Does he/did he show up all summer? Is he a good kid in the classroom? As a senior if the answer is yes, we find a spot somewhere for that kid. That spot may be on KR or Punt team, but we get the kid on the field. I fully believe the best 11 play 95% of the time, but "program kids" (kids who buy in, do everything thats asked) find their way on the field some how.

Our athletic policy says 1/2 season suspension (which can carry over to another sport) plus must complete a rehab program for the first offense. Full season in all sports for the second. That goes for criminal charges, DUI, Drugs.

I assume everyone has started practice, or is close. So, hows it going? We have 26 kids (and because of the multipler, we play in Class 3), we are soft, and cant tackle a man in a phone booth. Other then that? We're great! Attitudes are good, so there's that.

I've never been in a program where we've had the kids in on Saturday. During camp, we always practice Saturdays, but when school starts, we don't do a thing on Saturday. That day is for family/college football, etc. I have my first child on the way, my HC has a one year old, and the other two assistant coaches are "men about town" so to speakacoaches meet at 4 on Sunday. We watch film, eat dinner and watch the end of the late afternoon games, finish up and then watch a quarter of the Sunday night game, or go home. It always works well for us. I feel one day a way helps everyones mentally. The ONLY exception is during playoff time, then its all hands on deck, since games are Wednesday/Monday/Saturday if you are blessed to make it that far.

I've heard from a lot of women that the football coach thing is hot. I cant decide if its from some fantasy they had as a high school girl, or if they love dudes with Under Armour clothing, with a gut and dips Skoal. If the latter is the case, Im like Channing Tatum to those girls.

I think its a society problem in general, lack of pride in things, wanting things now. We are blessed with technology that our grandparents only saw in sci-fi movies, but with that comes instant gratification. Football (life) is a grind, and many, not just in our sport, but in the workplace, in their personal life, whatever, just want it now, and don't want to do what it takes to get there.

True story, I was coaching girls basketball and dated a woman who was a coach on another team in our league. Trading scouting reports were easy, and understanding each others schedules were easy as well. Playing each other was the hardest thing in the world! Both of us are hate to lose types, and it didn't work out in the long run, but we split 1-1 in the time we were together, after the game each time I went home alone, so theres that :/

Coaches, We all have to overcome something every year; community, lack of coaches, lack of funds, etc. What is the biggest thing you have to overcome in your program? For example, I coach at a Military School, with 0 focus on sports. Sometimes practice gets cut to an hour, practice is supposed to start at 4, but I can count on one hand how often thats happened in three years, no more then two wins since Regan was in office. The kicker? Never knowing who's coming back year to year. We've planned our o/d for one thing, then first day of camp, the stud FB and wing backs we thought we were having aren't coming back to school. I will say, I have no parents to deal with, so thats nice. What do you face this year?

We always did a staff night. Let the staff and their families be more apart of it. While they've always got in for free, most never come. We try to honor them at some point. Like the idea about the woman one. Gonna have to try that.

Mondays around 9 if there is a jv home game, 10 if its away. Tuesday-Wednesday about 7. Thursday- 6pm. (Walk thru day, normally off the field about 5:30) Friday-Anywhere from 11-1 depending on travel. Saturday- Family day Sunday- I work from about 9-1, then coaches meeting from 5-7. Its what works for us. I do a little work during the day too, but I normally keep this schedule.

We try to attend the jr high football games after practice when they are home (game field is just up the hill from our practice field). Stay for at least a quarter, talk to the kids, help coach them up. The junior high staff is considered part of the football staff. They jr camp is ran at the same time as ours, they just leave an hour earlier. Its good for the kids to see the high school coaches and get to know them, and them us. Our middle school program is running a simple version of our scheme so we don't have to reteach every last thing.

All the time. When I was a junior high head coach, I was involved with everything, so I wasnt bored. When I became a JV d Coordinator, I couldn't care less about offense, problem was the guy I was working with was kind of a tool. When he moved up the other guy who came in didn't know much, so I had to be, because he knew 0 about blocking schemes, he was a "Madden" play caller. Now as a Varsity Offensive Coordinator, during defense time, I take my QBs and we work side drills. Not that I'm not intersted in defense, it's just we've got other coaches who take care of D while I work on getting our QBs better.

We reward those kids with a scout team player of the week. They get a certificate, are next in line behind the seniors in lines for stuff. Get 3 SPOW, you get a mini helmet. Also, we reward them with no conditioning if they get a stop on D, or score a TD on Scout o.

