There is a misunderstanding. Under the previous HC we were a DW team. I was retained from the old staff and named OC because I wanted to run a spread attack that took advantage of our athletes and what at the time would have been our 3 year starter of a QB. Also Friday night we had 1 fumble on a 3rd and 2 dive in the first half, and our Soph QB threw a INT in the 4th quarter with the score already 56-9. We talked at practice yesterday, and we got it straightened out. Basically we are transitioning to his stuff. Pro style offense..I guess old pro style offense...I formation, split backs..etc..I'm good, just gonna roll with the flow.

Backstory: New staff, I am the remaining holdover from previous staff. Was told to install and run "my stuff" as OC. Since the spring there have been various tweaks and wrinkles to my stuff to suit the HC's liking. Coming in to the season our QB who would have been a 3 year starter gives up football leaving without an experienced QB in the program. We were DW under the previous staff by the way. Of our 11 offensive starters...9 will be having their 4th game of varsity experience this week. Blocking has been bad, passing has been bad...etc..this past week we played a team that appeared on film that if we executed and did things right we could compete...we lost 56-9...after the game HC says we got to meet to tweak the offense...the stuff he wants to see this week is very similar to the stuff he showed me in our very first meeting...the last 2 days of practice he has called all the plays during team sessions then asked me yesterday after practice "am I getting a feel for it yet" This just comes off to me as me being demoted or am I looking to much into it?

As a player being 9-0 ranked #1 in the state and losing in the first round of the playoffs by 14..
As a coach looking forward all off season to a team returning 27 seniors, 18 3 year starters, and being reassigned by the district at the end of June...only to see YOUR team get handed over to a guy whose career record is 1-19 and they go 5-5 losing in the first round...

I talked to an ex teammate of his who ironically was the star on the team during their time there. They are very close and he passed my info on to him and I am just waiting to hear back.

Coach, WHY should he give to your program? What distinguishes your football program from others? Too often, the community feels likes former players who have made it big can or should give back. You can not assume that this former player possesses a favorable attitude toward the high school. I am willing to bet that this former player has been asked by the little league, park, churches or various other community entities to "give back". You would just be the next person in line to hit him up for a donation. I am quite sure that he is probably tired of it (former NFL players have told me this). I would be creative in terms of finding ways to motivate him to WANT to be involved in the program (coach, motivational speaker, mentor). Once he becomes an integral component of your program, he can possibly influence other entities (other pro players, NFL) to take an interest in your program. Also, before reaching out to him for financial assistance, you should evaluate the effectiveness of your current fundraising efforts (carwash, golf tournaments, candy sales, etc...). I believe that people may be more receptive to requests for financial assistance if they can actually see you making an effort to assist yourself. Just my thoughts. MCRSA75 Why should he give to our program? Well he honestly is not required to do anything, i just figured he would possibly be open to giving a small donation. As a staff we talked this over and I said even if he sends a video message to the kids that would be something. As far as money goes, we were not going to ask him for thousands of dollars just a donation if he could or wanted too. Even if he says no I still feel like he should be apart of the program. But that goes two ways, he could easily just shoot a "Good luck on the season" email and in my opinion that would be "giving back". I appreciate the responses though keep them coming!

How do you get a donation out of an alumni who has NO affiliation with the current football staff. As a matter of fact it may be only 10 total teachers and administrators still in the building who were there when he attended our school. I am not one of them. This fella is in the NFL and he graduated from our school I believe in 2004. We have an administrator who is close to him but in our many conversations when I mention fund raising and getting to know alumni he never suggests this individual. I have somewhat of a connection to him, he is the same age as my youngest brother and he is "friends" with them...to the point of they speak to him when he is in town. So I have been apprehensive about trying to get them to get in touch with him. But even if I get to speak with him how do I ask him to contribute to the football program? We are struggling financially, we only had enough money to get a new set of home game jerseys. We need pants and about 10-15 helmets due to the large number of freshmen showing up to workouts so far this summer. So what do I do?

After becoming a student assistant my 5th year of college. I enjoyed that side of football almost more than I enjoyed playing it.

