We had a day like this last season and played very flat and very sluggish and I attributed it to the kids not being on their regular routine. What do you guys do, if anything, on inservice days? All the coaches will be at the school, but have things to do. I can get out of most of my morning stuff, but that's it. Was looking for ideas on what to do to keep them in their normal routine of getting up early. They are normally at the school around 7:30 A.M.

Whenever we have played a Saturday game we have brought the kids in for a real quick walkthrough just to get them out of bed. Its basically a repeat of what we do for a Thursday practice, checking off specials and defensive checks and then running some offense v. air.
You could also just bring them in for a team breakfast. We used to do that when I was in high school.

Why not have a team breakfast? Have the booster club sponsor it. That's what we do when we have a Saturday afternoon game.

Have this situation this Friday. Our head coach is able to get away from the wonderful inservice we have planned so he is taking the kids to breakfast and is trying to either find a theater to take them to or bowling. Something to keep them together, out of bed, and still be able to keep an eye on them. After the movie or bowling or whatever they do, they will come back to the school and have a normal gameday.

What we have done in the past is have them come in at 7:00 as usual and watch a little film till about 7:45. Then we gave them a quick workout in the weight room (about 30-45 min.) then they shower and can rest until around 10:00. We watched a football movie, ate, did any reminders and walk through. Handed out uniforms and it was right around 3:00 when we were done with everything so it worked out well.

We have been dealing with this for the last several years. In fact we are out of school this Thursday and Friday and we play our games on Fridays. We will bring the team in for our usual breakfast and devotional. Then we load them up on the bus and go the Shriners Hospital in town (charity that provides medical care to children with physical disabilities, they sponsor-or I guess you might say benefit from- our states all star game as well). Then we will feed them lunch and either take them to a movie or show them a movie in the auditorium. Then we have a walk through on the game field. Then a little down time before pre-game meal and our normal game day itinerary. It is an expensive day but I think it is worth it. In 2008 we played the team that my little cousins played for and their coaches told them to meet at the school at 5pm and to eat before they came. I wonder why every year kids from their community try to get in to our school to play football?

- Team report around 9:00 feed them a biscuit and juice - Quick walk through/chalk talk - Watch a movie - All cell phones must be left in locker - Send them home for lunch - Players return at the normal time school is let out
- have done the movie theater thing if a good movie is out - I like the bowling thing, get them up and moving, but nothing strenuous.

Bring them in at the same time you normally get them all on Friday. For example, most of our kids are in Weight Training 4th period which starts at 130. So we would bring them in at 130 and do the exact same stuff we always do on game day at the exact same time.

We bring the kids in at about 1:30 and watch a movie. After the movie is over, we follow our exact routine we use for any 7:30 start.

We have done in the past had a team breakfast at 9 am. This year we are having the kids come in at 10 am and watch a football movie then dismiss and report back at 3 for team meal.

Why do anything? Tell the kids when to get there and go about your business.

We like to take advantage of the opportunity to do a little community service/character building. We will also get some good PR for our program and school. And, at least at my school, it would be a concern that the kids might be drinking or smoking pot if we let them loose all day. Having them come in early on Friday ensures that they can't party too late on Thursday either. Even if the kids don't party, if they sleep or lay around all day they will play like crap. I have been at several schools where we had to play a night game after being out of school and it was always bad. Getting them up, moving around and mentally engaged is the way to go.

we bring them in early 7ish (because we can't get out of our wonderful inservice...) little form run etc to get the going, then thats pretty much it. Mostly to keep their bodies on the same (ish) routine and hopefully give them an excuse to their "friends" not to go the inevitable thursday night party "cause we don't got school friday."

The in-service day happened once in my career, and another time a game was forced until Saturday due to remnants of a hurricane creating havoc on Thursday and Friday, we knew on Wed the game would be moved to Sat.
Anyway.....on the in-service day (Friday) we kept ALMOST our exact same routine (it was a home game) with the only variation being we did not meet for the pre-game meal. All players were to be in the field-house by 1500 (3 pm) rather 1545 which is what we did when eating together - in this case players were advised on proper foods/beverages for their OWN pre-game meals. Everything went like clock-work and we won.
On the occasion when we were forced to move a Friday night game to Saturday, we as coaches were there early to prepare the field (which was always done on Thursday after practice). Players were instructed on how/what to consume pre-game meal-wise and they filtered-in beginning as early as 1300 to watch college football games on the TVs that we used to grade video and watch opponents to prepare scouting reports (we had 3 TVs). At 1530 we had the sound cut-off on the TVs, and light- out (per normal routine) and the kids watched, listened to their head-phone music, slept, or whatever they typically did per our rules for pre-game (silence, rest, focus, and get taped when a trainer taps you for coming to the training room for taping). We won this game as well. Other than the pre-game team meal we kept our normal schedule

I have a very understanding admin, so this might not work everywhere. I want to keep the kids on the same schedule they would have in school as far as 45 min in one setting then moving around for 5, to simulate the bell schedule . Last Friday this is what we did 805 Team breakfast 835 Walk through 920 Film 1000 - 1130 they leave for lunch 1130 Position meetings 1200 Work out 100 Snack gatorade and Movie (watched Rudy), every 45 minutes up and moving 300 they have hour off 400 left for game.

We had a teacher in service day on Friday of homecoming week. Not a good thing. I had the players check in by 9:00am to make sure they weren't sleeping all day. Then I had them come back in a little early and we watched the ESPN documentary Boys of Fall. After that we were on our regular schedule.

We are going to observe veterans day next Friday as a school, thus school is not in session.
If we make it past our first game of sectionals then we were already talking about bringing the entire team in and having a Call of Duty tournament. Bringing in a few video game consoles and putting them up on the projection unit. Just to have the team up, out of bed as well as, having something fun to do to keep them loose

We just bring the kids in at pregame meal time. We were off of school this past Friday. That's what we did. While I was not very happy with how we played defensively I don't think it had anything to do with the kids coming I at 2:15. More likely the 0-8 team we were playing and the game we have coming up this Friday was more the cause of it. But by rule we are not early birds. In the summer our lifting starts at 9:00 am. I've never really understood the crack of dawn mentality. No one plays football at 6:00 am. Or 9:00 am for that matter but at least you cam sleep in a little bit. I'm just sayin. Are we related? Do you have relatives in northeast PA?
