Good Lord... We live in a day and age where not using "gender-neutral" pronouns can get a teacher/coach in trouble in certain states and this idiot is pouring syrup on a kid??? Yep, got the videos on YouTube, parents protesting on both sides, admin not being straight with folks, mnew coach hired, fired after 1 game. It's been quite the ride for these guys.

Paso Robles (CA): JR Reynolds, who led the team as an interim head coach during the 2017 season, has had the interim tag dropped and will lead the team going forward.

So my daughter is graduating college next May. She just got back home last night after finals and we're sitting at the kitchen table talking about school and where she will be going after she graduates. We're talking about her senior pictures, they get to do a saying thing for the yearbook. She said that she had a quote and added 'RTFTO'. Since they had to explain all the acronyms she told them it meant:
Remember The Fun Times Often
Which fits in with what the school/society wants to hear. But, she said that it was actually from her HS volleyball days and that it was used to describe what they were going to do to their opponent - it actually meant they were going to:
Rip Their F***ing T****es Off
That's my girl, I knew I raised you right.

Painting- don’t forget that painting is an every year thing, you have to allocate funds each year for that.

I use Publisher as well, no reason trying to recreate something that someone else has spent a long time developing. What's a great feature is that you can use the template and then select the color scheme that overlays everything.

Yearbook here is apparently a class. Had a kid miss 2 Practices because he had to go take photos of the girls JV water polo games.
Had another miss partial practices because he had to go feed the rabbits for his ag class. The ag barn is just above our practice field so I’d watch him feeding bunnies and sheep in his football gear.

I just got a trade-in flyer from Schutt - F7 for $350, Z10 for $195. I've not bought helmets for 2 seasons and am looking at doing what they want - trade in older helmets for newer ones.

One of our dads bought his kid one for this season. He's a manager/boss at a large medical facility. Kid gets the helmet in just before school gets out. Brings it to weights, we check it out, seems pretty cool. We're ok with that, had it happen before where parents wanted their kids in XYZ helmet for whatever reason. We're actually looking forward to seeing it in action, I don't care if its made out of New Zealand Possum Scrotum and still has the tail attached, if it works as well as/better then go for it. The team can't afford them, yet, so we want to see how it works.
Kid doesn't go to summer school so he is ineligible to play. There goes our trial period.
He stays on the team, works his grades, comes to practice, works hard, gets academically eligible, and starts playing. Can get into a max of 3 games at the end of the season. Makes 1, then disappears. Just doesn't come back for whatever reason. School psych counselor says 'things hare happening, give him some room'. Ok, kid, we'll go along with this, just make sure the helmet is reconditioned (we're every helmet every year) and that I have the certification certificate in my hand. Still haven't seen the kid.
Before he left he said that his dad was working a team purchase with Vicis and that the price was dropping this next season. I'm pretty sure that his dad is wired in with Vicis because of his position in the medical world. I think the helmet is good and will be beneficial, but I just don't have a large enough trial period with it.

Here in Central CA by Sacramento the 'take a knee' is different. If we declare that we are taking a knee the defense has to abide as well so no rush, no contact. Occasionally it happens when a DL doesn't know the custom/rule but it doesn't happen very often. And it's an official thing, we declare, everyone stands there, take the snap, drop the knee.

It seems that the word 'culture' is becoming over used and out of fashion. Maybe so but I don't know what else to name the term that describes the environment that I operate within when coaching the football team. Student apathy, no parent involvement, staff apathy about sports ("What?! ANOTHER rally for the xxx team?"), players getting laughed at for playing, players going off to feed bunnies instead of coming to practice, what term do you use to describe that? Culture seems to fit.
So how do you change the culture? Hell, I don't know. I'm in my 3rd year and the players are now to the point that they won't quit in a game. That's a big deal because they used to just fold up their tents and head for home when the other team scored. No fight, no trying to come back, just roll over and play dead. Or lie there and think of England. So we've managed to change that aspect.
Grades are coming up, I lost a Jr. to grades because his history grade dropped because of a concussion and the admin/teacher didn't acknowledge it. Lost 4 Fr/So to grades but 3 of them have IEP's and are failing multiple classes in that. The 4th has an incomplete in PE because he didn't turn in his course syllabus. But, I got 3 kids back from probation so the net was a -1. Lost a total of 9 last year.
Players may be fewer but they seem to be the kids we would want to have on the team. Seems that the ones we aren't getting out are the ones that didn't do anything (fundraisers, summer workouts) and caused issues.
Is this changing overnight? Oh, heck no. Am I working on anything outside of the team? No, not really. I'm trying to build relationships with the staff and teachers and admins, but I can't get to the student body as a group yet, just no bandwidth to do that right now. The Leadership group is the spearhead for the school and they seem to consider football to be the stage on which they get to perform their leadership activities. The Leadership teacher last year said she wished things were better but the Leadership kids considered the football team to be dumb jocks and the players consider the Leadership kids to be effete nerds.
I've been making voice memos on my phone about practice and organization and how not to do things for the past 18 months. Up to 57 items. I'm working on a 'here's what is going to change for 2018' document that is at 23 pages right now. After 3 years as the HC here I finally feel that I can charge ahead (in spite of all that happened here this year) and implement my plan/program in its all it's glory and wonderment. I'll probably lose a couple coaches as well when they see what I expect them to do. It's not just changing the kids/school, got to change the attitudes of the coaches as well.
I don't know what to call it, but culture is real and will kick your a$$ without a second thought.

