The subject school just announced that they would not field a varsity team this season, only 5 seniors this year. 2nd time in 3 years they have not had a varsity team. No word on changing the practice schedule.

Just saw this in the local paper last night about the summer practices starting.
xxxxx will have summer practices every Monday through Friday from 5-8 p.m. The players will work on agility drills, lift weights and go over the installation of both the offense and defense.
Thoughts? I have mine because that's a school I very familiar with so I'm very biased. They had 28 players, Fr to Sr at the first practice.

With so many kicking stories...what do you guys do to practice making sure a kicker/punter isn't intentionally or accidentally kicking it to a stud? I can't tell you how many times I've told the kicker not to kick the ball anywhere near their guy and it ends up settling into his arms without him having to move a step. I used to see it a lot in soccer, kid would have a breakaway at the goal, nobody but him and the keeper, and the kick is made and it hits the goalie in the chest. The whole net is open and the goalie doesn't move an inch. I just don't know what it is about kickers. And we practiced squibbing, rugby, away corner, near corner, just didn't matter. "Look, kick the ball to the right corner, squib it in that direction." In practice, sheer perfection. In the game, returner moves 3 steps to his right and catches the ball on a dead run, scattering my guys like pins in a bowling alley.

We didn’t use the flip boards we used the Magna Doodle kids drawing toy. You got 3, 1-inch, black on white, 8-inch tall numbers that can be erased over and over. No issues with weather or visibility. Just buy stronger magnets at the hardware store. I thought of making the boards, buying fhem, using wrestling scorers, but the MD met the requirements for about $15 each.

I always wanted the EZ system on the hash to our side of the field, facing the scoreboard, a couple of yards beyond the end line. I wasn't ever a fan of the center of the goalposts like I see a lot of other teams do. I found that alignment allowed me to get scoreboard shots and gave good angles on the OL regardless where they were.

Also, regarding Excel. I am a PivotTable guy, that's how I navigate through the data I create. Other folks are Filterers, using the Filter function to find things. Just know that everything in the Excel file is geared to be manipulated using the PivotTables.

I just uploaded a 6MB file that I used to manage the team finances the past 4 years. It has a lot of stuff in it, please understand that it works with the way my brain works, meaning your mileage may vary. Let me know if you have any issues getting to the files.
At the schools I have been at, Northern California, the schools covered the busses, game day (field, lights, admin, referees, medical, security...), $5k for safety (helmet/shoulder pad reconditioning and whatever new helmets/shoulder pads I could slide in), and the coaches stipends. That was pretty much about it. Everything else was on the team. They got the gate. The football Boosters did the snack shack. Every cone, pad, Hudl/Glazier, medical supply, football, jersey, sock, knee brace, bag, mouthpiece was on the team. We did a lot of fundraising.
In the new file there is a table I used as my own 'catalog' of products that I wanted to use for my budget development each year. That has a huge number of items with the prices as of mid-2019. There is also a timing issue since some thing have to be ordered early (uniforms) and you have to work with the supplier(s) to align their billing with your cash flow (meaning billing in the fall even though they shipped in April). Not always an easy game to play. Our primary school vendor was BSN, we were asked to use them as much as possible. They were very good for us, I developed a good relationship with the sales guy and his area manager. Used a couple of other vendors as well but the largest majority was with BSN. Because of the catalog I put together I could usually give the vendors a PO that replicated the format/content of their order system so they had the proper names, product numbers, prices, etc. Helped make sure that they provide what I wanted.
The Boosters would typically provide $8k-12k each year depending on the budget, the team would raise $10k-14k depending on how they did selling the team discount cards.
I would inventory everything at the end of the season, figure what needed to be replaced. I would then determine what we were going to do new the next year which told me what new stuff I needed. I would then make sure that my ‘catalog’ had everything in it. I'd put all this into a budget. I then had to time the expenses and the expected funds from the Boosters and the team events.
The school required that I do purchase requests for the items I wanted. These were then approved by the student council, AD, admin…. I had to lump these by vendor and by timing. The funds had to be in the team account before the order could be placed. That’s where the negotiations with vendors came in - getting them to ship and bill later when the cash was there to submit the PO.
What else can I help with?

What are you looking for? One of the big things that I've found HC's don't appreciate is the $$ side of things. Having to scrape by scrambling for every $ has made me appreciate funding and donations and the Booster Club ever so much more. And it's the $$ aspect of being a HC that will get you in trouble. My 1st HC position came with a $9k 'debt' that the previous HC had run up and that the school had covered. That wasn't fun. I've got all kinds of $$ files that you can have, might be something in there that can help. Let me know if you are interested in them. No cost or trade or anything. From the link below go to the Operations/Finance folder. I've got a lot more that I haven't dropped in there yet. If I knew more about what you are looking for I probably have a file for it. www.dropbox.com/sh/2mpbl03bad23uww/AAC80R-ujX5CjABDJQOqAhNHa?dl=0Let me know what you think you might be looking for and I'll help out as best I can.

