Looking to get some feed back on the way your team/school handles kids who may or may not have a concussion. Also the way they are handled if they are diagnosed with a concussion.
Would like to hear how many use trainers and how many don't. The ones that use trainers how involved they get in the process or do they send them straight to doctor.
The ones that don't have trainers how you handle kids who may or may not have concussion. How many use only one doctor for evaluation or multiple ones.
Also how you handle kids who use family doctors. We have had some family doctors keep them out for weeks and weeks and some who told us they were fine on initial visit when we didn't feel was the case.
Also how you handle parents. We get them telling us them telling us they should play and we agree but doctor wont allow, we get them telling us they should play and we disagree.
Our school teams all handle this very differently and it is starting to get complicated and frustrating. We don't want any kids playing that shouldn't be but do want them when they are ready.
I would like to draw from you guys what is your protocol for these situations. Looking to try and get a uniform policy.

Our trainers have been great about this. We use a 5 stage return to play protocol, that once a player is asymptomatic they go through 5 steps of increasing effort/activity to get cleared to play. They have worked hard to communicate with our local doctors and have gotten good response so we don't get kids just sitting out for a week or 2 when they could be back quicker, or need to be held out longer. We also use the Sway app for baseline testing and helping diagnose issues.

All football players here have to do the Concussion Impact Baseline Test prior to any contact. If a player is suspected of a concussion they are turned over to the trainer. They administer the test retake and make the determination of a concussion or not. The trainers are the gatekeepers for this. If the kid is concussed then they inform the school that starts their protocols - no homework, no computer work, no pressure. Parents are informed of what they need to be doing with Johnny. Player is basically gone until the retest shows they are back to normal. Then that starts the 5-day increasing physical activity with the team. If that clears then they can play again.
Had a Freshmen get a concussion, got run over in practice and hit the back of his head on the ground. That's a Tuesday. Concussion confirmed, here's the protocols everyone, it's in process. Trainer comes to me last Tuesday and says that Johnny has a likely second concussion now. Seems while on the concussion protocol he was swimming somewhere and got hit in the head with a water polo ball. I'm wondering who gets credit for that concussion.

How long do you guys wait to retest them after they fail their initial test? How long do you wait to administer the first test once you suspect they have concussion? Your way is what I am looking for. I thought the trainer could administer the first test. Most of the times he sends them straight to Dr. Sometimes he administers the test. Sometimes he lets them go to family dr and they never even take test. Family doctor says hold them out 5 days and they are good. Just looking for how everyone does to try and amend the way we do it. Thanks.

Game on Friday, kid gets a hit. Trainer takes over. May keep on sideline, may send with parents to emergency room if severe enough. Trainer sets up next baseline test depending on suspected severity. Once they get into any injury they are in charge of it, I make sure that none of the coaches have any input on injured players. We are not medical personnel and are not qualified to make any injury-related decisions. Wrap up blood, yeah, put ice on it, yeah, but anything else is going to the trainer. The files in the DropBox are the medical procedures for the team/coaches and the concussion protocols. www.dropbox.com/sh/4x49zmqv7vnepba/AACeDjgQZEMAZNx58ZT5l30ga?dl=0

Our trainers do the 5 step process. Sucks our starting center got hit today and said he could remember anything from today. Great kid, I hate to see it happen.
