Just wondering if anyone else brings something in the form of a hit stick award onto the field. We have a baseball bat that's been painted an beaten up that's named "The Wood" an the previous week's winner runs it out of the tunnel. We call the award the "Bring the Wood" honor. Anyone else do something like this? Ive seen sledge hammers before as well.

Used an old axe handle one time, also had a baseball bat as well. Kids loved it, got to keep it in their locker for a week. You'd be surprised how they'd be on the edge of their seats waiting to see who one a stinkin' piece of wood?!

I've always wanted to bring out a 2x4 like Hacksaw Jim Dugen use to do in the WWF! I'm not sure how well that would go over with admin with all the PC stuff going on nowadays. So I just resort to eating Milk Bones and barking during pregame.

Better watch out, people will start accusing you of having a bounty system like the Saints.
Could be banned for life. ;D

We had a hit stick until a kid stole it. It was like a spear (we're the braves) without a spearhead. Kid got to carry it around school. We've had other staff talk about our kids walking around with it. And of course it was the first thing I thought of when all the bounty talk started

Sadly, you have to be careful with this in this day and age. In Virginia there was an incident after a state championship game. I don't know the specifics but I guess after the game there was an altercation between players and fans and some of the players from one team were carrying bats that were the "Hit Stick" type of thing that you're talking about. Nobody got brained and I'm sure it was blown out of proportion but it did become a thing. Here's a link to a thread about it on Virginia's state HS Rivals board. virginiapreps.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=2541&mid=150828709&sid=914&tid=150806472&style=1

We get those little bats that are more craft like about 18 in. long at like hobby lobby or something like that. We will stain them and then just write on the with a sharpie their name and the opponent and give it to them. The kids think its big time. We give out a new bat every week, so some kids may have a collection of them.

This whole bounty program has me wondering if I should be doing this or not though.

We had this discussion about our Hammer Award and we decided to keep it. It's completely in-house, though. We don't take it to games. IMO, if you start taking a stick or hammer or bat to your games you risk starting a needless controversy.

This whole bounty program has me wondering if I should be doing this or not though. I started a thread similar to this in the defensive section when the bounty story broke. I agree...it isn't really all that different. Rewarding players for hitting someone as hard as they can...or rewarding players for knocking someone out of the game by....hitting someone as hard as they can.

I am still going to do it because I am not giving it to someone because they tear an acl or give it to someone for a big hit on a particular player. I am giving for a big hit on anyone at any time. We teach sound tackling and I think that if we do that then we will be able to defend ourselves if someone ever makes an issue out of it.

We teach sound tackling and I think that if we do that then we will be able to defend ourselves if someone ever makes an issue out of it. It is the changing mindset of the game. We (myself included) STILL don't respect the head trauma nearly enough (as evidenced by everyone being up set by the ACL comment, but relatively unfazed by the concept of hitting someone hard to test previous head trauma. I suppose that is the nature of the game though. As long as there are plastic shells and facemasks there will be head trauma. As far as "defending ourselves if someone makes an issue out of it" I think if you do as another said in this thread, and only reward WRAP UP tackles as opposed to HARD HITS, you would probably be safe. For Example, would you give the hit stick to the Donte Whitner hit that knocked Pierre Thomas unconscious? 5 years ago, I would..no doubt. Now... Not so sure.

We give a hit stick but don't take it to the games. We also give a hard hat award that they can wear to school the following week.

We started this this past season. It was typically a defensive award. First two games the person who won the award ran out with it. We also had a chain with the number of links equal to the number of members on the varsity, including coaches, to remind them that the team was only as strong as the weakest link. Our former principal who is now at central office said it was "gang" related and wouldn't allow us to run out with them anymore. The kids had bought in so much that we kept them in a travel bag and it was on the sideline for every game. After the next to last game, the defense decided to award the bat to our fullback for a hit he put on a kid during a jailbreak screen. He was the only non defensive player to get to sign the bat.

When I get back to coaching I'd like to start the "Be The Hammer" thing... Love it!
I don't think it will be a cause of concern here in Europe.

We have a pirate-style tricorn hat that is given to our player of the week and was "donated" by a young lady who was initially seeking to reward our team captain by means other than those of a millinery variety.
Each week the previous "winner" decides on the new recipient of the tricorn based on a combination of performance and effort shown through the week. It's not simply for big hits.
Oddly, though, there has been a pattern of defensive players rewarding receivers who have put themselves in the line of fire and taken some pretty nasty hits. It's also been curious to see that the players are recognising effort and work ethic alongside the best performances on a given week.
Perhaps not so surprising are the number of students who would rather walk around town with a pirate hat on than leave their prematurely receeding hairlines on show.

I'm moving from O-line to Receivers this year and I'm adopting the "No Block, No Rock" slogan. So, I'll paint a cinder block school colors and give it to the player that blocks the best for practice pre-season and for the game in season.

We too have the hammer award.
Given the attention to the bounty system, etc., we're considering awarding the hammer to the best tackle instead of hardest hit.