I used the app Seconds Pro for the field and weight room. Load it to an (old) iPhone, set the periods, connect it to a speaker, walk away slow. Works very well and you can play music and it will come in over the audio with a countdown and period number/text. Worked very well.

The AD's I worked under did not know what Hudl was and had no interest in having an account. We had to fund raise for Hudl so it wasn't on their radar. The only thing the school covered was reconditioning, busses, coaches sitpends, and game day - lights, officials. One did end up with Hudl after asking me about it but it was for girls basketball as he was their coach. Since there was no interest from anyone in the admin side I would have been suspicious had they wanted access, a 'change in behavioral pattern' if you will.

I hear through the local Pinecone Telegraph (apologies to Jimmy Buffet) that the athlete that was the male school athlete of the year last year as a Jr, and who has accepted a wrestling scholarship to a DI in Washington (he got 4th in CA in his weight last year, has 3.5+ GPA), is telling folks that if there aren't sports in CA this fall that he will transfer out of state. Same player that quit the FB team on me and whose parents got me bulldozed, is now leaving for greener pastures. He has a younger brother that placed 6th in CA wrestling as a Frosh, not sure what this would do with him. I haven't confirmed this, not really that interested in it, but it is telling that families are contemplating this.
It's a crazy time these days.

I've had a site of my files and such out on the web for some time. I've updated that and moved it to DropBox. www.dropbox.com/sh/2mpbl03bad23uww/AAC80R-ujX5CjABDJQOqAhNHa?dl=0You should be able to get to it and all the files I've collected/developed/stolen/borrowed/built on... since I've been coaching. I'll be putting more out there as I go through things. Please let me know if you have access issues there. I was looking at making these generic, removing the school and colors and such, but got lazy and decided not to do that. So these are using the names and colors from my previous coaching stop. I am trying to go through and remove contact info and player names and such from rosters and other files. If you run across any names please let me know and I'll update the file to remove them. Notes on the schemes - The playbooks are what I developed for the coaches, not necessarily for the players. Don't think that I would flood the players with the amount of information in the playbooks. I'm an offensive minded guy so there is a lot more focus on the offense than the defense. For lack of a DC I was developing a 4-2-5 playbook but a DC moved to town and we went with his 4-2-5/3-4, he had his own playbook that I was looking to assimilate after the season, but I didn't make it through the season. I was also moving the play diagrams for the offense to Hudl. I had pretty well done that before the season with the intent that the scheme documents would reference the Hudl playbooks so I didn't have to keep creating all the play diagrams in PowerPoint. You may see some missing images but I have them in PP and will post them as I can. Comments are welcome but this is pretty much me cleaning out my closet and putting them out on the street for you to take.

I saw a thread a few days ago along these same lines but it was 'Yeah, the kids are likely to be ok, but how about the coaches and referees that are in the over-60 bracket?' How many of your staffs have an older coach or two? How about the referees? I have no idea what you guys have but on the staff last year there were 3 of 8 that were over 60. And there's a lot of gray hair out there every Friday night. How may ref's (or ref crews) would your association have to lose before the lack of referees affect/stop the games? What do you do if you a kid or two tests positive, but no symptoms, but you end up losing a coach.
Part of me says to go ahead and play, get the herd exposed, try to be as normal as possible. Another part says that these darn invisible monkeys that keep biting random people and making them sick, some of whom don't know they've been bitten while others die, present too high of a risk. I don't think Americans do well against an invisible enemy, we need someone to get face-to-face with and settle the conflict. A virus ain't ever gonna stand there and fight like that so we are perplexed as to what to do.
I'm not coaching this year so I've got no dog in this fight. Discussion. Roundtable. Whatever you want to call it. But this is not a simple decision. What would you recommend/decide if you were the principal/superintendent/board president? It's your call, whatcha goin' to do?

