I'll give some love to my home state of maryland. Make 51k with a master's and a 4.8k stipend on step one of the salary scale. However it is pretty expensive for housing around here. The areas that have success have very strong youth programs and community support. Some districts allow coaches to be an AD (mine doesnt). There are also a lot of beautiful areas around and the climate is good for the most part.

Coach, I certainly don't envy you in this situation. However, if the administration has your back, I'd say cut him. Sounds like you have a case to say that the kid was provided with the expectations and didn't follow them.

Just curious, where you guys are, what are the rules on guys playing JV? By me you can only play in one game per week, and we just have JV and V, no freshman teams.

35 varsity football players or 35 TOTAL football players (9-12)? We have around 280 boys in our school and 121 of them play football. (520 total students) We play teams with 700-900 total students but have been fairly successful, for the most part, because their programs may not have any more football players than ours. (we've had upwards of 140 some years). Get as many players out as you can. Find ways to get them involved - this is why we like playing 1 side of the ball because it gets more people involved & gives ownership to the program. What's the breakdown on that 120? How many on each team?

Just curious, what do you guys say to your team down big at halftime? My usual is " we can either keep fighting, or quit. Show that we can keep playing hard when things aren't going our way". Thoughts?

I've heard that Bull in the Ring is banned, but never seen it written anywhere. That being said, I see no real point in the drill.

The Varsity HC and I decided to give them off. On non-school days our guys have a rough time getting to school, and there is no JV game that week.

Guys, I'm a JV head coach. In the past only the Varsity has practiced on days where there is no school. My feeling is any player who is in town should be able to make an 8am practice. However, I don't want to have a practice if less than half the team shows up. Thoughts?

When I first started coaching on the frosh. level I was at a varsity game when we played Ballou HS from DC. I remember after the game the coaches walked out to shake hands and the other coach said "Who has our check" and nothing more. So I assume they got something for coming up (Northwest PA). Also know of a local team that went to Stubenville OH for their homecoming. I remember their HC/AD saying he couldn't turn down what they were offering to play the game. So yes I believe it still happens. That is very common with DC teams to travel. A lot of them will go to Ohio or West Virginia.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't anticipate playing my QB on defense this year. But it's always good to hear thoughts from you guys.

What are everyone's thoughts on playing your starting QB on defense? We've never really done it before

I'm in Maryland, privates don't compete for state titles. Dunbar in Baltimore just won there third straight 1A (smallest) title. At the higher levels there is more parity, though its usually the same teams in the hunt.

PA has them mixed together. Taking a look at our AAA bracket and at this point we're one of the few publics left. As a proud public school grad, beat McDevitt!!!!

In Oklahoma we get a flat stipend, really depending on school size. I work at a bigger school, so I get $5,000 for a varsity asst. and coordinators get $6800. All of us on staff make an additional $3,000 in the summer. So do you get 8,000 total?

Coach Woodall, what is your Jv team composed of, strictly sophomores and juniors, and can they play in both jv and varsity games?

Our school is just a hair under 2000, about 1950. We are around 900 boys, so 20% would be about 180, so we would have to cut if that many kids came out.

We were in a similar situation last year. We preached to our kids that all the pressure is on them to win, we have no pressure, we just have to go out and play.

I would love that Coach Gordon, but in our school system, we are only given a V and JV team. 180-200 kids between those two teams would be a lot. Though, if we consistently got those numbers we could probably have a frosh and two jv teams.

Just curious, how many kids do you guys have on your teams. We are a school of about 1800-1900. We have 57 on varsity and 50 on JV.
