I've heard multiple people and media outlets call last night's Chiefs/Rams game an instant classic. Did I miss something? I thought it was a good game, but not in the realm of instant classic material. By the end, it started feeling like I was watching the circus or a Big 12 game. There has to be some semblance of competitive defense for it to be a classic in my opinion.
Or maybe I'm just old....

Not taking a side on this, but both defenses are top in the league I believe.

And weren't there 3 defensive scores? And how many turnovers?

Based on total yards given up, LA is 29th and KC is 32nd.
I only watched the second half of the 4th quarter, but that's not an instant classic in my opinion. The 9-6 Alabama-LSU game was an instant classic a few years ago in my opinion, but I also coach defense so that's what I like to see.

Was actually going to use the 9-6 game as something we were told as an instant classic but I thought was dull. same concept, just flipped fact is, those that label this games whatever are typically looking from an entertainment value perspective not from a technical standpoint, both of which are up to the individuals watching.

Lots of scoring so the fans loved it. I believe that this is why the media is calling it a classic.
The Media people sell tickets, too! Part of their schtick. The owners love that.

So going by this, are all the Big 12 regular season games now classics?

So going by this, are all the Big 12 regular season games now classics? Why would anyone consider any games outside of the power 5 conferences classics?

These days, I'd much rather watch a game with two sound defenses on display over a shoot-out. Generally because I get visibly frustrated when I watch bad defensive football. These high scoring games we're seeing at all levels drive me nuts because they're not generally a clinic on offensive football but a game where I can count the number of missed tackles on s single play on two hands.

Saw on Twitter someone mentioned it along with the '06 USC-Texas Rose Bowl... Not even close, imo.
Don't get me wrong it was an exciting game, but not a classic. But I do believe it was exactly what the NFL wants, as it was a sexy game to the casual fan.

Not a classic and I am a chiefs fan. These are the best athletes in the world at there sport and they give up 105 points in a game? Watching NFL defenses this season has been a huge disappointment. I will continue to watch the chiefs when I can get them on TV but other than that I will be watching college where they at least try to play defense.

The NFL is a "Reality" TV show. It is about entertainment, ratings, and the resultant commercial sponsorship and network dollars.
That means offense which means passing and TDs to "excite" the casual viewer.
Thus what balance and competition still exists between offense and defense is heavily skewed by the rules towards the former.

Kansas State held Texas Tech to 6 points and they held Iowa State to 21 until their melt down in the 4th quarter last night. But most of college football will still try and find a way to play defense.

I liked it. I thought it was a pretty exciting game and I normally find shootouts dull.
What I think made it a "classic," in addition to all the offense, was:
1. These were the two best teams in the league fighting for supremacy--this game will likely turn out to be much better than the Super Bowl. 2. All the lead changes (didn't the lead change something like 8 times, with 3-4 of those in the 4th quarter?) 3. Highlight reel play after highlight reel play 4. Three defensive scores 5. Major plays in the kicking game, both for good and bad.
Typically, these shootouts involve one team jumping out to an early lead and then just adding to it while the other team keeps matching them, but stays behind. This one was tight the whole way and there were big swings in momentum throughout.
It was also good that both teams were hyped through the roof in a way you normally don't see from jaded NFL players who just want their paychecks. That atmosphere in the game made it a lot more exciting to watch, like a big college rivalry game.
