I don't like it, but more from a classroom perspective than football perspective. Our practices have been pretty good this week, actually.

No one hated it more than my mentor, Ed Bolin!!! At the end of the first practice of Homecoming week he would go on a little soap box that made fun of the tradition of decorating a hay wagon and boys dressing as queen candidates and all other stupidity that goes on during the week. He would do his best to show his disdain to the point the players would not discuss it around him or tell them if they had been drafted for such tomfoolery! It was just a hoot to watch how he hated it and in the end when it was bonfire time he was the first one there and rah rah all the way!!
I miss his crazy old ass!

Do any of you guys hate it as much as I do? Our guys aren't allowed to take part in any Homecoming stuff that conflicts with football. They can make all the paper flowers for the float that they want AFTER practice. If they get nominated for Homecoming court they will not be going out at halftime. We're a big school. Our part is winning the game. Let the other guys have their fun.

I hate Homecoming. And we play two of them.
That being said, this year has been much better. Our kids are just a better group of kids and it's showing in practice.

Ditto, I dont really mind all the little festivities that go on, I actually think they are pretty funny and harmless. But my work/classroom duties have been thrown out of whack because of all the extra BS that comes with Homecoming Week. it's always hard to get the students back in a solid routine the week after that.

I just can't wrap my head around 'Homecoming'..... Isn't 'Homecoming' about the folks that graduated from the school, left, and are trying to reconnect with THEIR classmates?

Do any of you guys hate it as much as I do? I probably hate it more than anyone else. The other coaches on our staff don't seem to care and thinks it's all fun and games. It always seems to be about everything but the football game. Our kids always tend to lose focus and play terrible. Luckily, being an assistant I don't have to deal with all the extra crap (parade, organizing) I just get to sit back and prep for a game.

We lose practice time so our boys can drill and work on parade stuff (Military school). Last year was our first Homecomming win in, well, ever. When I was at a public school, it wasn't that big of a deal. We were pretty focused, lost JV practice on Thursday so we could go to the parade.

Its cool for my son because he gets to ride with me in a fire truck. Other than that, I don't have much use for it.

One of the reasons I don't like it at the high school level: students have no idea what "Homecoming" actually is. I don't quite get it either. Probably one of the reasons that I don't care about Homecoming is that we didn't have it when I was in HS.

Coaches get too bent out of shape about it.
Regardless of its value, it's part of the HS experience. So long as the players are focused on Football when it's Football time, I don't worry about it.

Every year I talk to our team about how everyone in the school has a job they are responsible for during homecoming week to make it a fun and successful week. Class sponsors, stuco, teachers, cheerleaders, AND football players.
Our job is to PREPARE WELL for, and WIN the homecoming game!! The homecoming week "theme" every year has been to get OUR job done and it has made it a tolerable week over the years. I think having that theme has helped the kids to focus in.

Our school literally did nothing for homecoming. Nothing. No pep rally, nothing decorated, dance was cancelled because they charged $10(!!!!) per kid to attend. Best homecoming week ever. The lack of school spirit here is alarming, but there were 0 distractions.

Oh, as much as I don't like Homecoming, I think an atmosphere like that would bother me way more. I don't think our school has enough spirit but it seem that bad.

As with most coaches, I do not like homecoming at our school a whole lot, but... We love going into someone else home and beating them senseless at their Homecoming. We have been pretty good over the years and take offence when someone schedules us for their Homecoming, easy motivation. Nothing better than ruining a schools Homecoming weekend, we feel like an invading horde of Vikings or Visigoths pillaging a happy little hamlet.

When I played we weren't originally going to be allowed to participate with the backwards homecoming festivities (powder puff football, drag queen court basically). But we begged coach because half of the court were football players, and I won so I'm glad he let us.
The real honest punishment was having to practice with all that makeup on. It was terrible.

Exactly what you think you just read Gotta give an explanation of the makeup wearing thing because I have NEVER heard of that before. And I've heard about many homecoming activities. Guys dress like girls for a homecoming court. Get escorted on a golf cart, have their own bio read out loud for their girl character (teenage boys writing these things can be interesting). It's held the day of the powder puff football before the championship is played.

I hate homecoming because I have to be on campus 13 hours instead of 11 because of all the extra crap. Then I have to hear the APs that makes $80K go on about the "late night" when they split them as an admin crew but as the dean/coach I make $40K and I have to be at every event. Gameplan what?
PS I'm not wearing make up until I'm either in a Hollywood movie or dead.
