We love the Wilson GST. Once we changed our QBs begged us not to go back.

Congratulations and good luck. You're getting some great advice here, but the best is "stay true to yourself". I think that if you can do that, you will ultimately find success.

Our theme last season was, "11 for 1". We used this as a reminder that we must work together and all 11 players on the field at any given time must act as 1.
The year before I stole a line from Yoda in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; "Do or do not, there is no try". Only one kid had heard the quote before.

I'm a Subway guy personally. I have banned any "energy" drinks for the players so the coaching staff can drink nothing more potent than coffee. The local Dunkin Donuts loves us.

Two clinicians that I enjoyed at the Boston Clinic were: David Wilkerson from South Panola H.S. in Mississippi--as previously stated, very funny with some great stories, plus solid spread gun football stuff.
Mike Emendorfer, Wisconsin-Platteville--Just a wealth of knowledge and a great perspective on the spread for the last decode or so.

I'm in the same boat. 2nd year at a once powerful school that has fallen on hard times. Last year the seniors did not buy in and really brought down the morale. To make matters worse, the parents of the seniors offered no support and actually attacked program from the shadows.
We endured a 1-7 season, graduated those guys and have instantly seen an improved attitude. Stay the course and make the tough decisions and your players will grow to respect you.
I don't know how much better our record will be, but I'm optimistic that this season will be more successful and satisfying to the team as a whole because we will be a "TEAM".

I've been on here since '05. This site has been an invaluable tool and sounding board. I remember the early days and heated discussions around jet sweep under center v. out of the gun. Tog, yspace, huey, brophy and jwannha (sp) have been instrumental to me in forming my coaching "theories". It's nice to see coach Pratley on here as of late as well.
I don't post a whole bunch, but I visit daily for my fix.

We generally defer to the second half. We've had a very stout defense for the past few years and really feel like it sets a positive tone if we hold a team to a "three and out" on the opening series. Alternatively, if we go "three and out" on our first series after holding the opponent, it doesn't sting quite as much and we usually still hold the upper hand on field position.

I'm an OC and I'm in the box with a "volunteer" aka a young guy who is always around practice and is basically a coach except he isn't recognized. Anyway, he charts offense and defense (he's really good), and he even makes suggestions that make the OC look good from time to time. I of course grudgingly give him credit on those occasions.

I have only coached at a small school, and I played at the same small high school before playing in college at a small college. So I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like to know what it's like at a big high school as I hope to coach at one someday. But as for the small school debate, I think it's a great way to gain valuable knowledge and experience.

Two years ago I had the pleasure of coaching an above average group of athletes on the offensive side of the ball. We had a senior QB w/a gun for an arm and an engineer's brain. 4 receivers w/great feet and hands, a bruising FB w/sprinters speed and a large, experienced line. My QB knew he had a ton of weapons and spread the ball out efficiently (X&Z 40+ rec. ea. in 11 games, slots 20+ rec. ea., fb 6.5 ypc 11 tds).
We were (are) a spread gun team that runs alot of zone and option. We throw mostly short and intermediate routes, lots of Coverdale stuff, and of course, go deep when we can. My long-winded point is that I feel a spread system benefits multiple weapons a little more than a power type system.

Maine- New last year. After the end of the school year (mid June) teams are allowed to have 6 non-contact practices before the 2-week "hands off" period before the pre-season starts in mid August. So we basically have6 weeks to have 6 practices. The only other contact we have with our players is a 1 day 7 on 7 tourney put on by the Bates College coaching staff.

The Maine Principals Association has turned it's back on numerous pleas from long-time coaches who think the state needs a realignment. The MPA's stance is that it will not consider realignment until there are 80 high schools with varsity football programs. There are currently only 67.
The breakdown is as follows: Class A enrollment of 800 and up. Class B enrollment of 500 to 799. Class C enrollment of 499 and down.

I'm a high school OC in Jay, Maine. That's right, we know how to play with the pigskin this far North. We just usually end up playing in the snow by the end of the season.
I was a Pro I RB in college at the DIII level. Followed in the footsteps of Joe Dudek at Plymouth State in New Hampshire.
Our offense @ Jay is multiple formation Spread with a large % of our snaps in Gun. We incorporate the jet sweep package of plays along with inside/outside zone, trap, lots of different option looks and a heavy dose of Andy Coverdale style bunch and short passing schemes.
On defense we are a 3-5-3 team that went from 25th to 4th in the state statistically when we switched from our old 4-3 last year.
This current season is my 5th, all at Jay High School.

While I agree with most on here that gameplanning is obviously more important than playcalling, I still feel that there's a subtle art to "going off the chart" and picking a particular play for an exact moment. Sometimes it's brilliant and sometimes it blows up on you, but if you feel it, you should call it. In my humble opinion anyway.

The 30 Stack has been our defense of choice for the last five years. The two "inverts" allow us to stem in many different looks as well as get more athletes on the field. If you've got more than 3 good DLs then you can platoon or rotate and keep 'em fresh. The only weakness I've seen has been some vanilla coverages, but c.3, c.0, and c.1 are normally all we need.

I'm writing there to report a very troubling issue that is about to be voted upon by the Maine Principals Association regarding pre-season here in Maine. As is stands now, our pre-season starts around the 3rd week in August (the 14th this year I believe). We cannot have contact until the sixth practice which is generally the 2nd session of the third day (doubles). We then have our first scrimmage on the Saturday of the first week. That means we are able to get 10 practices in, 5 w/contact before the first time that we face another team. We then have one more week of pre-season followed by an exhibition game the following Friday or Saturday.
Now I already feel that this is an extremely short pre-season, but it has worked here for umpteen years.
The new proposal would restrict any type of contact in practices for the first week and move back the first possible scrimmage date to the second Monday of pre-season.
Now if a team schedules a practice for that Monday, say in the evening, it means it would have had only one practice with contact before it's first scrimmage. Does this sound safe to anyone? The alternative a team would have would be to delay the first scrimmage until later in the week which would essentially disrupt preparation for that exhibition game scheduled for the end of the second week.
I've heard from many sources that this is basically the norm around the country...with one glaring difference. Most states have a three week pre-season so, in essence, this extra week allows teams to ease into the season, improving conditioning of student-athletes before they are expected to begin the rigors of contact.
The MPA (Maine Principals Association) is not planning on adding another week of pre-season however.
Does this seem like a sound policy to anyone? I believe that I have gotten this proposal down correctly, however if there are any other coaches or ADs who can add or correct me, please do so.

The school I coach at has an enrollment of about 300 (class c in Maine) We don't paint our own field, but should based on the poor effort put forth by the janitors. We don't have a/c, but don't need it by mid september. Our coaches "office" is a small room off the locker room that doubles as our equipment room and the coaches locker room.
I'm not complaining though. None of that is why I coach, nor will it deter me from continuing. As long as the players keep showing up and working hard, I'll be there too.
