I mean, the logic is right there in front of you...how dare you be so insensitive I know. We're a$$holes I guess... It is always our fault. Had a JV kid get "hurt" last Monday in a JV game. Mom yelled at me because I asked why he wasn't at practice on Tuesday when he had a "really badly bruised hand".

JV game a few years ago. We were up 39-6 and were trying to get another score before halftime to assure a running clock. We turned it over and they scored...then got the second half kickoff and scored...then scored again and again and again and we ended up losing

Happened last night AGAINST us. In our JV game, the opposing team was throwing fade balls on us while they were up 35 in the fourth quarter. I assured my JV coaches that we will just tuck it away in the memory banks for the next time we play them.

If you pull your starters and play the bench it isn't your fault, unless you are throwing it deep every play, which I doubt you are. At some point it is their job to stop your offense and not the other way around. I would rather a team score points running their basic plays than taking a knee and punting. Blowouts happen, it's a part of the game.

Find a way to get everybody on the field without having to have struggles. That is the beauty of special teams. You can promote that as a starting position and let guys move in and out of spots there. Let them know that being a backup doesn't mean you are the lesser player but that you just weren't as prepared as the other guy. I am in agreement that lower level wins, while good, are not the most important thing. We would much rather our guys get quality reps and improve on their offensive and defensive skills and jobs.

You can not accept it. I took over a poor program this year and I reiterated to the kids that I would much rather go into a game with 15 kids who WANT to play over 30 kids on the sideline (Our numbers are low) and we haven't had any practice issues. Now you have to work on changing the culture, but like several coaches stated above, it starts and stops with the HC. olcoach53 is a great resource! Dude can coach some ball and will get the program going! Thanks Coach, much appreciated and much obliged!

Ask them if they want to start on the OL or be a backup someplace else

We lost our opening game on Friday night in heartbreaking fashion. We were up by 12 in the 4th and we ended up losing by 4. Film day today, we really dominated play but made several undisciplined mistakes late in game that cost us. My assistants want to bring hell and fury to film room. We are obviously not mentally tough even though we are very talented. I have been doing this a long time now and this may be the most difficult loss of my career, any thoughts on how to handle film today? This is just me. What is hell and fury going to accomplish? What is it going to accomplish on Monday? (We watch film on Saturday to be done with that week). Did the kids play to win? Did they compete? Were they happy they lost? If they competed and hustled and tried to win, hell and fury three days after the fact and the day you are trying to get ready for someone else, will be counter productive. Show them their mistakes and correct them. Make sure they understand how mental mistakes and being undisciplined lose ball games. Make sure they know that you have to focus all week in practice and game planning so that doesn't happen. Teach! Coach! Now if you get riled up while watching it and it is an honest emotional response, then that is different. Just don't like this hell and fury planned response. Unfortunately we live in a generation where hell and fury means bullying and disrespect. I remember the days when a coach could holler at a player and the player would learn from it and move on. We got our tails handed to us on Friday and we watched film Saturday. We didn't yell or scream at them, we just pointed out their mistakes and moved on. No point in embarrassing the kids anymore than they already were from the game.

When I was an assistant I would only speak to other positions about effort or something in direct correlation to the offensive line i.e., the line said watch his block on this play, or things like that. Never anything about technique or rules.

What frustrates me is when for example coaches chew out a player they do not coach. For example a DB coach yelling at a RB for cutting inside too early. If you don't know 100% what they are being taught, don't try to correct them. THE WORST! It seems like there is always that guy on every staff though. The sad part is usually HIS position group is the worst coached group on the team.

Last year we had the Syrup incident at the high school that I played for - coachhuey.com/thread/75118/when-locker-room-stuff-goesThey fired the coach, he’s still at the school as a math teacher, and opened the HC position. I applied, but they hired a pro football player, went for the big deal coach with very little HS experience. And here is my recap of when I interviewed for the job - coachhuey.com/thread/75958/30-000-feet-interview-recapSo yesterday the new HC gets fired, 1 week into the season. www.keyt.com/sports/football-coach-and-paso-robles-high-school-part-ways/614809379www.sanluisobispo.com/sports/high-school/article170242437.htmlI get this in an email late last night from a relative who is in upper levels of the academics at another school in the area: This (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/sports/high-school/article169030192.html) was published the day before he was fired... I do not think that it was the final "firing factor" as there were rumors of swearing at players at the first game Friday, drug bust fo players and possibly coach by PR PD at Paso High yesterday, recruited players leading other players to spit on players that were "ratting out" the coach, etc. etc. And then there is the verified reports of coach not having drivers license do to past DUI, texting players for rides, tape recordings of coach calling students vulgar and inappropriate names, coach's financial woes, students transferring out, and misusing Booster funds. <Good Soldier> was named the interim coach.. <GS> is great and local but no credential or varsity experience. He did coach JV and is the current defensive coach. It is a very ugly and embarrassing situation. Very bad for students. I hope all is well in frogville. I see all that you do for those players and wish the Bearcats had the same.... that reminds me.. <Superintendent> suggested changing the school colors. Black was first suggestion,, then cardinal.. all new school staff shirts and paint is bright red (Cardinal??) instead of the traditional darker red that we all new as crimson... he now denies suggesting the change.Today I looked up the word "Schadenfreude" just to make sure that I had it right. And I did - the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another. Normally I don't go in for that, waste of time usually. But today, I have a new found appreciation for Schadenfreude. I'm not against the HC here, my Schadenfreude is directed at the administration that I dealt with during and after the interview process. They got what they wanted and it came back to bite them. Now all is right with the world. Except that I still need some OG’s and a backup QB. And a DE. Just 1 DE is all I need. Well, maybe the DE and a Mike. Yeah, that would do it. I believe the common phrase here is "Dumpster Fire"

