Anyone know anything about this summer program or have experience working with it? It's promoted that it gives kids A-G credit and that coaches can get paid up to 8k for it. Is it legit? If you have to ask it probably isn't.

Turf vs grass is a big deal. Mud is worse than wet. Wind is also big factor. I like most of the suggestions above. Keep in mind that only 1/2 inch cleats are legal unless that's changed. Molded cleats are the worst in mud but not as much a problem on turf. Wet ball snap practice is a must. We used two handed snap because we were usually UC. Rotate wet balls as much you are allowed. Don't know if Dri-Ball is legal or not. Check the rules in your area. Scoring 1st is HUGE. Good luck. I hated bad weather games. Even though I coached in California, we had our share, usually during Play-offs. I wanted to coach in a Dome.

" He's dumber than hammered {sh*t}." My coach who was older than dirt in the 1970's used to say this one. " Puppy puke" Supposed to mean weak, terrible player. One of our scouts used this to describe an opponents defensive player. He was anything but and kicked our ass all night. Keep in mind that most of the sayings in this thread will get you fired nowadays.

Injury time out for the visiting team, I'm out to check how things are. Everything is under control. We're up 5 TDs late in the 3rd. I'm walking off the field and a player asks our HC if he is one of the coaches. HC responds yes. Kid, "Coach y'all are doing a great job of kicking our arses" No sugar coating for this kid. He tells it like it is!

One of the other problems is if you are in an area that is growing is more schools are being built right at the same time that officials are quitting/retiring. Even if all the problems listed above weren't happening (and they are, I know) it would still be a problem just on the Math. I would also say that its tougher for people to get off work and get to football games in time due to the increased traffic in Metropolitan areas and even some rural areas(2 lane roads). Add these natural occurrences to the rest and its no surprise its such a problem.

Thanks guys. I hate them and all but like I said the AD ordered them for some reason and the HC wants to give them out since we have them and the kids know about them. AD is young and new also trying to climb the ladder. I finished up my admin papers recently and he was in some of my classes I remembered. Said something to him one day about our internship group and he replied "Yeah I won all the awards for those." So that's the mind set we are dealing with as far as he goes.... God help you.

My daughter played volleyball and soccer this year. The last 2 weeks of volleyball they also had soccer practice. She would often go to soccer for an hour to an hour and a half before going to volleyball for two. They're still playing soccer until potentially mid June depending on advancement and they're starting volleyball off season in a week. She isn't playing volleyball next year and none of us are real disappointed about it. I didn't know where else to post this, but I thought I'd post it here because it absolutely stupefied me. My daughter's friend is a D1 volleyball player who's already signed to Valpo. Her mom has been receiving Facebook messages telling/asking her for her daughter to not play this year since she's already signed to "give some of the other girls a chance to get noticed". I can't imagine telling your lone D1 athlete in the school (male or female) to not play so others can get "noticed". Parents don't want to win now except in how it reflects on their kid. Getting "noticed" is the only priority.

We have a team in our area up in the mountains called the Wildfires. They've had to cancel games because of actual wildfires. Yes, they're in California. I coached for The Thundering Herd.

Reschedule if possible until the first set of grades come out. They won't take as long. I agree with freezeoption, just practice after in game gear. You may have to modify your times a little bit but it can work. Be aware it will be a crappy practice because the kids get goofy on picture day. Just try to roll with it and move on.

You can win with kids like that, but you can lose with them too. You must be willing to lose in order to have discipline, and if you don't have it you will most assuredly lose. I've always tried to believe in this, but we've played teams with NO discipline (fights among themselves, shoving coaches, 200 yards of penalties a game, etc) and they've won the league because they had great talent. It was depressing.

Seriously, I would look for a big ticket item that you normally wouldn't budget for, or a big ticket item that you have but is wearing out and would be hard to replace.(Phones, sleds, etc) I would look for one-time type of purchases. For example, if you go out and buy three different kinds of uniforms, the kids will expect that every year when you don't have the money.

We had 29 coaches step down/ fired in our area this year. That's definitely more than usual, and some were at powerhouse programs.

Had parents ask me my last two years why we weren't doing more because "X, Y and Z school does blah, blah, blah". I already thought we were doing too much and judging by kids showing up, they thought so too. But, that keeping up with the Joneses can be a mother effer. I think that "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality, that we caught from the Baseball and Basketball coaches, is the biggest reason we're losing kids and coaches. Besides the ridiculous time demands, does it REALLY make you that much better? Our Baseball team was one of the first to really do a year round program that they controlled. I was the pitching coach for several years during the season but not the off season because I was coaching football. I remember we had a pitcher who was very average but Dad was the typical Baseball Dad and was convinced his kid was going to get drafted and that the year round stuff would make the difference. Unfortunately all it meant was his kid got lit up in high school ball, summer ball, fall ball and winter ball. This happened over and over, but once you start it, there's no turning back.

