We were planning on traveling from Illinois to Pensacola/Destin area for Spring Break...not sure what we are going to do. I"m concerned, but I also don't plan on living my life in fear. That cold you might get from the virus could be devastating... The thousands of people that have died from this flu might disagree with your cold analogy.

We do not have weight training during the day either. IMO the best way to improve weight training after school is make it the place kids want to be. Make it a positive and fun place to be.
Good idea.
Any suggestions how?

When I was a young coach, I told one of my linemen to run laps until I told him to stop and then forgot he was out there. This was during two-a-days and it was hotter than h*ll. We actually finished practice and were in the locker room before I remembered. When out to get him and he was still running. Got him in and cooled off and he was OK but it scared the crap out of me and taught me a permanent lesson regarding frivolous and/or dangerous punishments.

How much money do you make from the snack bar? Are there other options to make up the difference that don't involve dealing with the school booster club?

First, you can't assume your players know ANYTHING about football rules and situations. Years ago we lost a game because our kick returner thought a kick-off was like a punt and let the ball roll to the one where the other team recovered it. It ended up being the difference in the game. We were all mad at the kid, but realized we never covered it. We just assumed he knew. That SAME weekend, we saw it happen in an NFL game. As far as the other stuff, we've taken a safety with the punter, we've intentionally not scored to run out the clock, (And one time our RB who knew better wanted the TD and scored. The other team immediately went own and scored and we only won by breaking up the 2 pt play), we had our kicker whiff so bad on a chip shot FG that the ball rolled down to the 5 yd line and sat there while the other team stared at it like a punt. When they finally picked it up we were able to cover it because we had practiced it. This was in a Section Championship game. Bottom line, if you coach long enough, you will see these things and you'll better if you at least mentioned them.

On our Thursday walk thru, at the end of practice we have a 15-20 minute scripted set of situations that we go thru in rapid fire, to practice transitions, substitutions, and situations. This is a review of things we cover as a part of our regular practices during the week. The kids are standing on the sideline. One of the coaches is checking the depth chart as we do this. We want the kids coming in off of the sideline. We simulate a coin toss. If we win: K.O. Return Go to offense, run three plays on air, Punt, Go on defense, run three plays on air punt return, one play of offense go to PAT, etc. If we lose the toss, we start with K.O. return and go on defense. You get the idea. We will work in take -a-knee, take- a- safety, K.O. after a safety, 15 seconds left in game to get the FG team on, last play of the game, victory defense, etc. as we go thru the script. It varies weekly. We do the same.

My granddaughter is going through this for Volleyball. All they're offering is a chance for her parents to write them a giant check so she can keep playing volleyball. (Actually, it's like Club except that check is smaller I don't think that's most people's idea of a "scholarship."

Were nearing the end of the season now and im just wondering what garbage offenses have you seen this season? For us the worst imo was a team grab bag offense that ran DTDW Superpower and Counter, Power-I Blast and FB Dive, 'Gun 2x2 SE Post / SL Out. That was their offense It's "garbage" if they lose, "being multiple" if they win.

Hey "numbnut" - What have YOU contributed to the OP??? You are just trying to ruin another thread and somehow you never ever see that this is a very common action on your part. One day the fact might dawn upon that giant intellect of yours that what I post is NONE of your damned business!!! Has anyone else seen or heard someone called a numbnut recently?? Bravo sir, that made me chuckle I read last week in Athletic Journal that a coach just got fired for calling his players "numbnuts." Another great word ruined.

Do you not weigh "risk and reward?" If you do, then "what could possibly go wrong" is the risk side of the equation. Fortune favors the bold.-Julius Caesar No risk it no biscuit.- Bruce Arians You play to win the game- Herm Rdwards Offensively and game management situations i'm going to be a go get it type person. Its worked out. Julius Caesar-Murdered by his followers Bruce Arians-Fired by Arizona Herm Edwards-Fired from the Chiefs, out of coaching for a decade
Just saying.

How did that guy block the punt? I have watched it 5 times and each time it looks like there is no way he is going to block it but he sure does. Also, what year is this? Looks mid 90's??? Ok, just watched the slow motion. It was a bad kick. He kicked it right into that guy's gut. Also, saw the year, 1999. Watch the offensive styles in that game. Guys heads will explode now days trying to comprehend it LOL The defenses are a thread all it it self.
I love the giant shoulder pads on everybody.

We had to play our Section Title game on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving after a Friday night game because they didn't want to interfere with the Holiday weekend. Also, the game was 6 hours away. We got home at 6:00AM Thanksgiving morning.

