What type of game football do you guys think has the best grip? I use the GST but am looking for something else because the football (minus the white leather strip) doesn't seem very tacky.

Our kids like the composite ball the best.

We prefer Rawlings ST5. Similar to GST but a little "sleeker," QBs like laces better. More moderately priced too. Current QB actually likes them the more they get beat up (don't know-care why).
Only complaint I have about composite balls is they get like big ice cubes if cold and damp.
Don't think I've ever lost a game because of type of ball we used.

For those of us in KS, it doesn't matter. The state is regulating that all playoff teams use Wilson balls. I can't imagine anyone using a different ball for the regular season and then changing to Wilson for the playoffs.

Our team loves the leather Wilson GSTs....just got to break them in right. How do you break them in right? Every ball is different, we usually have several different kinds of balls for practice, but we usually use the leather GST for games (I can't stand those composite one's that you can get at any sporting goods store). Also sometimes with the kids (mainly your QB). I mean, I like the laces on the ball X, while our QB likes the laces on ball Y...and I like the feel of ball Z, while another coach likes ball Y, while the QB likes the feel of ball X. Everyone has their own preference, comes down to what you guys can afford and who is handling the ball the most. But back to breaking in the leather GSTs, they need some work out of the box/bag (just like MLB baseballs arent used straight out of the box, they get mud worked in and are put in some kind of humidifier and what not). Personally, I start of by taking a rag and trying to get rid of the orange residue that is on the ball out of packaging...stuff is slick to me. May have to wet rag to get rid of that stuff. One of our coaches, like to take a scrub brush and and brush the ball, trying to get some wear and tear on the leather. One year our QB, would take our game ball out of the box and would take it and would rub it into the ground 10 times, turn it a 1/4 turn and rub it 10x again until he did the whole ball, he personally like having a little bit of dirt on the ball. He was a big baseball guy and would spit on the ball and work it in...just try to get the leather worn. I think the biggest thing is to use the gameball the whole 1st week you get it. So if you get it Monday, need to work it M,T,W,TH before it goes into the game...dont have to kick or scuff it up, but you want to get the leather exposed. Once the ball is good to go, you can just bust it out on game days.

We use Wilson 1003. They are great balls and the QB's love the feel.

The rawlings st5 composite sometimes can be tough when it is very wet and cold, but wet and warm it has been good. Though...... we fumbled alot this year so... ?? We've used it for 2 years. I still keep some leather ones around also.

We use ST5 Composite with JV and Freshmen just to save money.
Have had some coaches at those levels who preferred it to leather.

In Illinois for the playoffs you have to use Baden ball because they paid the big bucks...that's what it's all about right!? The kids hate using them as they are very slick.

We love the Wilson GST. Once we changed our QBs begged us not to go back.

Our state has an official ball that must be used in the championship game. I don't know what it is but that's the one we use.

GST costs around $70
Our state mandates a Wilson ball in the playoffs so I think pretty much everyone uses a Wilson ball in the regular season too.
In 2008-2009 we used a GST. Kids then decided that they liked the TDS better so we used those. This year now they decided they really liked the Wilson TDS Composite ball. I like those the best too because they are $27 a peice. For the price of one GST I can get two of those suckers.

Holy cow! $70 for 1 football? Crazy!
These are the Wilson balls that our state association is making us use for the playoffs. Does anyone have any further info (pricing, leather vs. composite, tackiness, etc.) on them?
Wilson F1003 GST Wilson NCAA F1001 Wilson NCAA F1005
Thanks in advance.
