I admit to being torn on a lot of these issues. But this is where social media, mistrust of media in general, politics on both sides is really hurting us. Think of all the collective sacrifices we were able to make during WWII for the good of the cause: rationing foods, war bonds, victory gardens etc. There was a common goal and a clear message and people generally were convinced to do what was best for everyone. Obviously not the same situation, but we've already lost more Americans than we did in WWI and sadly are in a situation where we can eclipse the deaths of WWII as well. I don't have the answers, just venting I guess.

Okay,
I'm really showing my technological ignorance here but this is a safe space....regarding ppt and google slides.....how do you diagram everything? Do you use templates that already exist out there? Do you do them yourself? I am a new OC and have been using HUDL but don't love it.

Question for those who know more about this than me: If this is no big deal, and the deaths will taper off like they did in China, why is our country, and the rest of the world, bit by bit, day by day, shutting down? The flu kills 50-70,000 people a year and we have NEVER seen something like this, ever. If it's no big deal, why would people who make a lot of money off of sports just let all that money go? Normally, they would not give a crap if you say hey some people could die from this, they say oh well, they show must go on... I get a sense something nefarious is headed our way... According to the head of the NIH, this is 10 times worse than the flu. They estimate that it could infect 100 million Americans. If there is a fatality rate of 1% (some claim lower, some claim higher) that would mean it could kill 1 million Americans. So according to the NIH, it has the potential to me much worse than the flu. All of these measures we are seeing now are a way to try to proactively limit the amount of people who are exposed. This is what is hard for come people to grasp. If we stick with the 1% fatality rate as a possibility, on the one hand that sounds good. Hey if 100 people get it, only 1 will die. But on the other hand if 100 million people get it, and get it around the same time, than 1 million people may need emergency medical care all at the same time, which can overwhelm the medical system. www.businessinsider.com/top-highlights-of-dr-anthony-fauci-congressional-testimony-2020-3

Our Principal is phenomenal and our admin is doing a great job in dealing with this. I am also finishing up my masters and administrative certs and so I have had to do internship hours and be a quasi-administrator and it has been a great experience, especially with such a good group of administrators. We closed today for teacher planning. Not officially closed for next week yet but the groundwork is in place. We are ready to do lessons online. Teachers must have work hours that they are "available" and accessing their emails for any questions. I am not too concerned and it is a reasonable solution that will be as productive as possible. Pretty pleased with how our admin has handled it. My 6th period AP Econ class though is legitimately my favorite class that I have ever taught and I will miss them. And that subject is a little more difficult to teach online, like the maths and sciences. I'm assuming you already know about Jacob Clifford for AP Econ, but if not look up his videos. Great resource.

Like, many, I'm still figuring this stuff out, but I heard/read something that resonated with me. All of these social distancing measures are not necessarily about protecting yourself, but rather about protecting the more vulnerable members of our society. So in a way, you might look at social distancing as a form of service toward others or doing our part toward the group effort.

I believe there are two programs, one is called PEP, the other I'm not sure, that have been shown to reduce ACL injuries in female athletes. Not sure if there is ant evidence for males. Seems like it would be pretty easy to incorporate into off season and even pre practice warm ups. It also looks like many of us might already do a number of these exercises.

After watching a couple of Dixon's presentations and reading the feed the cats articles, here are thoughts I have:
Biggest takeaways for me:
-keep guys as fresh as possible for game day -don't let a real hard (too hard) practice today, ruin our ability to have a good day tomorrow -instead of the idea of "make practice so hard that the game seems easy" go with "the game should be the hardest part of the week". Plan your week with that in mind -make time for recovery in between reps, over weekend, etc.
Things I still feel unsure about: -how do you get all your stuff done throughout the week? -where is the fine line between minimum effective dose, and too little. -what if you're a no huddle team, how does that change things -what about linemen?

I love the idea of celebrating any kid's decision to continue playing sports in college...I don't like the idea of a kid signing a blank sheet of paper because it makes them complicit in the facade. It makes it seem like, "it only matters if you sign". How about have a "college sports brunch/lunch/ceremony" where everyone wears their college swag, take pictures with mom, dad, etc....but "fake sign".

www.reflexiveperformance.com/aboutSo I've been trying to learn a bit about RPR. I find it interesting but here are a couple of big questions I'm trying to answer: 1) For coaches who actively "do RPR" on their athletes, i.e. put hands on them, isn't there a pretty big liability concern here? For instance if a kid is complaining of lower back pain, you do some RPR on them, they initially feel better, but two weeks later are diagnosed with stress fracture. In other words, if you are "treating" a player, aren't you setting yourself up for trouble? Seems like it blurs the lines between doctor, trainer, physical therapist---all of whom have specialized degrees, and RPR person who has a certification. 2) If you don't put "hands on players" is there a way to still use some RPR exercises where players monitor and assess themselves? Definitely not hating on RPR, just trying to figure out, is it more of an exercise protocol or a "treatment" or "therapy" or what?

