We shoot for anything under 2 points per possession (Defensively speaking). We average 10-12 Drives on defense per game. That's 20-24 points. Should win the majority of those games.
Teams that no huddle may get 15 possessions. Holding them to 20 points means a lot more than a ground and pound team who only gets 8-9 possessions against you.

We don't give out awards at the banquet voted on by kids or coaches. Too may ways for a parent to take offense. We talk about team stuff, announce every kid for their letter to certificate, and then talk about local or state awards (All County, All Region, All State)...etc.
We recognize the captains and our seniors and we call it a year. BY FAR the best way I have seen it done. Eliminates the BS.

"Work harder, focus, sense of urgency, and leadership"? You're not doing that already? If you were, you wouldn't need feedback from teenagers. Not sure what running down someone else's program gains you here? He does it a certain way, and you do it a different way. A lot of ways to skin the cat. The OP was asking about ideas for 1 on 1 meetings, not your permission to hold them. We are just offering suggestions.

1. How did you feel the season went? 2. Looking back, what is one thing you would have done differently? 3. What did I do well/not well as a coach. What can I improve on to help you improve? 4. What are your goals for the off season (underclassmen) 5. What are the team goals for 2016? 6. One thing I dont know about you that I need to know. 7. What makes you tick? What motivates you?
Things along these lines are what I always start with. Then the conversation usually branches off from here. With graduating seniors it gets fun. You can ask for full disclosure about your coaching style, motivation techniques, practice drills etc. They can be honest because you don't coach them anymore. This is where you can really improve..."Coach, you screamed at me that one day in practice and I lost a ton of confidence and it really affected me the rest of the year" etc. Very eye-opening.

What kind of "young coaches" are we talking about here? 9th grade? JV? Varsity?
If you are hired to be a varsity coach, I would be furious as a HC with a coach regardless of age who "kept his mouth shut" during meetings. Don't hire a guy as a varsity coach if you don't want his opinion.
I think 9th and JV coaches should always defer to the varsity staff on things.
Coaches IN General should:
1. Do things that need to be done. Take pride in the program and make it better. ADD VALUE. 2. Stay within the schemes and offer well-thought out ideas and ANSWERS. 3. DO YOUR JOB. Simple, but often over looked.
I wouldn't want a coach on my staff, regardless of age, who didn't want to contribute and add value to the program beyond field work. If you want to sit back while others do the grunt work (unless you are a coordinator or HC) then I don't think many HC's would want to hire guys like that regardless of whether they are young or old.

We open every off-season with the lion and the gazelle.
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”

A win is a win (unless you are undefeated champs every year). No one remembers WHO you beat. 1-0 is always better than 0-1.

1. Stay on schedule towards getting first downs 2. Shorten the game 3. Create turnovers on defense 4. Don't give up big plays (make THEM beat you) 5. Eliminate Negative Plays 6. Do not, under any circumstances, ever turn the football over.

Another thing that doesn't necessary go with the thread (I'm not trying to hijack) - being members on CoachHuey, we are all probably part of the group that does these things. You can kind of take that for granted here - assuming most guys are on here being proactive and trying to get better, we all try to add value. The question is, as a HC, and assistants as well, how do we get our colleagues we coach with to have the same mentality? I think it's starts with you. Then as you move up, find guys to mentor. Talk to them about this idea. SHOW them what it looks like. Invite them to help. Nothing gets a competitive guy going like seeing his superior busting his butt while he is sitting around chewing the fat.

All Coaches are in. Just the Varsity and Key backups. JV players get to sleep in (unless they are key varsity players) because they have a game that day. After JV is over they all come in to learn how to act the next year.

Just wanted to get an idea of what y'all think the next revolution/evolution will be in football. Talking more about high school and college than the pros. We had the spread offense's rise, now the thing seems to be packaged plays. What will be the next thing to come along? Im thinking it will be 2 things. 1) veer will continue making a comeback 2) 3 back personnel groups Stop encouraging people to run the veer. I want to be the only 1. In the world. Then people might think I'm smarter than I really am!

Whatever works for you guys! I have found that if they sleep, the body has a hard time waking up and getting going. I was focus (read the game plans and music). We get a quick light lift and stretch in before the game to excite the nervous system. They usually sleep/laze through the game day anyway. We want them to wake up and get rolling towards the game. We want it like a boulder rolling down the hill. Potential energy to kinetic and all of that. A million ways to skin a cat. You expect the boulder to keep rolling through the whole two hour ride? It varies if the trip time is longer. We still dont want them sleeping that close to game time. If it is really long we will do another warm up and plyos when we get there to 'wake them up' again.

Coaches,
Do any of you all 2 platoon with all 3 levels WITHOUT a separate 9th grade staff? We have all 3 levels and are looking for a way to practice as close to 2 platoon as possible, while giving the 9th grade enough attention. Is it possible?

Do you run RZ efficiency as a %? We do. What % do we hold them to a FG and what % do we get them out without points.

1. Turnover Margin 2. Redzone Efficiency (TD's v. FG's) 3. 3rd Down Eff.

Does anyone have a checklist or timeline you use for field maintenance? I have always coached where we had turf game fields and may be relocating to grass. One of the many issues I have never thought about.
Thanks,

Get them to the trainer ASAP. Gone are the days of "toughen up" etc. Not worth the risk especially at the high school level. If they are trying to get out with a headache they are not someone I want to trust on a Friday Night anyway if they are lying. So let the trainer take care of it.

They need to understand that those trainers will NEVER be as inveated in that kid like you. I worked in the field for 4 years. It is about money and keeping them coming back. However, if they are getting more out of that than your stuff, it may be time to evaluate your training methods and catch up.

It has alot to do with video games, fantasy football ("I can mange a team"), over analysis of games on TV by people who usually just spit out cliches and coach speak.
Information is much easier to come by making a higher number of people "know just enough to be dangerous"