What do you guys do about kids who miss all or parts of school day but then come to practice? I get a daily email from the attendance clerk saying which players are ineligible for today. Means they missed 2+ periods of school that day or something. Means they can't practice, I got no say in that. I can't really discipline them because I don't know what the deal was, Dr. appt, slept in, whatever, it's the school that says they are ineligible.

"Our" trainer belongs to the local hospital system. They did a partnership with the school, and a couple other I believe, to provide the trainer at our games. She comes by before the games and tapes and then is at the home and away games. Doesn't cost the school anything and she supports basketball and baseball as well I think. At our home games we have a Dr. and the trainer lady. She comes by during practice 1-2 times per week to check on injuries and give concussion impact tests.

Quick little video of my LT that also played CB a bit. I told the players before the game that I thought that heroes would be made that night, that if they stood up and were counted that good things would happen. I guess my OT did just that.

We impact test the players before the summer workouts start. Kid can't play until he's had the test. So I spend a bit of time over the summer and early fall practices testing the new kids that show up.
When a player is thought to have a concussion, through a hit, actions, whatever, he's turned over to the training staff. They get it figured out what is wrong, not us, not mom & dad. They handle the referrals, school accommodation, all that stuff. The player basically goes away until they are returned to the return to play protocol. They have to 'pass' the re-impact test before they start the protocol.
I don't want me or my coaches doing anything medical other than wrapping tape around a cut or putting an ice bag on the player. Anything above that and he belongs to the trainer.

Game on Friday, kid gets a hit. Trainer takes over. May keep on sideline, may send with parents to emergency room if severe enough. Trainer sets up next baseline test depending on suspected severity. Once they get into any injury they are in charge of it, I make sure that none of the coaches have any input on injured players. We are not medical personnel and are not qualified to make any injury-related decisions. Wrap up blood, yeah, put ice on it, yeah, but anything else is going to the trainer. The files in the DropBox are the medical procedures for the team/coaches and the concussion protocols. www.dropbox.com/sh/4x49zmqv7vnepba/AACeDjgQZEMAZNx58ZT5l30ga?dl=0

All football players here have to do the Concussion Impact Baseline Test prior to any contact. If a player is suspected of a concussion they are turned over to the trainer. They administer the test retake and make the determination of a concussion or not. The trainers are the gatekeepers for this. If the kid is concussed then they inform the school that starts their protocols - no homework, no computer work, no pressure. Parents are informed of what they need to be doing with Johnny. Player is basically gone until the retest shows they are back to normal. Then that starts the 5-day increasing physical activity with the team. If that clears then they can play again.
Had a Freshmen get a concussion, got run over in practice and hit the back of his head on the ground. That's a Tuesday. Concussion confirmed, here's the protocols everyone, it's in process. Trainer comes to me last Tuesday and says that Johnny has a likely second concussion now. Seems while on the concussion protocol he was swimming somewhere and got hit in the head with a water polo ball. I'm wondering who gets credit for that concussion.

50 - Yeah, their 1st former coach was a great guy, great coach, did really well, built a very solid program. 1 moment of overzealousness and the program is in shambles. I kept watching, like a vulture, in hopes the guy would retire or something, never thought that he would, but what happened is pretty nutso. And now they got this going on. Dang good lesson on how fast something good can come crashing down.

Last year we had the Syrup incident at the high school that I played for - coachhuey.com/thread/75118/when-locker-room-stuff-goesThey fired the coach, he’s still at the school as a math teacher, and opened the HC position. I applied, but they hired a pro football player, went for the big deal coach with very little HS experience. And here is my recap of when I interviewed for the job - coachhuey.com/thread/75958/30-000-feet-interview-recapSo yesterday the new HC gets fired, 1 week into the season. www.keyt.com/sports/football-coach-and-paso-robles-high-school-part-ways/614809379www.sanluisobispo.com/sports/high-school/article170242437.htmlI get this in an email late last night from a relative who is in upper levels of the academics at another school in the area: This (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/sports/high-school/article169030192.html) was published the day before he was fired... I do not think that it was the final "firing factor" as there were rumors of swearing at players at the first game Friday, drug bust fo players and possibly coach by PR PD at Paso High yesterday, recruited players leading other players to spit on players that were "ratting out" the coach, etc. etc. And then there is the verified reports of coach not having drivers license do to past DUI, texting players for rides, tape recordings of coach calling students vulgar and inappropriate names, coach's financial woes, students transferring out, and misusing Booster funds. <Good Soldier> was named the interim coach.. <GS> is great and local but no credential or varsity experience. He did coach JV and is the current defensive coach. It is a very ugly and embarrassing situation. Very bad for students. I hope all is well in frogville. I see all that you do for those players and wish the Bearcats had the same.... that reminds me.. <Superintendent> suggested changing the school colors. Black was first suggestion,, then cardinal.. all new school staff shirts and paint is bright red (Cardinal??) instead of the traditional darker red that we all new as crimson... he now denies suggesting the change.Today I looked up the word "Schadenfreude" just to make sure that I had it right. And I did - the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another. Normally I don't go in for that, waste of time usually. But today, I have a new found appreciation for Schadenfreude. I'm not against the HC here, my Schadenfreude is directed at the administration that I dealt with during and after the interview process. They got what they wanted and it came back to bite them. Now all is right with the world. Except that I still need some OG’s and a backup QB. And a DE. Just 1 DE is all I need. Well, maybe the DE and a Mike. Yeah, that would do it.

