one on ones DL vs OL, DB vs RB are a great way to go. End practice one day with a live goalline period. Give the winners a reward or the losers a punishment (3 plays to score from the 5). Another day end with a live two minute drill etc.....

Dont worry about the shoes as long as the are tied up. You will see the same pair of shoes on three different kids in our weight training classes. Alot of kids cant afford good shoes so we have some that just lay around that anyone can use. As some have mentioned the flatter soles may actually be better. You are especially fighting a losing battle if the HC doesnt have a problem with this. Not listening to you is a different story. If they cant follow your instructions they need to leave-NOW before it becomes a cancer. As some mentioned, print out a sheet our give them specific percentages to use and monitor this closely. We call every set in the wt. room. "group 1, 10 reps at 60%, read go!" and follow for each group

I dont know if I would rush to kick them off the team, especially the one that works hard on occassion. If you have a 3rd kid who is also a QB than I would make him the QB, especially if he has some leadership skills. I would find another position for these two athletes to play. Now my patience would be much shorter with the 2nd kid you described as he seems to be the bigger problem. I would consider putting him on "contract" as others have described. The first kid is like alot of kids, some days he works great in the wt. room, other days he goes through the motions. I would keep working with him and pushing him to make him better. Perhaps put him in a group in the wt. room with kids who are not gonna let him slack off, stay on him in an encouraging manner and let him know you see him lifting. Then if he refuses to do it, he has hung himself.

We dont have spring ball per se in NC. We can have skill development sessions with up to 22 kids and no body to body contact. So as an OL coach, I concentrate on drills and fundamentals on bags, and on putting in and repping our base plays. Usually I get 2 hour to hour and a half sessions twice a week for a couple months. As we move into the summer we move into repping more of our plays in a team setting.

We usually work 4 days a week From 830 to about 11 am. We mix up lifting, agilities, conditioning, and position specific drills. Some days we may just lift and run, some days we may just practice the whole time. Typical week looks something like this.
Monday 830-930 Varsity Lift, JV Agility/Speedwork 930-1030-Switch 1030-1100 Offensive Position Drills
Tuesday 830-930 Varsity Lift/JV Agility/Speedwork 930-1030-Switch 1030-Condition
Wed- 830-1030-Practice. (as much like a real practice as we can with no body to body contact) O Indy, O team, D indy, D team, etc... 1030-Condition Thur 830-930 Varsity Lift/JV agility/speedwork 930-1030 Switch 1030 Defensive Position Drills
Also usually have at least one 7 on 7 during the evening each week and go to a couple of 7 on 7 competitions or camps in the area.

Our HC teaches 2 classes a day, football wt. training, 3rd and 4th period. I teach History 3 periods a day, but my principal does cut me some slack and give me 4th period planning during the season. I cant help but believe that some of the reason he always honors my request for 4th planning is because I consistantly have some of the highest test scores in our county and he wants to keep me happy.

Coach JD, the first play you described is what EKU calls "reindeer games" They are running IZ and the QB is reading the BSDE. If he gets a pull read his eyes then go to the next defender outside who, while attacking the LOS, he reads as to whether to throw the slant or bubble. They have about 3 different patterns off of this concept each names after one of Santa's reindeer (Dancer, Prancer, Rudolph) We toyed with during this past offseason, but took more time and repetition than we had time for with only an hour of offense a day to become proficient.

I dont believe there is any need for me to stay "in playing shape" I will not play a single down this year. However, I do try to work out 3 times a week just so I keep some functionality to my body and am able to demonstrate the moves and positions that my kids need to be in both on the field and in the weight room.

If I were taking over a program that has been struggling, I would try to schedule "winable" games. By winning you create excitement, confidence, and increase interest in your program. As the program improved I would try to schedule more challenging games. If I were in charge of an "established" program, I would try to schedule at least a couple of very challenging games. These type of games help to simulate a playoff atmosphere and help make you better in the long run in my opinion.

I thought both defenses played a bend but dont break type game. There was alot of yards, but not many points. Although both defenses allowed the other teams to move the ball, they often stiffened inside the red zone.

North Carolina has a seperate playoff division for public/private. However, privates are allowed to play with publics if they pay an entrance fee to the public system and agree to abide by NCHSAA rules. Otherwise they have a seperate organization. Only one private that I know of chooses to play with the publics.

A&T just got a new HC, so not sure what they are doing. LR is flexbone, App State is spread. Wofford is not too far away, they are gun option, Western is west coast pro style offense.

I know the feeling you are talking about. Luckily we are sitting at 9-1 right now, with 1 regular season game left, and are in the playoffs, so we are guarunteed at least 2 more weeks, and feel pretty confident in more than that.
The worst depression ever was about 4 years ago when we blew a 16 point lead in the last ten minutes of the quarterfinal game only to retake the lead with 1:30 to go, and allow the opponent to run the kickoff back for a TD to lose.

Bring them in at the same time you normally get them all on Friday. For example, most of our kids are in Weight Training 4th period which starts at 130. So we would bring them in at 130 and do the exact same stuff we always do on game day at the exact same time.

Assistant supplements are pretty good at many places in SC too. In our area of NC, a HC at a successful program hung it up to go be the DC at one of the schools listed above, and reportedly will make more as a DC at that school than he was as HC here in NC. (and our county is not terrible as far as coaching pay goes.)

I didnt think the portrayal by Billy Bob Thorton in the Movie FNL was that bad. I thought it showed the pressure placed on players and coaches in a big time program to have success. (and lots of it). Even better was the way Tim McGraw played the redneck dad, then played the millionaire dad in Blind Side.

How about the way that Craig T Nelson treats Tom Cruise in the 80's movie set in Western Pa? Was it All the Right Moves? I cant remember the name of the movie, but the high school was Ampipe or something like that. Also, Varsity Blues gives coaches a bad name.