Being a software guy I did a semi-custom site, paid for the hosting and did the pages. I went with MacHighway as the host, paid a monthly fee ($6) and an annual registration fee ($11). Had a domain name which included 20 email addresses that I gave to the coaches. You can go from a simple site to a full blown store or company site.
I used the site for info that wasn't going to change that often, about the school, contact info, team, calendar, schedule, fund raisers, things like that. Changed it every couple of months. One of the items that worked well was I used Google Calendar for the team calendar, all the events, practices, physicals, everything was on there. Google provides a way to get the http code that allows you to link to the calendar from other pages. I did that on the website so the calendar was always updated and accurate without having to maintain it on the site and in Google. Very effective.
I used Twitter for more immediate communications to the world at large, posting game graphics, quotes, updates, player/team/game images, etc.
I used 8to18 to bulk call the players and parents and coaches. That was my primary non-face-to-face communication method. It could also text them. That way I could generate a single message that went to everyone at the same time. And it showed me who got what when so I knew who got the message. That was pay as you go.
I never got into the Facebook world. I have an account but didn't want to be that much on social media. Twitter was enough.
I used groupme to setup group text accounts, one for the captains, one for the coaches.
You need to define what you want to do, and why, so you can figure out the best way to achieve what you want. That will be the easy part after you figure out what/why. What do you want from a website, why do you want to do that, and how much time/effort are you willing to put in for it? I found that constantly trying to update a website was a good intention but I'd rather be watching video at 10PM rather than working a website.
I'm happy to help out if you need anything.

So I said above that I was going to post some files I've stolen/appropriated/created/borrowed... I've setup a DropBox location for this. www.dropbox.com/sh/2mpbl03bad23uww/AAC80R-ujX5CjABDJQOqAhNHa?dl=0I've got some things out there now. Let me know if you can see the folder and the files and such. Any recommendations from folks who use/have used Dropbox for things like this feel free to give me the benefit of your experience. If this method works I'll be loading up more files, I've got a lot of them. I apologize to anyone that I have 'borrowed' from if I did not credit you with the information. I tried to do that but realized I wasn't always as successful/diligent as I should have been.

After 17 years my football coaching appears to be done. I resigned from the HC position last September (week 4) after a parent bulldozed me with the help of the principal. I didn't understand it at first but found out later he was the best man at the principals wedding. Best course of option at the time was to resign. Since then I've been planning to offer my services to the local youth organization. Thought it would be good, and fun, to go back to where I started (youth level, not organization) and coach the little guys.
But the new HC, he was my DC who once told me he did not support me as HC, has established stronger ties with the youth group and has told them point blank that I am not to coach with them. I've heard this a couple of times through the local pinecone telegraph but it was confirmed to me by the HC that I was going to coach with. They had a sign-up last Saturday and he checked with the league admin/official. He's baffled, I'm not, part of the joys of coaching in a small town. And I really don't want to be driving 30 miles down mountain roads to go coach at another (rival) organization.
So, at least for now, it appears that my active football coaching is done. Some of you may have visited my site that had a bunch of football files. I'm planning to update that with a lot more information/files that I've collected/borrowed/mangled/stolen/developed over the years, I'll post the link here when I am finished with the transfer.

As a sign to coaches checking on whether to apply to a school to coach or not, here's something that I missed and would have been a big, big tell about the school culture.
I'm cruising Twitter earlier this week and see a post from a local newsie about a small school football team in the area that won state this year. Picture of the seniors or something, maybe at the awards night or something, players all happy. I got to looking at it and realized that all of the players were wearing lettermen jackets. All embroidered, letters, all kinds of good stuff. Didn't really think anything of it until I thought about the school that I was most recently at. They don't even hand out the school letters anymore. If you earned a letter, and you want it, go see the AD, they'll give you the letter. And the captains stars, letter bars, whatever.
But, they don't hand them out. Know why? Nobody wears the jackets. Not the boys, not the girls. Nobody. So they decided like 8-9 years ago to stop handing them out automatically, instead it was a cost savings. In my 6+ years there, coaching football, I remember seeing 3 players that had jackets. But other than those 3 I never remember seeing anyone around the school or at basketball games or anything.
And the school does not have a good athletic reputation at all. In any team sport. Individuals, yeah, but nothing in the team side. So I don't know how it is at your school but here, nobody does the jackets. Stores don't even carry them, no market.
Looking back that should have been a big tell for me that athletics were not going to be a priority.

Pretty much missed the whole video game thing. My son went through all the games. But, I did play the Sports Illustrated football board game. Had to roll dice to get the result. Had to choose the play, other guy chose the defense. Had to take into account the situations and make the call. Then roll the dice to see who won the play. Change the situation, go again.

