"A coach I worked with at this HS and I had grown up with summed it up with, "Imagine how those dumb MF'ers would be if we showed up one day at the mill and started yelling at them to, 'PULL THAT YARN FASTER!, GET THAT LOOM RUNNING!, WHY CAN'T YOU TIE OFF THAT STRING BETTER!?!?'..... they would start a riot or straight up cut somebody" Man, there's not one of us on here who hasn't wanted to do that at least once.

To hell with other sports!! There are other sports besides high school football? Do they have coaches and fans also? There is no way they can develop the whole child like football can. Arrogant much?

We probably all have one of those kicker stories. Mine was when we were playing a team whose kick returner had run the fastest 100 meter time in the nation the previous spring. Guess our kid wanted to see if those track times were legit. They were. My kicker story is a little different. We scheduled a game in Hawaii one year (from California) and in the meeting where we told the kids he asked us "Can we drive our cars or are we taking the bus." He was dead serious.

This isn't an obscure rule, but something that we coach. We had an interesting situation about 8 years back. Under 2 minutes in the game, we were down 1, opposing team has possession. They are driving and pick up a first down on FB trap. They come right back to it and score. They go up 7, but miss the PAT. We take possession, drive the field, and win the game. We could not stop FB trap. Had the FB not scored, we would have lost the game because they would have kept the chains moving. As a result, we now coach our kids, if we are up 1 with two minutes remaining and we break free we get the first down and then take a knee. Ask Todd Gurley about this one! We actually had similar situation, we go over this situation every week but our RB was selfish and wanted the TD. Sure enough, the other team drives the field, scores, goes for two, receiver wide open, our LB makes an incredible play to bat the ball at the last second we hang on to win. But hey, our RB padded his stats so it was all good. SMH

Our best player's dad was an assistant coach with us. We benched his kid for a half because he made some disparaging comments toward the OL in front of the team. I was young and i mistakenly didn't think to inform him that he (the kid) was benched, instead i just put the other RB in. Well the kids dad is just blowing up on the sideline about why his kid isn't in, and saying if he was we would've already scored and blah blah blah. Eventually he starts disrespecting me (the OC) and our HC. Keep in mind im in the booth so im hearing it through the headset and as the HC is telling me, but i can see him blowing up. Eventually it gets to the point where the HC told him to leave the field, he said no, and stayed for the end of the first half. At half time he starts yelling at me in front of the team and eventually he gets "fired" on the spot. He then went into the stands and kept chirping until the game was over. Than we had a nice fun meeting on Monday where he threatened to move his kids (ours the Frosh RB, and his other son who was a starting varsity DB/WR). Var HC talked him down and he just made weird remarks in passing for the rest of the season when he came to pick up his kids. That sounds an awful lot like my last season coaching. Maybe they moved to my school the next year.

That's exciting to hear coach! not a youth coach but we ran an annual youth football clinic All of Gen Z/Gen Alpha LIVE off of Fortnite and TIKTOK Some ideas: - LIVE DJ, music between plays... have someone actively playing music between plays and if you can afford a microphone have an anouncer... -Custom entrance and TD songs, free and easy to do.. I use one through google chrome. (or just use NHL goal horns... i made a custom one for my last team) - film every game, get an ipad and pay someone $20, and get it up on hudl or something - each team gets a social media account and puts up highlights and stats... make it a TRUE social media presence not just BS post once and forget it - a "main account" with player interviews and game recap which is linked to a youtube account where you post it all. - if I was running it I would shoot a weekly ESPN style show on YOUTUBE... doesn't have to be high budget all can be done very cheap... key is to cover every game and get parents and kids excited that their team and kid is getting recognition - finally this is VERY RADICAL but ALLOW/ENCOURAGE for TD celebrations, full on fortnite dances, leap frog, Ocho Cinco Signing the ball... I think its an archaic rule to prevent field fights when in reality field fights only really occur from cheap shots and never after a TD. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

I'm interested as to WHY OL is the hardest to staff in the opinion of many? I've read here that people feel its where you need your best coach, and that they are the position that get the blame; but no reason as to why this position would be more difficult to staff than any other. If we are asking all of our position coaches to do essentially the same tasks with their given position what specifically makes it harder to find someone who can do that task with the o-line? The O-Line and their coach does all of the grunt work. They never do any of the "fun" things, unless you think hitting the sled is fun. He is also responsible for 5 starting positions out of 11, usually alone, so there is a lot of responsibility, but none of the "glory." As mentioned above, if things go wrong it must be his fault because everyone knows how great the RB or QB is if he could "just get some blocking!" It takes a special personality to play O-Line and the same to coach it.

You need to keep your discipline policies in line with whatever the school district's policies are. Otherwise, it makes it easier for them to throw you under the bus when the parents complain. They'll throw you under the bus anyway, but it's harder when you are just following their directives.

