Does anyone have any experience setting up one of these? I'm currently coaching wrestling and we are looking to set up our own fundraising mechanism. Thanks in advance.

Just wondering, how often does your staff meet as a whole? In the off-season and during the season?
School I'm at now we rarely meet. I like it because I can plan on being home at a certain time, and I very much appreciate that the Head Coach values my time. However, I think we could meet more just in terms of everyone having one consistent understanding of what we are doing, gameplan, etc.

Numbers have been on a slight decline in our area for a couple years, but this year they seem to be way down. We have 31 on varsity and 24 on JV in a school of 1400. Nearby I've heard of bigger schools having as few as 17 on their Varsity. This is in suburban Maryland. Seeing any of this in your areas?

Anyone going this weekend? Our staff is going as a group to the Northern Virginia Clinic in March, but I'm thinking of heading up after school Friday.
Any thoughts/experience on these speakers
Juan Castillo (Ravens OL) Shawn Liotta (Clairton HS OC) Drew Gibbs (Ramapo HS HC)
Thanks

Had our first scrimmage today. Defense was flying around and caused a couple turnovers. Offense moved the ball first series. However, other team started blitzing and we couldn't pick it up to save our lives. Entire offense grinded to a halt. Me being the OL coach, it was particularly frustrating. First day in pads today. We have a blitz happy defense. Our oline, that I coach, looked like they had never blocked a moving target before. It was like, "Hey, that guy is moving faster than the sled or 4th string guy holding the bag. Plus he hit back coach." Same guys that handled blitzes 6 weeks ago at camp. Plenty of work to do. And, we were 0 for summer school. Sent from my SM-G900V using proboards Yeah, coaching the OL is never boring. First to get blame, last to get credit. But I don't want to coach any other position.

I did an informal crunching of the numbers and came up with about 70 hours a week between teaching and coaching. The problem last year was I taught 35 minutes from home and coached about 50 minutes to an hour from home. Now I coach and teach at the same school that is 20 minutes away. However in that 20 minutes there is never any traffic and a total 5 turns including out of my neighborhood and into the school.

a typical mon-wed schedule the past several years has been something like this: 6:00 am - arrive at school, open facility, quick meeting/prepare for day 6:30 am - freshmen begin arriving 6:45 am - freshmen lift meet or lift / practice 8:30 am to 3:30 pm - teach 3:30 pm - varsity position meetings/film 4:00 pm - varsity/jv practice 6:00 pm - upload practice film, start laundry, etc. 7:00 pm - leave school thursday will start an hour later but may not leave field house until after 10 pm, depending on game location friday starts at 7:30 and my "day" doesn't usually end until i've broken down the night's game on hudl - typically around 1:30-2 am saturday's we usually go 7 to about 4. this includes lifting, meeting with team, and game plan sunday - the past 7 years, we haven't come in at all and just done specific tasks at home via hudl/google docs the hours add up simply due to all the 'non-football' things that you have to do....laundry, equipment, film, facilities, etc. not to mention the school work needed to be a good classroom teacher. so, while 90-hours a week may not be 'typical' it isn't necessarily 'atypical' either. Coach, what do your freshman do afterschool if they practice in the morning? Do they lift after school if they practiced in the morning?

I'm not sure what you mean by that... It was a joke... The only time that guy's family sees him is when they walk him out to the car sometimes before dawn. His kids seem depressed. My joke was that you said you'd be moving to Texas, I pretended you would have his schedule, which means nobody would ever see you..... Oh, ok. I'm a little slow sometimes, forgive me

Gotcha. I would be willing to work similar hours, but I want to prepare my wife accordingly as this would be an adjustment for her.

Are the hours in the video below normal for coaching in Texas? My wife and I have talked a lot about moving to Texas, so if we decide to move I'd like to be prepared.

28 football state champs? How do you get that many state champs with only 9 divisions? I'm assuming they don't really play for a true state championship, but break the state up into geographic groups (or whatever word they use) and have the teams within those areas each play for "state." So maybe they have the schools divided into 5 classes by enrollment, then broken down into maybe 4 different "groups" based on geography. 5X4=20 different state champions, right there. Is that how it works, jaydub66? I know that's how it's done in some places. Virginia does this, IIRC. For example, they have two different "Class AAA State Champions" or whatever because the schools from the Eastern part of the state have a separate playoff from the schools in the Western half. I may not have this exact, because I've never coached there and our state doesn't do it this way, but that's how it was explained to me when my cousin's team was in the (Western group) playoffs the last few years. Virginia actually plays for entire state championships. The classes are split into regions, and usually a team from the Northern Region plays a team from the southern, but only the winner of that game is the state champion.

I'm not working it this summer, but I've worked summer school in the past. Around here it's half day and we lift in the afternoon so works out perfectly.

I'm not the Head Coach and I've had it both ways. I've worked for head coaches who wanted everyone to talk and some who wanted no one to talk. I always feel like I have great things to say to my position group, but sometimes I'm at a loss for words with the whole group. Sometimes I hear other coaches at the end of practice and they really say something great, but I've learned to be myself and don't force it.

I teach students with moderate to severe disabilities, including several with Down syndrome and several with autism. I don't understand who would complain about this. Ok, according to the letter of the law the kid doesn't get a varsity letter. How insecure does someone have to be to point that out to the principal?

I started 2 years ago with 9 total for 3 programs and have slowly added coaches to fill needs and hopefully reach our goal of 2 platooning (at least for coaches). Now I have 16... 8 for varsity including myself, 4 for JV, and 3 for Freshmen. And I have 1 that is part time for JV/Freshmen. I try not to be a jerk but sometimes I have to just to put them back in line. Luckily, most of them are guys I've known and worked with for years. For practice, are your JV/Varsity together?

I feel lucky as the guy we buy the players gear from gives us the stuff for free because we give him so much business with 100 kids ordering gear.

The stats in high school are somewhat skewed due to the vast talent disparities. However, this guy really knows what he is doing. Everything he does is about giving his offense as many chances as possible to score. I'm not sure if I'd ever go as far as him and never punt, but it certainly has me thinking about going for it more often.

Our school went when we ran the flexbone. The coaches are very down to earth and generous with their time. You get to see practice and listen to some sessions with the position coaches.

I coach in Maryland, wanted to know how many other coach huey addicts there are in this fine state. Either reply here with where you coach, or PM if you don't want it to be public knowledge. Would like organize a Maryland Coach Huey meet-up one of these days.

Just curious, outside of Texas where all coaches are in the building, how many coaches do your schools have in the building. We have ranged from 2-4, are at 2 right now. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using proboards

I've coached in several states, currently in Texas. I live in a 2,200 sq. ft. 4 bedroom house in a very nice area (paid $152K). I'm a coordinator at a 5A school and teach 1 PE class a day. My salary is just over $70K and my coaching stipend is $13,000. My office sits in a $5 million dollar field house. HC teaches no classes, makes $120k plus camp and clinic money. Now that I'm here, I will never leave Texas. Man, I am really jealous. Is your school hiring? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using proboards