What is the funding mechanism for coaches at your school? Here at the schools I have been at in NorCal the funds have always been a stipend through the school. I've always thought/heard that other funding sources - Boosters, fundraising, donations, etc. - were not allowed by CIF/state association.
Now I'm hearing that some schools in the SF Bay area are no longer going to pay coaches and instead use fundraising/boosters/donations...
How are your coaches funded? Are 'external' funds permitted?

klaby - Yep, can't do it. Small rural school, 2 middle schools, next HS is 15 miles away. The kids are coming to the school, but still can't talk with them. The reason is that at a previous school there were 5 high schools in the city, same district, and 9 middle schools. Kids could go to any school as long as their was room. So going to a middle school then could be undue influence. Big cities, yeah, that makes sense. Rural, nope, stupid rule.
The only meeting we got was when the HS did the parent night when the parents and kids toured the school. They could come by the booths and sign up for FFA or cheer or football. But we couldn't recruit or anything, could not approach kids, they had to come to us. It's weird, but that's how they 'met' the rules.
I was the rules coordinator at a youth program when I started. The admin/operations side of the rule book was 2x as large as the football rule book. And I quickly found out that every single rule in there was because some coach did something to get an advantage so they had to add a rule about it. Same here. Somewhere in our CA past coaches were recruiting the middle schools so they put this rule in to prevent that.

blockandtackle - Are you coaching here? Everything you was pretty well spot on for what I've experienced the past 7 years. The only deviation was that what assistant coaches there were around here were the direct relations to Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi, and Knute Rockne and knew so much more than anyone else did. Hard to get the on-field going when the first response to any mistake was to yell louder.
The best fundraising for us was doing our own discount cards. Talk to the local store owners and get them to buy in, they're looking for customers. Sell the cards with local discounts at local stores and folks like that. The only Chains we had were Burger King and Subway, everything else was a local store that everyone knew. Folks appreciated the discounts, stores got more customers. Other than that it's hard to raise funds. When I was in the SF Bay Area we could work the local pro sports teams and concert halls, get in, work it, make a quick $1,500-2,000 for a nights work. We do 4th of July parking at a local venue here that does fireworks.

Middle School - CA - Can't have contact with them until they have graduated from 8th grade. Undue influence. The AD's can go and have generic sports talks and take names for interest lists, but they won't let coaches go and directly interact with the kids at all. And most of the schools won't distribute materials/flyers to the kids, too much work/trouble even if the materials are provided. I tried that and was told that at 1 school they just dump the materials in the trash can, don't even try to get it out.
That leaves standing in the cafe looking for candidates. But when you are an off-campus coach (who happens to sit in an office in the library), and you don't have anyone on staff that is on-campus, it limits what can be done. The guy that took over for me was on-campus and got 6-8 kids to come out, so it is valuable.

It just keeps getting worse for my former team. The interim HC was able to get 4-5 new players after I left, he knows everybody, knows every family. Got the kids to come out. Added 2 coaches who had told me, to my face, that they could not coach because of jobs and such. So he was sitting there with a +4 (at least) on varsity players (I hear a couple more on JV) on top of the 6 that were going to be cleared to play the week I left. I figure 26 kids. 25 kids on JV. Things are looking up. I'm feeling that it was actually a good thing that I left, things are rounding into good shape for them. They may not win much but they've got numbers and can play better than what I could manage.
The team has played 5 games since my departure. So far they have scored 40 and given up 196 in those 5 games. 3 straight shutouts. They have 2 games left and might not score a point offensively. The JV has done about the same, 3 shutouts in those 5 games, no victories.
Tonight my wife asks me if the JV have folded, she's seeing things on Facebook by the Boosters. I check around. Yep, the JV has folded. Had 14 kids for the last game and 1 got hurt. JV injuries include 4 concussions, broken hand, a hip (bone) injury, a hip (muscle) injury, suspended for inappropriate behavior to a teacher, suspended for disciplinary reasons, 4 players lost to grades, 4 broken collarbones. That's on top of the broken ankle (at wrestling practice) and a shoulder when I was there. Apparently 2 of the JV concussions were during M-W of last week. 1 was while going against the varsity. When they folded the JV 4 players came up to varsity. I would figure that would put them near 30. But no, seems that even with the 4 JV players coming up they will suit 20 players this week. One of the guys I'm talking with says that the coaches were "advised" of alternate tackling styles because of the rash of collar bone fractures. Something about head to the opponent's stomach....
I'm not saying my W/L record would have been different, or the injuries would have been less, but not in my widest nightmares did I see this coming.

As I'm not coaching now I'm doing end zone video for another team, I know the HC well and I'm helping out. At the game Friday night the sideline ref tossed 3 flags for being in the white box. The HC got ejected over this in mid-4th quarter.
The 1st flag, after the sideline warning early in the 1st, the ref was at the 10 and looked back to see the coaches in the box. Tossed the flag. Last one was in the 4th when there was another penalty being discussed by the white hat and another ref. Apparently the coaches didn't clear the box quickly enough after the penalty was explained.
HC and AD appealed to the officials organization and the HC will be reinstated tomorrow. The ref has been suspended for the remainder (3 weeks and playoffs) of the season.
