The "Wife" thread on the Career board is turning to the question of the time that coaches are gone from home. That made me curious so I'll ask: What time do you get home from practice? How much time do you spend away from home?
Assuming a Friday game here's my schedule:
M-TH: Get home at about 7.
Friday: 11
Saturday: Unless we have a game to scout, no organized staff activities.
Sunday: Staff meeting 5-approximately 8.

M-W Im home around 8, depending on post practice film. T- During JV season, Im home around 9-10. If the JV season is over or we don't have a game, about 5:30/ F- 2-3 am. I do all the hudl stats and enter everything, plus it is a great way for me to unwind after a game. I can never sleep.
Saturday- I do not go to the school. I watch film at home and try to relax a little. Sunday-Meet from 1-6.

Friday: between 1-2 AM (which is technically Saturday haha) Saturday: gone from 8-12 Sunday: work from 12-12 with one break for dinner

M-Th: 7ish. 9-10 if there is a JV game. F: 11 Sat: We meet from 7-11 as a staff. Players come in at 11-1. Generally stay no later than 2ish finalizing practice plans and all that. I'm on the East Coast so it puts me home and allows me to take a nap before the good games start. Sun: Off.
I like my schedule. We work hard and make use of our time. Its a good staff and good spot.

Monday's are JV games for us. For home games I usually get home about 10, and away games its around 11.
Tuesday-Wednesday I'm home by 7:30 at the latest.
Thursday if it is a home game, I usually have to line and paint the field (sadly, we have grass) So I'm usually not home until 10. If the game is away, I'm home around 5:45-6
Friday if the game is away, it depends on location. Last year I had 2 games where I didn't get home until 3:30AM and 2AM. Home games around 11:00. I go home eat, and try to get the film prepared. If its not too late, I usually do the stats.
Saturaday is my day. Don't bother me on my day, please.
Sunday sometimes we have staff meetings, and sometimes we don't. The HC is pretty old, so he doesn't like getting out that much.

Sunday - Off, family day only (and NFL of course) Monday - Our whole staff guys to JV games, but I call the offense on Monday nights and make sure all the kids have rides, so 9 when we're home and it depends on away nights Tuesday and Wednesday - 6:15, we practice from 3:15 to 5:30 and meet afterward to plan for the next day, shot the ish Thursday - Pre-game practice and team diner hosted by a players family, so 7-7:30 Friday - 2-4 am, film breakdown and "socializing" Saturday - 9-10 am with the kids, 11am-3pm, film breakdown and game planning as staff
That's about it. This is my third staff and third different schedule and I think it is a good balance.

Monday - Wednesday - get home between 9-9:30. Post-practice meeting with staff followed by meeting with the HC. Clean-up and make sure everything is secure and gather and/or develop anything coach needs in regard to adjusting practice script, additional film breakdown, cut-ups and securing the facility. Wednesday - 8:30 - meeting with staff and HC. Finalize game plan and practice plan and finalize special teams schemes and/or adjustments from practice week. Thursday - 7:30-8 - after practice we have team meal and then show face at feeder school games. Make sure everything is ready for game night as far as technology and equipment go. Friday - I do not go home. I work until 4 am or so. I have to secure the field, breakdown game film and label, exchange tape, clean-up after game, and begin on next opponent. Our HC wants our previous night's game broken down and 1 game of upcoming opponent when he arrives at 6 am. Saturday - work from 6- 2 pm. Have technology and cut-ups ready for varsity film at 8, film breakdown for upcoming opponents which is 2 games. Begin breakdown and game plan for special teams. Head back to the office from 8-10 to meet with HC to continue game plan and breakdown of opponents. Sunday - 10-10. I create scouting reports for staff, breakdowns/reports per HC request, scout cards, practice plans, recruiting film sent out, etc.

I'd hope you got rings on all fingers with that schedule. I understand busting your tail and I love football and all that but I hate wasted time more than a lot of things in this world. Is all of that time being used efficiently and with a direct purpose? God bless you brother. But unless I really, really, really liked the school and football program I'd probably be preparing my resume.

It is the schedule I have run for the last 3 years for our HC.
It might sound foolish, but it is dead on and my girl said I was being generous with time. She gave the old "don't include what you do in the off-season".
Our HC is very resistant on giving out responsibilities and delegating. I take on more than I should, but I love it. I feel I have worked hard over the years and earned it and want him to know he has me if he needs anything. I have no kids and a great girl who gets frustrated, but was given the outline when she signed up. She knows where I want to go and who I am. She is 100% on board.
I want to be the best assistant coach I can be. I want to be the coach that I would like to have on staff someday. I want to get to the top and become a HC and I ask for a lot so I am prepared when the day comes. The HC might abuse me a little, but it is what is best for the kids, the program, and the staff.
I try to lead by example for our kids and guys on staff to show what it means to have a good work ethic, desire to better yourself and provide everything they need and then some. I don't have to do it, but I choose to. Everyone thinks I am crazy and tells me to cool down even guys I work with. I tell them "if you want me to take it easy, they help me out so I can get some free time." I don't get any takers. I have tried to delegate and get burned. I tell myself if you want it done, do it yourself. My father is a workaholic and never understood why he put in the hours he did and still does without compensation or appreciation at his employment where he has been for 40 years. I grew up asking why and why was he never around and like the Harry Chapin song Cats in the Cradle I grew up just like him. I know nothing else. Work is what I like. It keeps me busy and keeps my add and ocd in line.
Our HC is there a lot too. Our high school is large and has great tradition. He has his hat in alot of things and try to support and make his job easier if I can do anything to help him out. He has recently started a family and I want him to have the all the time he can with them and if that means I have to stay a little longer and do a little more then so be it. I rather help others first than worry about myself.

