"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders, and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents; chatter before company; gobble their food and tyrannize their teachers." - Socrates

Your topic is unclear - do you mean separate days for offense and defense, days when only offense or defense are practiced? Or do you mean both offense and defense practiced on same day(s)? Sorry, I guess it isn't as clear as I intended. I'll try again. For those who don't have dedicated offensive and defensive players (one set of players that play defense and another that as offense - two platooning I think you guys call it?) how are practices structured?

Can you break down for me exactly how your practice schedule looks for each day that you practice and roughly how long you devote to each element of practice?
I've never coached or played on a team that did this but it seems to be the norm in HS football from what I gather so I am interested to see how you guys structure things.
Thanks!

i seem to have offended with a few with my block somebody comment thought it was something everyone disliked guess it is just a personal pet peeve I don't like it either. I worked with a guy who would always yell quit freelancing at the defense. This isn't inherently bad, but it would have been better to teach them why they weren't doing their job. And how do you do that from the sidelines where, I wager, most of these phrases occur?

"block somebody" in my opinion, nothing makes a coach sound more dumb than that phrase it just tells the whole stadium that you have no idea what is going on schematically, or how to fix his technique. us coaches do not spend time working on schemes for a kid to just "block somebody" they have a specific assignment and it doesn't help the kid in any way Disagree. Sure, plays are schematically designed for certain players to block defenders but there are many times that block isn't always there. Would you rather that player standing around blocking air or working to find someone to block? Same deal on interceptions. Go get a block and block someone are routine phrases. I'd say they have their purpose and don't believe them to be that damaging/dumb to say

What's the difference between 'turf shoes' and regular comfortable running shoes? I wear runners but if there's something more comfortable to be in then I'm happy to consider an alternative

Here's the only thing those kids need to know:
Does he show up to practice? Is he in the weight room with them? Does he give 100%? Does he listen to his coaches? Does he respect his team? Does he respect his teammates? Does he respect the coaches.
If yes to those questions then that's ALL I would care about and WOULD make it a point to highlight these things over his perceived 'arrogance' when talking to these other players.

Lineman are doing a regular practice. Down blocks doubles pulls, pass protection stuff. As far as being into it in October, may depend on how whether you are 4-6 or 9-1 It may...but it also may not. Obviously kids will more likely "check out" of a less successful season, but often when you are done, you are done. Amazingly enough I have seen teams (not that I coached) throw in the towel the semifinal week of the season. With regards to them having fun now, and wanting to keep pressing on--Well, I enjoy hot fresh glazed donuts when I buy a dozen...but my attitude changes a bit when I bite into #10 or so... The law of diminishing marginal utility. It's real and the OP should heed the warnings provided in this thread.

Just a caveat:
We were a team with one-way players but low roster size coupled with injuries are forcing us to use two-way players so we're trying to figure out how to structure things going forward.

Looking for help on how others structure or would structure practices if they mostly had a team of two-way players?
If you had 3 practices/week (Mon/Tues/Thurs) for about 7 hours in total practice time how would you structure things from an O/D/S perspective?
Never had to do such a thing but from reading this board it seems common place with many teams here.
Thx!

That's easy for coaches to say. We have the next year and the next and the next. The kids only get four years. I'm not in favor of hard and fast rules because there are always cases where a kid may have a perfectly legitimate reason to transfer. Should he be punished by being made to sit out 25% of their athletic career? If I was a lawyer-and if you make a rule like this you'll probably be talking to lawyers eventually- I'd ask you to prove that the kid wasn't transferring for AP Chemistry. From a legal perspective, the burden of proof would be on the kid to prove he is transferring for AP Chem (or another academic reason). This would be easy to prove given prior grades. If the GPA is 2.7 and they play a sport then probability is high that they are not transferring for advanced academics.

School choice must die....put a stringent transfer rule in and these things will slow to a trickle So making sure that the few boys who decide to play football stay at their school forever, is more important to than all students getting the best education or situation possible for them? Right. Because most of them are transferring (and accepted) for better academics and environments. Athletics has nothing to do with it? How about: you transfer and you have an athletic history at your previous school then you must sit out a year or two of all athletics.

My question is, are they providing any actual value or just a figurehead?
Like the 75 year old surgeon they keep around for knowledge but wouldn't dare let operate.

I'll take strength and attitude over caring about their size.
I have two grade 9 linebackers who jack up every OL player we have including one who is 6'4, 290lbs.
My experience with big OL on our teams has been that they are slow, lazy, weak, soft, and always 'hurt'.

Why do you play football? "Football is fun.....sir...." It goes like... Boone: "Put your hand down. You're smiling. Why are you smiling?" Petey: "Because I love football. Football's fun"

As much as I dislike tournaments I wouldn't say that they're completely useless. It does get the kids competing and defensively they get the kids used to communicating and playing the coverages under duress. The problem is that the juices do get flowing and sometimes winning becomes important and I don't like that much. I prefer "friendlies" against one other team. We've had two of them so far with a team whose coaches are friends of ours. We;ve run nothing but C.4 every snap and it's been very useful. absolutely. I'm like that with scrimmages also. Because we've had some "issues" in scrimmages as well. I hate 7 on 7 tournaments. I would 10 times over rather 7 on 7 vs someone I know, who I know their kids are well coached, who will line stuff back up and answer questions as I will for him. Because in July it's about getting better for the season, not winning. It's really practice and a learning time. Scrimmage wise - just run your chit. If you blitz a lot, then blitz. Just do what you do. But do NOT say "do whatever you want coach" and then b!tch when I do. It's not my fault your Oline is undisciplined and a walked up MIKE backer cuts the WILL backer loose through B gap...that's what we do asshat and we do it quite a bit. Just watch a game and you'd see that. It's true. They do lol
