that I wanted to be in the building if I was going to coach there. Long story short, the principal didn't even call me for the interview that he set up with me for the open teaching position. So I am not coaching there anymore, but I have been hired at another high school in district for teaching and coaching. Can't wait for the fresh start and change of atmosphere.

Make sure you cover the difference between credit recovery and actually taking the class again. Too many student athletes think they can do credit recovery and still be eligible for college sports. Most of the counselors don't understand the difference

I used snap raise in the past and was very disappointed in them. They nickle and dimed us for every penny and then when it was time to cut the check they took for ever to get it to us. That was my last year as an HC so I haven't been in charge of fundraising and I am at a school now where the booster club does all the fundraising (such a blessing!). Maybe snap raise has gotten better but if there is another company out there I would look at them before snap raise. Also, make sure and read the fine print.
When they tell you they will give you a higher percentage for a certain number of emails make sure it is total emails and not per kid. We had well over the number of emails sent out to bump us up to the next percentage level but since every kid didn't have the minimum emails (you will always have kids that don't participate, or parents that don't want to participate by helping their kid with the emails) we were left at the lower percentage. That was not explained to us when we signed on to do the fundraising.

I have it on PDF if you send me your email I will send it to you, I am in the same boat that I am not going to pay that much for a copy. Don't sleep on your local Library. Our Library here is awesome in that they can do a lot of inter-library loans. Most of the "rare" and expensive books that I have been able to read have come this way, the University of Georgia and East Carolina University is where most of them have come from.

I named my crew, they were the Rhinos, there was no high school in our area with that mascot so it was uniquely ours. A herd of Rhinos is called a Crash and the boys LOVED that. They came up with a hand signal that they would throw up during the day.
We did t-shirts, one of our players who didn't make grades was allowed to stay on the team until he was eligible and when he became eligible he earned the starting center position. We were playing a team that had a really good nose guard and we built it up all week how tough it was going to be for our center to beat this guy. Game day gets here and not only did our center beat him but he had one block where he got the kid off his feet and deposited him in grand fashion, one of those "ohh $h!t" blocks. Our Center stands up foaming at the mouth and yells at the guy "What's the taste ground like!!" We all stopped including the refs and opposing players and everyone just looked at each other, with a WTF did he say?
We score and O comes off the field and everyone is hoopin and hollerin and giving our Center grief, next week we had t-shirts made up with Rhinos on the back and a patch of grass on the front with the quote "What's the Taste Ground Like" they loved it!!

The follow up to my previous post would be that there is no way that kid had taken enough hits to have developed CTE, could he have had some mental issues, most definitely. I don't think that should excuse the behavior but it should be looked into and that starts at home, from there the people who are around them should step in and you would think with the resources that an NFL team would have at their disposal this could be addressed especially with the amount of money these teams put into these players.

We had an incident similar to this, it was JV game and our Varsity HC had a policy that if someone messes up you take them out coach them up and when they can get back in, send them back in. It had been the same all year, kids expected it. This player didn't squeeze the down block got obliterated by the pulling guard and they had a big run. His position coach pulled him out and the kid lost it, shoved the coach, threw his gloves, helmet, stripped off his shoulder pads and yelled at his mom in the stands to come get him. His position coach tried to talk to him and had him by the shoulders in a "look at me so I can talk to you" way. Kid shoves him again and by this time the mom was there and she took him home.
Next day the dad and the kid show up in the coaches office and myself (I was the head JV coach) and the Varsity HC were there. Dad is telling us that we need to let him back on the team and that our coach should not have put hands on his kid etc. We both agreed that he did not deserve to be allowed back and told the dad. Later that afternoon I was pulled out of class by the Principal and told that the kid was to be allowed back an that was all that was going to be said about the incident. Turns out the dad owned a car dealership that sponsored our scoreboard and threatened to pull the money if we didn't allow his son to play. I had to allow the kid back but I did not play him even in garbage time.
As the year went on the kids behavior got more and more erratic, I had him in class and he sent me a homework project over email that was a picture of guy flipping the bird. When I reported to our AP, the AP suspended him for a day and then the mother came down and said that he had asked her to email his project and she had sent the wrong file. He was back in school the next day.
The kid transferred to another school after the school year, not sure what happened to him after that

If you have hand-outs make them supplemental to your talk, rather than a copy. Once it becomes clear that they have everything on paper they figure that they don't have to listen since they can just read it later. Draw up your diagrams the right way, with your team on the bottom so that what's right or left on the diagram is also the listeners' right or left. I don't know why but this just struck me, I am a defensive guy and have always drawn the plays with the offense on the top of the page and the defense on the bottom and never really thought about why I did it that way (hudl's default is backwards so you have to flip it). I was today years old when I read this and realized that is why you draw it that way! HaHaHa, thank you for this.

We bought new pants a few years back and they don't require belts so now we just loop 7-8 jerseys through with a belt that we don't use for anything else now and wash them that way. I do like the idea of looping them by numbers.

We just got one of those giant scoreboards with the jumbo tron and lots of space for ads. Does anyone have a list of prices they charge to have a name on one of these things? Our AD told us we could have first dibs on selling the spaces and keep the money so we are very motivated to get this done.
Also, does anyone sell things like first down and red zone. I was watching some of the state championships on the nfhs site and they kept calling out things like "bob's towing red zone" and "tony septic service 1st down" (not the actual calls but hopefully you get the idea.) Any input would be appreciated.