Coach it cost a pretty penny to do, but if you are big like me (im 6’5 350ish 😫), see a foot specialist that can make some insoles. They will turn back the hands of time at least 5 years for your ankles, knees, and even your back. Anyways, these are the best shoes I have bought in many many years. www.newbalance.eu/en/pd/fresh-foam-hierro-v5/MTHIERV5-28517-M.htmlTo that dude who was complaining on the post—Im not going to call you a Karen, but that was very Karen-ish 😂😂😂 I believe technically he would be a "Ken."

Coaches, Have you ever removed a captain from their duties but they remained on the team? Interested to hear how you went about this, particularly anything you do proactively prior to getting into the heart of the season. I like the idea of having GAME CAPTAINS appointed each week That way: 1. You are not "stuck" with one that turns "sour"; 2. Involves more players in leadership roles; 3. Gives more INCENTIVE for players to shoot for that honor. Etc. We did game captains during the season and had players vote on captains at the end of the year to be recognized at the banquet with a plaque.

I would add to make sure the kids know how often the clock stops in high school. Most don't know it stops on 1st downs. Really allows for a lot more plays and you don't need to waste time outs.

I agree there was a chance to meet fellow coaches and shoot the breeze sometimes, and when we were in a league where everybody was nearby that was fun. When I went to a small school in the northern section of California, sometimes I would have to drive 2hours just to meet the other coach halfway and that sucked. Besides that, being able to upload with the touch of a button and not have to break down VHS or DVD"s (or in my case when I first started, Super 8mm film) made me a HUDL junkie the first time I used it.

You can run but you can't hide. Covid-19 hasn't changed. It is still highly contagious, no effective treatment, and even antibodies are going away after a few months meaning you can get it again. The other issue with the rural areas is very hospitals and available ICU units if you do get sick, even for other issues. We just had 73,000 new cases in one day and rising every day. This is going to here a lot longer than a lot of people think, IMHO.

A lot of discussion is about kids being safe from the virus, or only mild symptoms, but they all have older relatives. How would you like to be the kid who gives the virus to his grandparents and they die? That's going to happen somewhere. Do you tell the kid "I'm sorry you lost Grammy and Papa but hey, you won the league." I'm not being flippant. My granddaughter is going to be a Senior in Volleyball and I'm very high risk. Besides sports, she's a teenager. She's going to be exposed to a lot of people. We're really close and I'm almost afraid to see her for that reason. I can't bear the idea of her thinking she might have killed her Papa because she wanted to play volleyball, etc. There's a lot of uncharted territory in this issue and no good answers yet.

Being in a small town is not always all it's cracked up to be. I agree with the other posters, just chill out this year. God knows if you have to miss some time coaching, this is it. Just picture your former DC getting to be "in charge" of youth football and all of those expert Dads, while also taking temps, sanitizing everything and everyone, changing how to practice, etc. Could be good times.

I take no issue with the "modern spread" (in all of it's forms). I've coached in those systems, coached against them and they're just as effective as any other offense that's well coached. What I am seeing more and more of is younger coaches that want to run those systems but have no idea what it takes to coach them. That Dig concept is simple on paper but many younger coaches don't know what I'm talking about when I ask them to explain the QB's read progression to me. They don't get it when I ask them if they want the back check-releasing or running a hot route. Some of them might have done more research and understand what I'm talking about but underestimate the amount of time they're going to spend teaching that single concept to the kids. They have a long list of Air Raid concepts they want to run and get frustrated when I tell them to whittle it down. I like those passing concepts but I also understand that it takes time and reps to get it done right. And, I'm not going to be with them, coaching the skill players. I'll be with the OL and repping pass pro so the QB doesn't get killed. Agreed. My experience with that type of coach is they don't even know what pass protection is other then "Block somebody!"

Agree, it's a losing proposition but not new. Back in the day, fear of knee injuries was all the rage. We had a kid who we brought up as a sophomore for the play-offs and started all four play-off games. He was a pretty good baseball player, and he came to us in the winter and said he was going to focus on baseball because he was afraid of hurting his knee and ruining his baseball career. He was a great kid and we tried to talk him out of it, but in the middle of the meeting he said "Coach, I'm sorry but I've got to leave. We're going skiing this weekend." Apparently he and his parents had never looked at the stats on skiing and knee injuries. If they don't want to play, you can't make them.

I'm wondering if any state organization would allow games to resume without day school (ie no distance learning) returning? Texas, I'm looking at you. If the answer is no, then I think thats the answer there. Its all based on when your Governor (or in my case our counties chief medical advisor) allows schools back in session. Texas is almost re-opened anyways can't see them giving up HS football. Food, maybe, but not H.S. Football.
