He may not be on your staff right now but everybody knows "that" coach. Chances are if you don't know him, you are him. The defense/offense has played poorly to start the year so this coach knows all the fixes and solutions to get the offense/defense performing to the expectation. The solutions are rarely tech based and almost always has to do with scheme or Player X should move to Position X. When you watch film you notice none of the tech that was supposed to be taught is being used. My question is how do most of you go about handling that coach?

Usually make fun of him to the point of tears. Hard part is having any respect from the staff after wiping my tears away.

Usually it's a young guy. Just do your best to let him know that Tech is the way to go. Cure the ignorance.

I go with salty remarks... "And you've been doing this how long....... " "And you've been a DC before..... ?" "Where?....OOOOOOK" And then simply say... Show me, on the white board, how we line up in our base front and what do we do coverage wise. Simple things. Draw it. I think that's "Engage 8" from Madden "Coach". That's not our stuff.

I usual approach is hand him the call sheet during the meetings and say "Ok how about you run the show this week?" follow that up with "how do you plan to line up to formations X,y,z this week?" also "What is their bread and butter and what do you plan on running to try and get them out of it?"

Then I go into film break down and go over all the plays where it was assignments missed and bad tech.

Lol we had a former defensive assistant come out to help at our HCs request. According to him the defense can stop everything we do, and what he does not understand is that any defense can stop anyone if they know what they are doing. Its just funny when hes over scout team D, and listens to the playcall and tries to get the kids to stop our play rather than give us a look. I really think alot of these guys are out there to make it a competition, but like you guys said, I asked him casually what he likes on offense and he said "JET SWEEP!!" .... LOL

This happened to us in our first 8th grade game last night. We are doing an awesome job, running zone read and power read just like you draw it up. Our B team QB is not a good thrower at all, but our initial B team QB is too good on defense to take off of A team. So we have to run a lot, but we are good at it. Occasionally we can hit a hitch or quick screen, but we stick to what we are good at.
So the third quarter kicks off, and we start our offensive drive. We are up 20-0. 3 and out. No big, we didn't even get to a 4th down in the 1st half. A freshman coach jogs on over from where he is standing and goes "Coach!!! That backer is FLYING in every time! Throw the slant, its right there!" Apparently he didn't see the scoreboard, or the 5 hitches we tried the first half that all either 2 hopped the receiver or got batted down by the end.

Our DC, who has been the DC for the past 4 years, literally said, "Give me the 11 worst kids on the team, I'll stop your 11 best on offense all day, every day." Which would be great if it were true but it's not. We literally have to score north of 42 every single game or we're going to lose. Most of the teams we play sling the ball and our defensive backs are just terrible. How do I handle it? I don't, I ignore it because he's the HC's father in law and I just do my job.

I can relate to this as well. The obsession that some coaches have that they think they can just out coach everyone. And maybe they can, but not with a bunch of kids who don't want to be out there. Lol

I was always told if we ran a 3-4 we could stop everyone on defense. Apparently the 4-3/4-2-5 only works in college and not high school.

"Hey coach if we just ran a 5-2 or a 6-2 no body would be able to run against us ever. There are just too many holes in a 4-3". It drives me crazy.

I used to coach with "that" guy. We called him the "whiteboard wizard." His position group was routinely our weakest link.