I did shirt and tie and let the boys decide if they want to wear their Jerseys. The last year I was there we did a fundraiser through x-grain where we got $5 back on each piece of cloth purchased. I told the boys that if everyone bought the sweat suit (pants and hoodie) they could wear that on game day. I think the final cost of the whole outfit was $65 or $75 dollars. I had 2 or 3 kids that couldn't afford it, but we bought them theirs out of the football budget. The program made a little money and I have to say the kids looked pretty good and the boys loved that they didn't have to wear ties anymore.

The only thing I will tell a kid is that hair hanging from the helmet is part of the uniform and can be used to make tackles. We had a stud RB who had dreads, he came over to the sideline and told us that the other team was pulling his hair, I told him either cut the hair of quit complaining. Next series he went out and was plowing through the middle on trap someone grabbed his hair and yanked after the play was over the tackler handed him one of his dreads. That had to have hurt, but he never cut his hair

People are complaining that this was a boring Super Bowl, while others will talk about the great defense that was played. My question is that if the NFL is going to sell this as a great defensive battle, why did an offensive player get the MVP? Don't get me wrong I think Edelman had great game but if you only have one touchdown scored in the whole game and the guy getting the MVP didn't score it. This is the greatest QB in NFL history and the best offense in the NFL this season and they didn't manage a TD between them until the middle of the 4th quarter. Where is the love for the Defense?
The NFL is all about the offense and they want to remind the fans that "Yes there was some great offense in this game"

Not a classic and I am a chiefs fan. These are the best athletes in the world at there sport and they give up 105 points in a game? Watching NFL defenses this season has been a huge disappointment. I will continue to watch the chiefs when I can get them on TV but other than that I will be watching college where they at least try to play defense. Big 12 ? Kansas State held Texas Tech to 6 points and they held Iowa State to 21 until their melt down in the 4th quarter last night. But most of college football will still try and find a way to play defense.

My daughter was an athletic trainer at Mizzou she asked the Head Trainer why the players don’t take a knee during an injury, she had been a student trainer at her high school and they had always taken a knee, the head trainer told her that they didn’t want the players to tighten up so they were told to get water and move around. That was good enough for me. We stopped taking a knee and when parents complained I told them the same story I just told here, we got some flack the first couple of games but after that nobody said anything.
In California we were allowed to bring the players to the sideline and get them water and talk to them, never had any official tell us we had to stay on the sideline and the players had to stay at the numbers. As the HC I would always go out to check on the player that was injured and on the way out or the way back I would always coach up the boys on whatever they needed.

I am amazed how many of those I see, not just on athletes. Doctors are putting them on for any little pain a kid has in his leg. The other one that baffles me is the crutches with nothing else on the legs, no brace on the knee, no boot on the foot, no cast, just I want to hobble around on crutches all day.

Our season came to end last night and the players turned in gear after the game. Myself and another coach were putting away gear and started looking at the massive stack of Thigh Pads that did not even come off the shelf this year as all of our kids had girdles with the thigh pad included. So my question is does anyone take old thigh pads to recycle or does anyone have any ideas what we could do with 50+ pairs of thigh pads?

We sent our kids to a volleyball game, not sure if they had their jerseys on or not, and they had an absolute blast. Not sure they’d give the same reaction at a band competition, but I don’t think there’s any harm in it at all. Band chicks don’t look like volleyball chicks and don’t wear spandex shorts But if they did...

Not to thread Jack but something I saw that I thought was interesting was a youth league (5th and 6th grade, I think) was doing full pads but no tackling. The kids still blocked and all the plays were the same but the kids did not tackle they tagged off 2 hands style. The coaches said it gave them time to really focus on the fundamentals of the game without having kids line up and run into each other trying to make a big tackle. Just thought it seemed like an interesting idea

x-grain will give you $5 an item but they have a much more limited selection mostly sweatshirts and sweatpants. But our kids and parents loved the stuff. They set up a store for you, and the stuff shows up bagged up with the persons name on it. If it was a kid on the team we handed it to them and were done, if it was a fan we had it at our merchandise table at the games and they could pick it up. X-grain will deal with all the returns or issues so you don't have to. www.x-grain.co/ I dealt with Fan Cloth once and will never go back. We were a decent size school but we have a good amount of multi-sport athletes. Our baseball team was using fan cloth and having success and he recommended it to me. Fan cloth sent me the exact same catalog as the baseball team (with the baseball teams logo) but just changed the word baseball to football on all the merchandise. When I told them that I couldn't sell this stuff because most of the families had already bought it they just blew me off.

I thought I would share something funny that happened on Friday.
I let the kids choose the music for the after school weight room and I only have 2 rules;
1. It has to be clean, no cussing, n bombs, etc
2. No D-jaying, put it on pandora and let it play, ads and all. I can't stand it when guys stare at the phone for 5 minutes trying to find "the song" to do their next set.
Fridays are makeup days for us, if you missed a day during the week you can come in and make it up on Fridays. Usually a smaller crowd. We had about 10 guys on Friday and one kid in particular who suffered a pretty freak injury last year in practice and ended up missing the season. He has been busting his butt because he wants the starting QB job on Varsity this year.
He came in asked if he could play his music, picked his station and got to work. About half way through his lift he asked to use the bathroom. Left the weight room and a seconds later the music stopped and we were given a full report on the Cavaliers/ Celtics up coming series from ESPN complete with that loud mouth Steven A. Smith. A few minutes later he returned to the weight room and everyone started cracking up. He had no idea why we were laughing at least it wasn't porn.