I have to say that I value everyone's outlook on the situation.
I am not even sure he spoke with our HC about it. Funny thing is that today the defensive coach comes up to me and tells how he is glad that I am on the staff and he feels like the kids are going to be better because of it. I just responded that I was happy to be there and left the conversation at that.
This dude is really all over the place and I dont want to be pulled into any mess or side agendas he has going on. It's crazy.

The HC was over on the defensive side running the Defense.
Last season...their first as a staff they were 2-8
Last week was the first day together as a unit and I noticed it immediately so I am sure he was doing it last year.
I think I will bring it up during staff meeting Sunday because the defensive guy cant be there during the summer conditioning days due to his job. So I want him there when I bring it up so the words don't get twisted or misunderstood.
The other reason I didn't say anything to the HC is because I did not want to come off as "ex OC trying to bad mouth current OC"

Head Coach is entering 2nd year. My first job was under a coach who believed in squashing all that in the office and getting rid of anybody that couldnt understand that. My gut is saying bring it up in the staff meeting next week but wanted to see if I should lay back and let the OC handle it since it is his offense. If I were the OC the conversation would have been ended immediately because he does not even coach offense so therefore he would have been asked to go to the defensive side where he belongs

I don't know. We are two separate personalities. When we talked about it after practice he said he was annoyed by the whole situation and that he is going to talk to the HC about keeping the guy away from him. But the whole issue is we are at an inner city school where the kids may have the perception that he doesn't have a backbone...and that could be disaster

I just joined a staff as QB Coach/Special Teams Coordinator and Thursday during an offensive session with the kids one of the coaches stops the offense in mid-play and proceeds to explain to our running back he is doing his assignment all wrong...Running back job is to check swing...OC tries to explain to other coach why we do it this way and other guy is hell bent on explaining why his way is right. The problem I saw was that the kids gravitate towards the other coach and he proceeds with the situation with RB and QB while backups are in. Being new to the program who is rebuilding how should I buffer that situation? I have already had a talk with him about trying to coach QBs, and he agreed to stay away from that area but I feel it is detrimental to the team if he is openly against the system...Being new should I step in or let the OC fight his own battle?

Last school I was at the AD wanted to be Al Davis. He seemed to feel that if he purchased the equipment/resources we needed then his opinion on football related matters needed to be taken into consideration. Example: I am in the teachers' lounge one day and he says "Hey it would be great to see Spencer run that Wildcat" I nodded and brushed it off. The following week he asks our head coach why I have not put in the Wildcat for Spencer like he asked....He was horrible

Recently signed with Ohio State
Rod Smith- last season he came into the opening game vs us needing 500 yards to break the conference record for career rushing yards. He ot 280 on 20 carries 4tds in a 26-21 victory for them. When watching the Buckeyes the next couple years look for a 6-3 230lb TB that runs a 4.4 40!
Oh yeah 3 years ago John Goodman-Now entering his jr. year at Notre Dame.

Snoop found a way to give back and futures were changed by it. Who is to say that young running back that is being looked at by USC and Miami would be even playing football?

As an assistant my responsibilities grow every year, and I am enjoying it. I am co-offensive coordinator, and coach a defensive position. I just do my part. I dont need more or less, cause I do alot as is and it really doesnt bother me. The next step for me is HC and dealing with admin, parents, booster club, and the other nonsense that our HC has to go through.

Its hard enough to get ino the league after putting up numbers in college, After Mel Kiper gets done with you you go from a lock to get picked to being lucky to get hired at McDonalds. Getting there with no college stats you better know somebody who know a GM that owe them a favor

Maybe it takes a Tony Dungy for Vick to get his mind right. Anybody who goes from being the richest man in football to soon working construction for 10 dollars an hour is definitely going to be a changed man. If I remember his charges were for funding the dog fighting not killing, and he didnt make this mistake because he was from the hood. Did Matt Jones cut up that cocaine in that car last season because of where he was from? No he made a stupid mistake which he regretted as soon as he was caught. Dont balme the environment because everyone in the hood does not fight dogs... At least my family and friends didnt.