START TANSMISSION...
So today I started getting calls and then some text messages from a number I don't recognize. A prospective player, hereafter known as Child_Unit, met my JV HC at the back to school night and got interested in playing football here. He's a freshmen, they don't know what they are doing, so we are more lenient with these newbies. He's also a transfer so there's some more leeway. I ask who it is on the text and it's the Mom_Unit. I text with the Mom_Unit about what needs to be done and she starts telling me about their most recent football experience.
I'm laughing and PO'd at the same time. I hate when I hear stories like this, I think it makes all coaches look bad. I can't vouch for this other than what Mom_Unit has said here so it may be total claptrap.
Mom_Unit: His last experience was not great. I think that made him not like football. Coaches were hard. I totally expect it. But some of the things they said to them shocked me. he was the only new player, the head coach put him in a position that wasn't right for him (wide receiver?) (to impress me, single Mom. Which didn't work) the coach thought if he gave him a good position it would get him a date with me!!!! No structure, no fun, no positivity. I think he will love football with the right coaches and team. He's FAST.
Coach_Unit: He came by and got the papers to get started. Don’t worry about the fundraising paper. We’ll get him going, he’s got a good JV head coach and I think you will like the experience here.
Mom_Unit: Ok great. Is it the last fundraiser?
Coach_Unit: No we still have discount cards to sell if you want. The sales are over but Child_Unit could still participate. We also have the Grape Stomp in Murphy's. that's the last one.
Mom_Unit: Ok. I will ask him if he wants too. I like fundraisers we usually do well. He should be home in the next few hours. I've never sent the boys shopping before. So this could be interesting. But thank you so much for all the help. He seemed excited. He's kinda shy at first. He loves to do track. Do these 2 sports over lap?
Coach_Unit: No, track is spring. Very good coach, he'll really like him. The cards have a LOT of value on them. When we meet up you'll see.
Mom_Unit: Ok cool... I will be there for his first practice tomorrow.
Coach_Unit: It will be good to meet you. Playing your son to get a date? That's a new one.
Mom_Unit: Oh yeah. I was very clear that I had no interest.... he asked me to borrow money. Hahaha I just laughed. He is exact words were u look like ur doing good in life, u drive a BMW. Do u think u can help me with some money til I get paid??? Ummmm no u have no job. Ok so to be HONEST. I know NOTHING about football. U will figure that out. But he had him as a line man?? Haha prob not spelled right. But Child_Unit was to nice to plow into the other players. He was bigger and stronger. But to nice to hit em. Sooo I asked if there was another position he could try. Well he thought that was a good opportunity to get a date by putting him in a good position. So he made him a wide receiver. Well he's fast and can run SHORT distance but couldn't catch the ball for the life of him. The whole situation was a mess. I bought EVERY SINGLE snack for every game and even brought treats for practice. Had the entire team over for a pool party/sleepover. The money that was supposed to got to me for snacks I said to donate to the team fund for the end party. Well there was no party and he kept all the money. Hundreds of dollars. So the experience was bad for both of us. I paid $30 a pair and bought the entire team a pair of pink Nike elite socks for Breast cancer month. He took the credit and said he paid for them because he loves his team. Hahaha I was shocked.
END TRANSMISSION...

He coaches at a school of 2050 or so, hard to tell day to day. He's got 190 - contacted me to see if we had some extra shoulder pads and knee pads he could purchase.
This isn't hard/fast rule, I mean I can't imagine the sheer logistics of 150+ players in a program. The intent here was to see if a program has close to 10% of the overall school enrollment could that me a measure of a good program. I think that there would be some real diminishing returns here - I coached against a team that the school was 4500 students. By that rule they would have 450 players which is just not real.
But I think that for most of us we would be pretty happy to get 10% of the students in the program.

One of the coaches I talk with says that he considers a program to be healthy when it gets about 10% of the school enrollment out for football. Today we're at 54/~650 so we're at 8% or so. Last year we were 68/700 or 9%. His school has 190/2050 so he's at 9%.
You guys buy into that idea, that a healthy program should have close to 10% of total enrollment? If that is 'good', can you then say that 'when we get to X% then we are hurting, and when we get to Y% we are in real trouble?
We have a state champ team from 5 years ago that has 18 on their roster this year. Apparently finished a game last week with 12 active.
