Can you break down for me exactly how your practice schedule looks for each day that you practice and roughly how long you devote to each element of practice?
I've never coached or played on a team that did this but it seems to be the norm in HS football from what I gather so I am interested to see how you guys structure things.
Thanks!

Your topic is unclear - do you mean separate days for offense and defense, days when only offense or defense are practiced?
Or do you mean both offense and defense practiced on same day(s)?

Sorry, I guess it isn't as clear as I intended. I'll try again. For those who don't have dedicated offensive and defensive players (one set of players that play defense and another that as offense - two platooning I think you guys call it?) how are practices structured?

Monday is primary offense day...so 2 hr and 20 min practice...an hour and a half is to offense and 15 minutes special teams,35 min defense
Tuesday is flip flop but we go 45 minutes with offense and 1 hr and 10 min defense
Wednesday is a 2 hr practice with 1 hr for offense, 15 min specials, 45 min defense
Thursday is run through...only 40 min
Monday and Tuesday is more individual and teaching what they are going to see and what plays we will execute. Wednesday is competition wednesday...it is mainly group or team.
I am a defensive guy at heart but realize offense needs more time

Monday - 30 minutes of film for Friday's opponent, Team 5 Man Sled Push, Special Teams/Fundamental Circuit, Install/Walk through offense, defense, and special teams vs. Friday's Opponent
Tuesday - Primary Offensive Day (2 hrs. 20 min)- Indy, Inside Run, 7 on 7, Sudden Change Segment (offense, punt, defense, kickoff return) Offensive Team, Goal Line Segment, Team Defense, PAT/FG
Wednesday - Primary Defensive Day (2hrs. 20 min) Indy, Inside Run, 7 on 7, Sudden Change Segment (defense, punt return, offense, kickoff), Offensive Team, War Segment, Punt Block
Thursday - Game Walk-through
We will use the first 10 minutes of practice Tues and Wed to install Special Teams. We also only have 3 coaches on the field and 1 is usually running the scout team so we film every practice and make notes on HUDL. We have kids fill out charts for 15 plays as "Football Homework." Usually only takes about 5-10 minutes for kids to do this. Some kids take is seriously other kids don't.

I am a defensive guy at heart but realize offense needs more time Why? On defense indy periods involve coaching players to react automatically to various keys. That takes reps, which take time. You see different offenses every week. Adjusting takes time. I completely disagree that offense takes more time. Maybe a little but not a lot.

We split it up evenly currently.
If/when I have my own program, in season I'll go with installs on Monday, Tuesday Run emphasis (O & D), Wednesday Pass emphasis (O & D), Thursday walk-thru.
If you have enough coaches you can split your team between JV and varsity and get more reps and practice (JV practices defense while varsity practices offense , etc,)
Very torn on either alternating days offense and defense or keeping it split each practice. Pros and cons if both I think.

I think it's extremely important to work both offense and defense every day. Even if it's just for a few minutes.

How do you guys deal with scout team stuff when those players can barely stand up?

Why do some think offense needs more time than defense?
I can see a new offense every week whereas the offense will not. The offense will face some nuances which need to be accounted for buy the prep is no where close to the same as what a defense has to prepare for.

If the OC has his chit together offense should not need more time than defense. If your offense needs more time then you are probably struggling on offense. Defense has to plan for a lot more stuff than offense. All we have to do is execute our plays vs 2-3 fronts. Defense has to defend multiple formations and plays.
As far as scout team on offense days we blow the play dead as soon as the runner is tagged by a defender. We also require a certian number of first downs during team period. Makes it tough on the first team an helps the scout team cause they realize all they have to do is get to the guy. We still encourage good form by scout guys but we also dont expect them to always make the tackle so we help them with quick whistles.
Defensively our DC does a good job of matching his calls to an offensive play that puts the defense in the worst possible situation they can be in.

For offensive practice, I have two indy seesions. One where it is the OL/TE going over footwork and the skills go over agility and ball security. The next indy seesion the TEs join the skills and go over formations and basic stuff like blocking on power for example. Our last session is team.
With our defensive practice we start with tackling (non-contact), we have the LBs/DL break off into indy time, the DBs. 1st indy go over run fits, etc. The next indy session the LBs join the DBs and go over coverage. Final session is team.

We platoon 10th-12th grade. Freshmen play both ways so that we can see where to fit them in for our O and D schemes.
Practice is evenly split. Offense emphasis from 3:45-4:45. Freshmen are with Defense. 20 minutes of Indy/20 minutes of Group/ 20 minutes of Team. During the team session the Freshmen are on Team D on the other side of the field. Varsity Defense runs the scout team for the Varsity O during the Group and Team session. We then go to 15 minutes of ST. Next up is the defensive emphasis portion of practice. Same as the Offensive emphasis portion but now the Freshmen are with the Offense. The offense will run the scout sessions in Group and Team. Freshmen are on team O on the other side of the field during varsity team D.
Our Varsity guys get 40 minutes of indy everyday. It helped us tremendously this past season. It was our first year platooning.
