We are currently playing in a conference which plays varsity and sophomore games on Friday nights and freshman games on Monday nights. For as long as anyone can remember, the better freshman players would play with the sophomores on Friday and the freshmen on Monday. Our superintendent has mentioned several times over the past couple years that he believes we are putting kids at risk and leaving ourselves open for a lawsuit by playing kids on only 2 days rest. How are freshman and sophomore games handled in your program? Do you allow kids to play in both?

depends on your numbers, we play our jv games on Monday and varsity Friday, was in a conference that played their jv games Thursday and then varsity Friday, so if those kids could handle it I say 2 days rest is better than nothing schedule your frosh on ofriday with varsity then soph on monday

I dont know if it is our state, federation, or conference rule. But we have to count quarters when we have freshman swinging between Frosh and JV teams. Also sophomores swinging between JV and Varsity.
Im spacing on whether its 5 or 6 quarters at the moment. I believe it is 6.
But if you want to bump freshman up to JV then only allow them to play a half of one game. Or 3 quarters of both games.

First off, how many kids do you have in your program? Most mid to large size schools I've been at (1300+ student body) keep all the freshman together (none of them go up to JV). So yeah your Frosh team tends to be larger, and in a lot of ways better; but I think it has some value.
That being written I am at a very small school right now (260 student body) our program top to bottom will have maybe 40 kids and we have two teams (varsity and jv). Those kids who play jv (usually 20-25) will also suit up for varsity, most as just-in-case backups. A handful of these jv players will play on a couple special teams, and a few will see significant snaps (over 20) in the varsity game. All of our varsity games are on Friday, our jv games are usually Thursday with some Saturdays.
In the end we tell these kids its just the nature of things; ice, hydrate and fight through it, we are a small school and this is what we have to do. I went to a new HS when I was in school, so I remember being in a similar situation my Soph. year. As it is we have 3-4 kids this year who will be "swing-players" and see significant time on both levels; we try to monitor what they do in lower level games, and will substitute when we see necessary.

As a freshman, I started JV, played all varsity special teams. When I was a sophomore, I started defense on JV, then ran in plays on Varsity offense. Started junior/senior year, didn't play any JV. I missed playing games on Mondays. It was fun to play in JV games and I never worried about "recovery time", this was 16 years ago. JV players had to practice Tuesday, but got out of running after practice as our reward for winning. If a kid started Varsity anywhere, we don't let him play JV now at the place I coach. If a kid ran in plays/special teams, we'd let him play jV.

that days seem dangerous
and I could see where a lawyer could have a field day with that
football is different all over the country, nothing like that here all freshman games are thursdays and you can only play 1 game per week

For us, if a Freshman starts on the JV team, he usually plays on the other side of the ball during freshman games. We are in a smaller school (~630 kids), helps make sure all kids are getting playing time. Last year I had a kid who started at SS on my soph team and only played RB in the freshman games unless it was nut crunching time. Freshman also help fill out our special teams on the soph level. I have never had a kid or parent complain about too much game time. In fact, freshmen usually love getting to play two games.

In our state no player can participate in more than one game in five consecutive calendar days, and no more than nine games in a season (not including playoffs).
Unless facilities are an issue (shared), most schools play Sub-Varsity games on Thursdays, Varsity on Fridays.

Due to a hurricane one season we had to play the previous week's game on monday. We then turned around and played the Friday of the same week.

Due to a hurricane one season we had to play the previous week's game on monday. We then turned around and played the Friday of the same week. We had the same situation due to weather concerns. Ironically, we won both games. Then the following week we got absolutely destroyed. I really felt like their was some "hangover" since it was our 3rd game in 12 days. Tough situation.

We have an 8 quarter rule here in NC. Usually what most schools do is let the young kids play JV, and then let them be backups for Varsity in case a kid gets hurt.
The 8 quarter rule allows up to 12 freshmen/sophs to play 8 quarters of football along with being on JV. If they reach that 8 quarter limit, they are automatically moved up to Varsity. If a kid plays 4 quarters of JV AND Varsity in one week, that kid is only allowed to play JV OR Varsity next week, not in both. So we are allowed to let kids play back to back nights, but you have to fill out paperwork and they are checked before and after each JV and Varsity game by certified trainers.

Also have done two games in one week and it's a pain. Another school had the advantage of scouting us when we played on a Monday night, and we had to turn around and play them on Friday. We weren't very good anyways, but they were one step ahead all night long.

Our Conference is set up so that the Varsity plays Friday, then the JV and Freshmen play on the following Monday. If they player is used in the varsity, he (usually) will not be used in the JV or Freshman game unless he was just on Special Teams.