One more thing: this reminds me of a story that happened near me a few years ago. A senior high school girl, ended up playing in some key tennis match on the same day as her senior prom or Homecoming (can't remember). At any rate, she tanked the match to ensure she would not miss any of the dance activities. Her coach was understandably livid, but the girl straight up told him that the dance was much more a priority than tennis in her mind. I have trouble understanding that concept, but I do understand that kids have to prioritize things, and their priorities don't always line up with ours.

I think those are all good points, and I think they should have played BUT I don't know these kids, I don't know the internal dynamics of the team, I don't know how or if these kids communicated with their teammates/coaches, I don't know how big a thing "beach week" is to 17/18 yr old girls who are ending their high school careers, I don't know if beach week requires some sort of sizable down payment or deposit. Because I don't know all of these things, I would never publicly rip them. And no, he didn't use their names, but everyone in that community is going to know who the article is about. Where do we draw the line? Can a kid miss a game for a family member's wedding? Funeral? Now I know a wedding and funeral seem much more important than beach week, but I don't know if that's true for these girls.
And again, just to be clear, I would have counseled these girls to find a way to play the game, but I also get tired of seeing the other side of theses things where we seem to treat youth sports as life or death situations at times. Not sure that's good either.

While I don't agree with what the kids did, I'm not sure how I feel about an adult-- who makes a living in part by reporting on kids sports--ripping them in the local paper. But that's just me.

I don't like that we're all (coaches, kids, parents) in on the joke that there is nothing to sign for the D3 kids. It's like we're all taking part in the lie. I suggested we have a "college sport day" where anyone who is planning on playing in college gets a chance to wear their tshirt or whatever, take a few pics with coaches parents etc, have a cookie...I don't know. And then have a separate event for a kid who is actually signing a LOI. I chose to walk on at a program, and had someone suggested I sign a blank sheet of paper, I would have felt like a fraud. If a kid chooses to go play D3 we should be proud of him, celebrate him, and treat him with enough dignity to assume he doesn't want to fake anything. I don't know, I'm old. LOL

What would be the best time of year to try to visit with D1 position coaches to talk xs and os and technique? My assumption is they are too busy during season and spring ball, and they are on the road recruiting a bunch. Is there a natural "slow period" that would be conducive to meeting? Maybe May or June?

I follow a few football coaching pages on Facebook and I'm generally disappointed by them. They'll spit out a good piece of information every once in awhile but it's generally just a lot of "inspirational" rants and links to football scoop, Xs and Os Labs, and other AFCA blogs that I already look at. The majority of what's posted relates solely to "spread offenses". One page posted five iterations of how to use an H-back in a "spread offense" in three days; every link had the same information. And, there's just no point in even having a discussion about anything as I seriously doubt most of the guys on those pages are actually coaches. People comment on the links, it turns into a chalkboard war for a bit and then broils into a keyboard duel; waste of time. I will say this; one page posts old-school videos of drills that I have a hard time finding anywhere else and that's golden. The page had a five minute long video of a 90's Nebraska OL group working on their IZ steps and combos I couldn't find it anywhere else and it's awesome. Coachcb, what page had the 90s Nebraska stuff?

Coach, I'm taking a guess that your are referring to the OLP Posse...LOL. I really like Bentley's stuff and actually pay $10 a month for his site (although I'm in the process of deciding if it's worth it) but he has a few acolytes on twitter that can be a bit much to take in. I bet I know exactly what OL drill you're referring to. The funny thing is, I agree with probably 99% of what these guys preach...the thing that seems to be different about twitter is the mutual respect and camaraderie of a clinic. I'm all for debating safety and best practice, but I think it can be done in a respectful manner. I don't know, maybe I'm too old to understand the tone of twitter. Yes but its not just them its also those other issues I brought up. But in regards to them a few things I that grind my gears the most and again I like alot of his stuff and used to really enjoy following him. 1. the virtue signaling that they are the only people in the world concerned about the safety of their athletes 2. this idea that the only way to be safe is to do it their way 100% of the time 100% correctly 3. it seems like 75% of his time is spent in the pass blocking game - and that's just not who we are 4. not nearly enough talk of down hill gap run schemes and technique for my cup of tea 5. also the constant flaming of anything outside or contrary to their ilk or ways. 6. the HS guys who act like because they follow LB or do things his way that they are superior to everyone else and gods gift to the game and or LB himself...... you're not you're just a guy who follows LB. 7. and maybe this is just the contrarian in me. But I hate - I mean I really really loath group think. I hear you. And the truth is, (and again this is coming from someone who values his product) a lot of this stuff has been around quite awhile in other forms. I see a lot of Jim McNally carry over. Probably my biggest gripe, and I admit this might be due to the limiting factor of actually having a conversation on twitter, some of these guys act like there are two options: 1) option one = cave man style lead with your head 2) option 2 = their way. When in reality, many OL coaches have been trying to protect the head for many years in many systems i.e. veer option, wing t...etc. The final straw for me was when a high school coach stated he had coached in all of those systems so he knew what he was talking about. I was curious so I checked his age, and he was something like 23 or 24. I'm think, man you've coached in all of those systems at age 24? Damn.