It is amazing how leaders of organizations, in this case administration, can't see THEY are the problem and therefore the solution. Easier to pass the buck-blame others. BLB you were WAY off with your prediction of him being gone within a year...shame on you

I can see pros and cons of the 10% number. I would say if you have less than 1000 kids you should be aiming for 10%. I say anything over 1000 kids you should have at least 100 in your entire program. Just my thoughts

More sports means more kids "specializing"
We have 42 kids right now 9-12 with many in the building who have no real reason to not play other than "I don't know" Some of them played last year during an 0-9 season and decided not to come out even with a change at head coach. We did pick up a few players who did NOT play last season and they fell in love. I wish more kids would give our sport a shot but on the flip side of that there are less kids playing in ALL sports these days. All numbers are down in all sports and that is the sad state of this generation.

I was a freshmen in college--played D3 football--and we were brutally bad. We went 0-10 that season and our closest loss was a 14 point loss in Week 8. Well, this was week 9 and we were on the road against a team we thought we legitimately had a chance to beat, especially after playing relatively well the week before. Not so much...we got blasted and were down 49-7 at the half. Our HC comes into the locker room and he begins real calm but then it escalated: "Look, guys, I'm not going to name names...but MIKE WATSON YOU QUIT ON THAT PLAY!!!!!!!" The rest of halftime was pretty much spent trying to keep Mike Watson from killing our HC... It's funny that I was reading this thinking in the back on my mind, that sounds like IC, then I see the name of the player and the name of the man who wrote it and I realized IT IS IC!

This is a funny story. Did not happen to me but kinda wish it did. Happened to a buddy of mine who coaches basketball. He was coaching a tight game and I don't even recall the outcome but it was close. No parents bothering him during the game, all was well, etc. So he gets home and he sees several voicemails on his answering machine & he clicks to retrieve the messages. Well...it's the dad of one of his players who is on his cell phone leaving a message DURING THE GAME. He said it went until the tape cut him off and then he called back several times. He was giving a play by play summary of what my buddy was doing wrong during the game. "Coach it's the 3rd quarter and you are not pressing enough. Also, I just watched you run the inbound play with 3:43 left in the quarter & you should;ve done _________". "Not sure I would have gone man to man on #3, he was to athletic for you guys". I just watched you call a time out, why didn't you take ity after their last basket?" My buddy was so pi$$ed. he was even more pi$$ed when he told me & I started laughing. he said it went on for ever. Our HC doesnt carry his cell phone during games or practice...spouts something about "professionalism" or some other nonsense...probably just because he cant make sweet memes of the scoreboard, or take selfies with the team after wins, like he expects us assistants to do....anyway, I digress..We get back into the office after a game, he pulls out his cell phone, and he has a massive string of text messages from a parent..."put David in the game...why is David not playing? my son needs to be in...you are ruining my night..." crap like that. There were probably 50 messages from this mom. And David? He was one of several JV kid we brought up to varsity after the JV season ended. He had the time of his life on the sideline that night, had no idea his mom had sent those. Also, we had 2 drunk families get into a fist fight during a game...we were up 28-0 in the 2nd quarter, going in to score, when the game had to be paused til the cops and admin got the fight stopped. No one knows what the fight was about. I know this was tongue in cheek but I have unfortunately seen it. Coaches taking selfies during time outs of the game, taking pictures DURING the game. Same coaches who get in trouble TWICE for eating on the sidelines. Makes me sick to my stomach sometimes that there are jamokes like this in our profession.

How about the coach with a headset on friday nights that doesn't come to film on sundays that starts suggesting play calls? Those guys get yelled at... We had a guy like that. Called him "Game Day" would only show up on Fridays, want to have input in everything and always asked for coaching gear ahead of everybody else. We tried to leave him at school one day but he showed up early. He ended up quitting in the middle of a game because we were trying to coach up his position group since he was never there and didn't know our game plan.

The coach who posts photos on Facebook or Twitter of his players in the weight room "doing work." Like they're the only ones who ever lift weights. The term "doing work/putting in work" is my pet peeve. I hate the term "Grinding" when referring to this usually the ones doing crossfit style workouts that may be hard, but not actually get kids stronger Grinding is not something i want to do to my body, bones, or joints Grinding is meant for Pretty Ricky-esque dancing in music videos Grinding is now just a fancy word for working hard. I would rather work hard than grind. Also people who "grind" always think they are outworking their opponent when in reality they are just taking 5 steps to do one thing and working harder not smarter.