It's like the guys who play a two-deep man under for every play of a 7 on 7 game. We do not run two deep man. We will play some man free because it’s what we actually run during the season. But also because I know me and the other defensive coaches can strategically stand in a spot where we can take away the same routes the extra safety would. God, I used to hate that! It's hard to tell the QB to read the three fat guys in the middle of the field!

One of the other things that's a bigger factor now is most of the staff has their own kids doing travel baseball, travel soccer, travel volleyball and every other travel you could think of that are having all day tournaments 3-4 hours away that might start at eight in the morning. The time demands are rougher than ever. Coaches want to see their own kids play now more than ever, and multiple kids means multiple teams. Mom's not doing all of that alone. I've been retired for quite a while but before the pandemic I followed my granddaughter's Club team around. The travel every weekend was insane. It wasn't during football but the fall travel teams are worse. I would hate trying to do both on the weekend like that.

This may be a silly question, but for those of you who say "some schools around us do, some schools don't", do you simply ask them about Saturday practices? Is this something that comes up in conversations at clinics? Reason I ask is I obviously know our program currently does not meet on Saturdays. I literally couldn't tell you if the 9 teams on our schedule do or don't. I said that but only because it's come up at local clinics, and we asked around before we started it that year. It was very informal, not a formal survey or anything. I'm sure you could get some hard data if you were serious about it.

Some teams around here do it, some don't. I think it's just what you're used to. We only tried it one year (keeping up with the Jones more than anything) I hated personally because I don't sleep right after games so I would be up watching film at 3:00AM and then getting up at 6:00AM to get ready for the new Sat schedule. We didn't do anything drastic, but we would have staff meeting at 7:30AM, kids for film at 9:00AM and then stretch and run them around 10:30. Fortunately, for me, we started 0-4 that year after several very successful seasons so our HC said screw this and we went back to "normal." We won five of the next six and made the play-offs. (We also moved some personnel around and got our best athletes the ball more but that's another story) I don't think Saturday had anything to do with it but it helped when we were grasping at straws. Bottom line, do it if you want to, or don't. It's not a make or break deal.

I remember going to a clinic after my first year (1977) and one of the Washington schools (don't remember which one) was running triple option and using RPO's off of that.

More Divisions, more play-offs, more $$$. Also more chances to be called a "State Champion." Also keep in mind we are larger than most countries so bound to be some differences of opinion on how things should be done. I just blame it all on Basketball coaches.

I hate PC! It is nothing but a huge pile of horse dung and if that school district is full of it...why would anyone with a brain want to work there? He should get another gig, and get the former school on the schedule. Actions speak louder than words. What does PC have to do with this? It sounds like this boils down to hazing incidents. Schools are trying to get rid of it completely. Some folks don't think it's any big deal. The article quotes parents using the "boys will be boys" defense. The problem is, like most things these days, is there's not a consensus on what constitutes hazing vs horseplay. Since coming down on hazing is a change from the "good old days" it must be part of "political correctness" and taking away the "fun" of how things used to be.

But wouldn't a laser level be so much more fun? and I don't trust the human eye to within 5 degrees, which would just bug me. Hell yeah a laser level would be more fun! Why didn't you mention that in the first place? Would that be a Space Laser or a regular Laser?

Never got any kind of bonus in 33 years of teaching but never expected one. I don't think it's done around here in public school (Northern California) We also never got any kind of extra pay for the play-offs. We went to the playoffs a lot so I figure I coached a few years for free. Our stipends also didn't go up for almost twenty years in spite of inflation so I definitely didn't coach for the money. State Association takes all of the gate money now so the schools don't get anything either. When I first started coaching, the schools got a small percentage of the gate but those days are gone.

I find that teaching districts pay just enough for you to barely make it...We get paid very well here I am at 20 years and make 90+. That sounds like a lot until you see that a shack is basically 300,000. My wife and I are fine because we bought 20 years ago. You definitely need two incomes to get by. I use my stipend for XMas and maybe a vacation. Here's my deal with teaching. I keep my head down and do my job. I NEVER get bothered. All the admin stuff is BS..do it anyway..I can count on the # of complaints with one hand that i have had. I teach a subject I like and and I would learn about in my free time..Business and computers..Kids sign up for my classes so I recruit them too Many years ago, my Dept Head (and my former coach) told me that most Administrators definition of a good teacher is someone who never sends kids to the office. I don't know if I was subconsciously following his advice, but in over 30 years of teaching I can count on one hand (OK, maybe two hands) the number of times I sent a kid to the VP. My Dept Head may have been right, I never got a bad evaluation. Of course, maybe I was just THAT good!