Do you let seniors speak? Do you say something about every kid? How long do yours last? How many awards do you give? What types? Do you show a slideshow? 1) We've never had Seniors speak
2)We don't talk about the kids, we let the slideshow do it. We have one formal slide of the kid with name , grade, etc, and three candid shots taken during the year from camp, sideline, wt room, etc. They walk up during their slides and we hand them an envelope with their certificates, Letters, etc inside. We stopped talking about the kids because it gets so redundant "Jimmy's a great kid, , Johnny's a great kid", etc. We also had a Head Coach who was EXTREMELY long winded. One year it took almost an hour and a half just to introduce the players so we came up with the slide show introduction so he couldn't talk. Parents loved the slide show, lots of sniffles.
3) Between 1.5 to 2 hours. Usually slide show was 15-20 minutes, highlights 15-20 minutes, awards about the same, depending on how many, introductions, thank yous, cake and some milling around finished it up.
4) We used to give a boatload of awards but at my last few stops we narrowed it down to:
a) Recognize 2nd and 1st Team All-League, hand out certificates and trophies
b) Recognize Captains and Hand Out Medals. We had rotating Captains during the season, players vote for permanent ones at end of season, and we give them medals
c) Give Out Team Awards-Players vote for them except Coaches Award.
-Coaches Award -Best Defensive Player -Best Offensive Player -Most Inspirational

We stopped doing food a long time ago. We introduce the players with a slide show (with sappy music), give the awards, show the highlight film, thank the various entities, and have cake and punch at the end. Much quicker, and never had any complaints about not having dinner.

Homecoming.....whatever....... I've devoted most of my hatred to "picture day" that always seems to land during the week of our toughest opponent. Ah man you gotta get this thing done before the season starts, thats the way to do it. Uniforms are clean, players are healthy, no need to use up time waiting for picture day I always tried to do it after grades came out. Took less time.

The most unintentionally hilarious line from the article: "The head coach provided his car for a second student-athlete to use, but the car broke down shortly after the student-athlete took possession."That is about as D3 as it gets! I absolutely disagree. The most D3 thing is the fact that the Head Football coach of a national championship team is driving a 2006 Subaru in 2016.
Actually, the player player was driving the Subaru, not the coach. Still, the 10 year old Subaru as a recruiting tool is definitely D 3. If it was D1, it would be a new Mercedes with a trunk full of cash.

"Teams are afraid that by agreeing to play these small schools 10min that it may affect postseason eligibility or other sanctions. We're fine with 12, did our summer/pre season conditioning. We make sure guys get some plays off as needed for a few. 1 (or 2) ins extra per quarter with the 40sec play clock is 3 plays per quarter if you run it down, 12 per game. Not terrible."
This happened to our Girls Basketball team several years ago. They went to a tournament where they played shortened quarters so they could squeeze more games in and got slapped down by the Section and told that none of those games would count.

silkyice Does this work for you?
Reads like a way to discourage kids from playing-being part of the team-program.
I think it is going to be a culture thing, particularly geographic. I have never been associated with a program here down south that didn't come in on Saturdays. Also, never been a part of a program where Monday wasn't a "real" practice. I was shocked to read about coaches at other places not coming in on Saturdays and then basically doing what was our Saturday practice (film, weights, maybe a walkthrough of opponents formations ) on Monday. Just my opinion, but if coming in for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning is the deciding factor for a kid, I am not sure if that kid is going to be a step up contributor for a decent club. I think it is a culture thing. We've had this discussion before in our area (Northern California) And there didn't seem to be a correlation between Saturdays and success. Some of our most successful teams in the area never practiced on Saturday, some of the worst ones did, and vice versa. The general consensus seemed to be if you like it, do it, if you don't like it, don't do it. It's just a matter of personal preference more than anything.

Looked back on the past couple of years and noticed we barely run certain offensive plays and defensive calls. What would be the magic percentage or times per game you called something before you decided it wasn’t worth carrying anymore? For instance, we only called a variation of power under 2 times per game the past 3 seasons...that’s not efficient to practice. However, we called trap 5 times per game, I think that’s good enough to keep thoughts? I also think you have to determine WHY you weren't calling it. Was it a change in personnel from previous years, is it a play that you don't really have a belief in, was it generally unsuccessful? Most coordinators, either side of the ball, are guilty of having too much in the playbook. I've certainly been guilty of that. Generally speaking, "When in doubt, throw it out."

I hate the fact that teams lose in the play-offs and still advance. That's particularly prevalent around here in Basketball, but its coming. They keep adding rounds to the play-offs here. So much so that they hand out first round byes so they can fill the brackets. Some of our Bowl teams played 15 games. It might increase to 16 soon. It's out of control but will only get worse.

This one was our JV Head Coach trying to fire up his team by telling them how the other team didn't respect them. However, the way he phrased it was "These guys think you ain't sh*t, but you are!!" The rest of us cracked up.

We’re a small school and have been fortunate the past few years to have an absolute beast of a lineman. The only problem is, he’s SO much better than his teammates that he doesn’t get much out of practice. He destroyed anybody one-on-one and any team session he’d mess everything up if he went hard. In short, we struggled to both make practice worthwhile for him and also good for the whole team. We’ve got another kid coming up that will be the same way. Any suggestions? Will they both be there at the same time? Use them against each other.
