If you’re one of those guys who Hates homecoming week I believe you are in the wrong profession in high school coaching. High school sports are about fun and being competitive. If what you are doing on O and D require your kids to be so locked in that they can’t enjoy homecoming, you’re part of the problem in ruining high school football.

Don't injure that shoulder carrying the burden of the cross to save football from the sins of all us curmudgeons.
Did you put this on your team's snapface and instatwitter too?

I'm not coaching anymore, so my day was pretty awesome.
But when I was a HC, I never had meetings on Sunday, nor did i bring kids in on Saturdays.

I get what you are saying, and there is some truth to your opinion (I have worked with enough helicopter HS football coaches who demand 24+ hours in the summer to know). But in the same vein that doesn't mean that all the shenanigans that take place during HC week should not be questioned and simply accepted as being beneficial. There are plenty of ASB/student council teachers who go overboard bonkers and sometimes they need an old stick in the mud football coach to balance things out.

Being upset that Homecoming interfering with Saturday meetings, or that the players are somewhat focused on it is bad.

If a coach is screwing with other school sanctioned events, the coach has earned what is coming to him. We are out at noonish on sat, here for 4 hrs on sundays. Kids are here sat morning for about 90 min. We do not mess with sunday mornings, college football at all. Holidays if we need to but is over in time to do thanksgiving at noon for example.
We do not interfere with hc. We hold am practice to get work in though.

Our school brings in portable lights for hoecoming "Lights Week". All the sports play a night game. I encourage them to support other sports but to leave early enough to get enough sleep if it goes long or starts late. Lack of sleep is one of our players main problems. Balance as was mentioned. We never meet on Saturdays or Sundays-never have, though we do have about half of our games on saturdays. I had an AD a long time ago that said I needed to cut practices short all week so the kids could coach the powder puff teams. We lost that homecoming game 55-0. She couldn't understand why I was upset at her that week.

The issue isn't the concept of homecoming; it's the fact that it's taken over the week. It used to be fairly toned down but it's basically turned into a vacation week. There were five theme dress up days, a pep rally/bonfire, games, a parade and then a homecoming dance on Friday night. It was still a week of celebration but there was still an emphasis on maintaining student academic focus. Not so much anymore.

The other part is most of the staff waits till sunday to do anything. All week to do it and wait till sunday. But the bigger part of it is printing a scouting report, putting it together for 37 kids to be found on locker floors. Otherwise, it could be done in 90 minutes at most. Our sat film review takes 2 hrs. But its all the coaches and we talk about everything from previous night.

Around here rolling houses has become the "cool thing" to do during homecoming week. Rolling = toilet paper the house and yard. Problem is the kids do it after midnight into the wee hours. forget you need to be rested to play a game.

We're the same way; the staff is in control of their own destiny on the weekends. We'll meet for a maximum of two hours on Sunday night if they've done their film assignments. If not, we'll be there a whole lot longer. The previous staff's HC and another guy took care of all the scout cards (offense, defense, special teams) but I made it clear that we were breaking those duties up.

The hc to his credit is done and gone before the rest of us. He hold court, puts in his end what he can, orchestrates the meeting and direction of the team and staff. To me the waste is the scouting report to the kids. We are not going to play back ups because of it.a kid can be a total a-hole and find himself being ignored at practice..but his scouting report... No biggie.

Uggghhh, I cant stand inefficient staffs on the weekend. Thats why I say after we've shown the kids the previous week, and its time to breakdown next week's opponent, every coach goes into a different classroom and is given specific columns to breakdown. No 'coaches shooting the breeze for hours slowing down the work', no 'coaches waiting til the last minute'. You have a job to do, and don't have the right to make others wait due to your procrastination. Get the work done quickly. After that, we have all the info, we can print up tendencies and draw up play cards based on it and thats most of the work for the scouting packet. Then all are free to go, those who want to stay can discuss opponent strengths and weaknesses, possible game plan, etc while we finish of the packet. It takes only a few hours on a saturday and everyone is done for the weekend.

Also who the fuk are you to judge how a staff works to prepare? I know some really good staffs that meet on the weekend and some that don’t. I meet with the defensive guys for an hour on Sunday but if I thought we needed more time we would stay all day until the job was done. Worry about your own and let others worry about theirs

We don't bring in the players on weekends. Coaches do their homework then meet from 5-8 PM on Sunday.

Just get a kick out of watching staffs who spend all year 24 hours a day in the field house go 5-5 and get out coached by old man river running the wing t or single back offense. Those same guys make fun of the old man and there out dated cavemen offense to get beat by it. Funny how that works. Less is more. Get your players in shape and strong, and be simple on both sides and you’ll have success.

Our kids don’t come in on the weekends either. We do meet as a staff on Sunday’s though. I now know we are the problem with football.

Egh, I hated homecoming, senior night and fans storming the field as a player. Still hate it as a coach.
It is about the game and the team. Its about the locker room and the bonds you form in there and at practice. All the other stuff is just noise. That is why I got into coaching and continue to coach.

"White Wednesday" I got rolled a week ago, for no reason. I have zero affiliation with the HS that was participating in homecoming that week.