Monday through Wednesday: (leave home approx 5 am - return approx 7:45 pm, give or take... I live about 30-35 minutes from school) - I arrive at field house about 5:30 am to get in a 30 minute workout (usually about 5:45 - to 6:15, approx).
- Most coaches begin arriving around 6:15 am.
- Freshmen start strolling in about 6:30 am.
- At 6:45 the Freshmen will lift in the weight room - lower body, usually a squat & a clean station. nothing major.
- 7:15 to 8:25 - freshmen practice (this time includes the 1st period of the school day, which is freshmen athletics)
- We will teach a few classes then have varsity & JV athletic period - in which we lift.
- A couple of more classes after lunch, then varsity position meetings right after school while JV is doing specialty work
- Varsity/JV practice after that until about 6:15.
- Kids will shower, we'll do some laundry, etc.
- Leave the field house around 7 or shortly thereafter ... rarely past 7:30 pm.
Thursday (leave home @ 5 am - return @ 10:20 ish)- Arrive & workout, same time.
- Freshmen practice (walk through, basically) starts at 7:30 am.
- School same as above
- Varsity practice right after school - maybe 20 minutes.
- Freshmen game @ 5:30 followed by JV game @ 7-ish (depends on Fr game)
- Usually leaving (home game) around 10 pm or shortly thereafter
Friday (leave @ 7 - return depends on game location)- Arrive at 7:30
- freshmen lift when school starts
- school
- personnel workout right after school (home game) or during conference (travel)
- game
- I leave from the game with wife & upload-breakdown film from home.
- usually in bed around 2 am.
Saturday (leave @ 7:30, return around 4:15 pm)- Arrive field house 8 am
- players arrive at 9 for treatment w/trainer, lift, run at 9:30
- shower then film at 10:30
- send them home after about 30-40 minutes
- start scouting report, game plan, etc.
- lunch
- continue leave about 4 pm or so. usually a little earlier, sometimes a little later. rarely, if ever, there past 5 pm
usually Sunday (don't go in)- church
- lunch with family (parents included)
- film study on own at own pace from home
- maybe text or call another coach with an idea - or get a text/call from a coach with an idea
repeat the next week. All told, I would say we probably 'work' about 80 to 82 hours a week. Some weeks a little less; some weeks a little more. This "work" includes coaching, teaching, games, meetings, game prep, laundry, travel to and from games, etc. Pretty much, that 80 hours encompasses all the time spent away from home Monday through Saturday.

Monday 5-6 (8-9 if away JV game, 7:00 if home JV game)
Tuesday - Thursday 6:30 - 7:00
Friday: 10:00-12:00 (may watch little film after the game and everyones in bed)
Saturday: Nothing scheduled. I will send some texts, but will not watch film during the day. This is the day I will do any thing and every thing my wife wants to do. I will watch film once the wife and kids are all in bed.
Sunday: Nothing scheduled. Text message A LOT. I will watch film after the wife and kids are in bed.
*My wife will schedule stuff on Saturdays with a "big game" coming up so I can watch film Saturday morning. I try to limit the football widow feeling as much as possible.

Monday morning: leave at 5 am (staff meeting at 6:00, we don't work on Sundays in Utah due to the local religion), get home around 7:00 pm. Tuesday/Wednesday, leave around 5:30, get home around 7. Thursday, get home around 8. Friday, 10-1:00 am Saturday: Team film 8:00-11:00 Sunday: Watch film on my own, usually when wife and baby are asleep and prep for Monday morning coach meeting. Take notes, come up with any ideas I might have and jot them down, never text a devout Mormon on Sunday is what i've learned.

Anywhere from 6:30-7:30, unless there's a 9th/10th grade home game, then it's later. Or if I decide to stop at the Alamo Freeze.
I usually never get home before midnight on gamedays.

Something that our kids, parents and coaches all appreciate...WE NEVER HAVE OTAs on a Sunday. Coaches can watch hudl at home, we can communicate by email or phone. We don't feel the need to meet. I make scout cards at home or during prep periods on Monday. I promise the coaches wives up front that Ill need the coaches during the week but they can count on them Saturday nights and Sundays. Its a very workable schedule. We all work hard and get it done. I don't think we need to put in more time, its about teamwork and cutting out the fluff to do what is important.
