What is the best Do It Yourself money saver that you either have seen or have done? If you have a picture post it! Trying to find some ways to save money off things we spend so much on. Right now I need an easy way to store helmets (rolling preferably) and plan on making some do it yourself prowler sleds for summer training.
Thanks!

WE made a trap schute out off old sign posts and chainlink fence for the top. Cost us about $200 materials and welding for two of them one for Middle School and one for HS. Not very mobile but it works.

Really hepful. I'm gonna try and make some of these. Please keep posting anything made by you coaches, my team doesn't have the money to buy anything, so i'm trying to make everything build up. Anyone has ever made shields? If yes, what kind of material did you used?

A few summers ago, we made a trap chute out of 2x4 posts and PVC pipe. Held together by ropes. Cost around $200.

Went to the local bottling company and got some used coolers. Dropped some old weights in them and use them as prowlers. Old fire hose from the local dire dept. for running plays on air. Made a version of these to do KB swings:

I used some PVC pipe to make contraptions to teach my linemen proper steps. Has worked wonders for my kids.

prowler -if you have a turf field just use a plate from the weight room -if you have grass, go to the tire mart and get them to give you used tires

a good prowler is tires, also use wheel barrel that the lower half rotted away and use that as a prowler, i have made my own water trees, get a old fire hose from a fire dept for on air stuff, when i first started coaching i made chutes out of t posts and rope, it didn't last long, a good one for kettle bells is to get someone to give you their old laundry detergent containers and put quickrete in there for different weights

DL/OL hoops are something we make every year: 3 pieces of 5/6 foot 1/4 inch PVC and some connectors...easy easy storing helmets, we just threw hook screws into a wall....hang them by the facemask...

We use 18" PVC pipe for all of our linemen. They each have to grab one to start practice. When we do step drills to work on our run game blocking, they have to move the PVC in front of their foot to work on their first step. Pick it up and put it down. They also use them for plyos all summer. Cheap easy way to reinforce footwork for the big guys.

I wish I had some. I definitely will. The pipes are easier to store and get out than jump ropes for plyos. We just use 1" pipe. Got the idea from a coach we had who was in an NFL training camp. They'd even use it in pass sets to emphasize picking up the foot and putting it down quickly. Pipes go with players to every EDD. I'll make sure to get some footage in May when we do spring ball.

Love the scarecrow idea. Looks like my next project! I will tell you to use PVC for base too. I had old wood, I decided to recycle...

Anyone make Slosh Pipes? Have any recommendations for size and amount of water? What are slosh pipes ? I feel like I should know.... I made then with the help of my father-in-law. They are long pvc pipes with a cap on one end and a screw on lid on the other. They are filled with water, and as you carry them the water flows from side to side. It forces the athlete to use their core and stabilizer as they walk. Its actually pretty difficult as the longer and wider the pvc pipe makes it harder. I filled it with water and dont think its an exact science. It was more of the bigger and heavier ones for the stonger kids and the lighter for weaker. If it was too easy they had to just walk longer or do something first (push up.burpee) and then carry it. Cheap and easy to make. You can google it to see it

Anyone make Slosh Pipes? Have any recommendations for size and amount of water? What are slosh pipes ? I feel like I should know.... It's a PVC pipe filled with water. From what I researched I was going to get 4" diam. PVC either 8' or 10' long. Glue a cap on 1 end, fill with water(was thinking 2 with 3 gallons for the little guys, 2 with 4 gallons, and 2 with 5 gallons for the big guys), Glue a cap on the other end. Was going to color code the caps for the different weights. Then guys have to do certain drills, like carry chest high across their chest for 20 yards, carry over their head, squats, lots of things...also what I'm hoping to get more suggestions on. The water sloshing around is supposed to really help them develop their core and get a great physical workout. I'm gonna try it out for the 1st time this summer.

Definitely going to try this. Any other advice from the DIY's out there I'd love to hear it.

I saw these posts, and the posts about building the WR/RB Chutes on another page, and so I kind of tried to combine a couple of ideas. I created my own version known as the "Scarecrow Skill Chute" The idea is, you can use the chute during individual drills, and then you can place the chutes on the field with 3 or 4 "lineman" and maybe 1-2 "zone" defenders out in the flats or something like that. We built 5 of them. I saw the University of Oregon had managers who wore a special pair of shoulder pads with things sticking up to simulate hands of Dlineman during 7on. I saw that Belicheck had some managers holding Tennis rackets up to do the same thing. We don't have enough managers, or special shoulder pads, but we can sure build some PVC pipe and then move them around the field where necessary. I just took the specs for the lineman chutes, and the RB/WR chutes and I basically picked the mid-point. It means it is probably a little taller or wider than if it were bought from a catalog, but it also means that the lineman can use it if the WR/RB's aren't using it. So, they are 5' tall to the crossbar, and then the crossbar is 4' across. Then i just built a 1' extension on top, and a 1' extension from that at a 45 degree angle. Basically, it gives you the wingspan of a guy who is about 6'2" for the quarterback. I put sand in the bottom of it to give it some stability. Then, my wife took some old rags and sewed "flags" that we could put up to replicate 'hands' of DLineman. They just simply create an illusion of a big hand in the general area of a big DL paw. I have no idea if this is going to work, but we're gonna give it a shot this spring. Total cost was about $50 to build all 5 of them. Pic1Pic2Pic3Pic4

Have had tires cut in half to use as dline and oline, they are the perfect size to represent a person when going on air.