I work in the private sector and set my own schedule with meetings and stuff. I don't schedule anything after 11 am (football season or not) unless its a have to. I normally text the HC and see if he needs anything from Walmart or the local sporting goods store. I come home, pack, maybe sneak a nap or some film in (mostly nap. Get to school around 3:30, print call sheets, be avaliable for all the little stuff till the HC (also AD) gets down to the field house.

Im sure we all reach this point in the season where practice has become kinda same ol, same ol. We stretch, do indy, team 0, specials, indy d, team d. Wash repeat.
What are you guys doing this time of year to change things up a little? I know we cant (shouldn't) do full contact Oklahoma or anything like that, but looking for something especially during O to make it a little fun. Thought about doing a fat man football game or something to mix it up.
Thoughts?

I'm embaraased to say I've done in twice, once in basketball and once in football. In the football game, it was me being young, arrogent and bitter about the former job I left (I was engaged to a girl, it went south, we were both teachers, I felt they picked her over me), I hung 48 on their football team out of spite. I didnt feel the AD/Head Coach, even my fellow coaches supported me. When I was fired, they stopped talking to me. In basketball, was against a coach who ran the score up on EVERYONE. Well one year I had a very talented team. We were up 28 at half. Took the first 3 minutes in the second half to get the lead to 38. Then called the dogs off. The other coach was blowing a gasset on the sideline. Cursing me, threating me, telling me it'll happen to me. I just shrugged and reminded him he beat us by 27 the year before. My AD shook my hand after the game and said its about time he got his. "/ Now, anytime we are up 35 (mercy clock in MO) I just run belly. If we score running on a belly, I feel thats the best I can do. My kids deserve to play too, but if we are just running the ball between the tackles, its ok.

My head coach is one of my best friends. I'm the OC. I make my point, listen to what he says, make my rebuttal, he talks, I drop it. We are 89.9 % on the same page. We have disagreements, but Im a loyal soldier and we both want the same thing..WINS. If he's wrong, he admits it. If I'm wrong, I do the same. The overall best for OUR program is in both our hearts. I make sugjestions, he makes decisions. I don't always agree, but once its made, Im on board.

With all due respect to the old guard, are we not more educated now then say 15 years ago? The need for 3 hour two a days, with one water break in 101 degree weather does more damage then good? Summers are not about sitting around the pool, chasing the ladies around, but about 7 0n 7 and work outs. I think the game has evolved from where it was 15 years ago, and thus coaches have evolved as well.

Private school, they have to have one on file to attend class, so we are lucky I guess. When I worked at public schools, if they didnt have one by the end of the week, they missed the first game.

As a freshman, I started JV, played all varsity special teams. When I was a sophomore, I started defense on JV, then ran in plays on Varsity offense. Started junior/senior year, didn't play any JV. I missed playing games on Mondays. It was fun to play in JV games and I never worried about "recovery time", this was 16 years ago. JV players had to practice Tuesday, but got out of running after practice as our reward for winning. If a kid started Varsity anywhere, we don't let him play JV now at the place I coach. If a kid ran in plays/special teams, we'd let him play jV.

Havent seen my team since May. Yup, May. We are a private school with students all over the country. They don't come back till Wednesday. Practice in our state starts tomorrow. A summer behind, plus two days behind. Spending Wednesday with a meeting, Thursday testing. Friday we get going. Lots of skill talent, but how long will it take to get rolling? New offense, new defense. This has kept me up at night since I dont know, Memorial Day.

When I played, I liked knowing what was coming next. Or that we were working on 31 buck that day (whatever). Coaching, Meh, I've never done it, but I've never denied a player when he asks. My only concern would be pacing themselves when looking at practice, but that could be the flip side of not seeing it either.

We've gone 5-9. Two 90 minute sessions, break in the middle. Always worked well for us. Offense in the first session , defense in the second.

-How long for the younger guys? With a youth camp, you may be best served running the 1st-3rd/4-6/7-8 apart if possible. Or at least 7-8 different from the others. The younger kids (1-6th) can learn handoffs, stance, routes. Here's the thing, in my opinion. Dont tell some chubby 3rd grader he cant go run routes and has to play OL. Have 3 stations, break them up in three groups and rotate them, 10 minutes each, then do a defensive station group, 10 minutes each. Couple that with stretching at the front end, and some sort of game on the back end. 90 minute camp. With your junior high kids, we've always had them go at the same time as high school camp. JR High camp runs 6-8 pm, High School camp 6-9. They ran the same drills as our high school team, and when we went to team time, they did as well. We spent the last hour of High School time "cranking up the volume".

Agree. I'd much rather go to a wing place, drink a beer, eat some chicken and talk ball for a couple hours once or twice a summer for a couple hours then go away for a weekend.
