Guys, I'm a JV head coach. In the past only the Varsity has practiced on days where there is no school. My feeling is any player who is in town should be able to make an 8am practice. However, I don't want to have a practice if less than half the team shows up. Thoughts?

Whatever you do, make sure your expectations are communicated clearly and your punishment is firmly adhered to.
We had a practice on Halloween. Kids didn't come. We had 16 of our 25. Our policy is kids who don't practice, don't play. We played our rivals that week and only played 16 kids the entire game. Those who missed weren't even allowed to suit up or get out of school early to get on the bus with us. Four years later and they were all on varsity and had 100% attendance for their Halloween practice.
If you feel it is important to have the practice, have it. But, be ready to harshly deal out consequences. If you fail to, the kids will never take your threats seriously again.

We have always had problems on Labor Day. Sadly this usually falls on the week we play our rival. We used to practice in the morning 9AM, now we have moved it to 3:40, same time we practice after school, and have very little problems with kids getting there. It gives their family enough time to get back from any vacation they took.

August (insert date here), it is football time. It becomes mandatory on that day. That is part of the commitment you make when you join the team. We practice at 9am to 12pm roughly. I want the day off just as much as the kids, but there is work to be done. I can make it to my family bbq a little late.

We always practice on Labor Day, and some other days when school is not in session. It is mandatory.

We always practice at 6 pm on Labor Day. Mandatory. They have Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday. Families are back by Monday evening. They can practice. You don't show up, it's unexcused and you don't dress that week. NEVER a varsity issue, will have a freshman or two miss---they don't dress.

With varsity it's never a question. With JVs sometimes the yound kids' parents can be pretty clueless about how HS sports work. That's why I ask if there's a JV game that week. There have been years when the JV schedule didn't start until the following week. If there was no game we just gave the JVs the day off. No reason to have a problem when you don't need to. Obviously, if you have a game coming up you practice and expect them there.

The Varsity HC and I decided to give them off. On non-school days our guys have a rough time getting to school, and there is no JV game that week.

We practice at 5:30 pm on Labor day. This is in the expectations and dates to remember that goes out to all the parents.

We never practice on Labor day. Over the last 24 years as being a head coach we have found that it has been a huge hassle to gather everyone, we family taking mini vacations, kids not having a ride. People used to assert that we did not work hard enough and that we were taking it to easy and the game not serious enough. We certainly do, we tell the kids early on that we will be off on monday of that week and we will stay a little longer on tuesday, wednesday and thursday if necessary to off set monday. It allows everyone to spend more time with their family and so far it has never been the difference between victory or defeat. Do i work on that monday, yes, do my coaches work on that monday, yes, on their own each to their own needs. Just because you practice on this date means you are any tougher or better than people that don't. To each his own but there are many ways to skin a cat as the old saying goes. Also, when we have an off week during the season we give our kids monday and friday off of that week,as in weights and conditioning but no practice. We do practice on tues, wed and thursday about 30 minutes longer than normal to make up for that day, it gives the kids, parents and coaches two three day weekends and recharges everyones batteries, it allows kids the time to heal and rest for the next part of the season. Young coaches have a reason for everything you do and do not be bullied into doing things just because that is way things have always been done before you. I guess what i am saying is walk your own path.

We have tried 2 ways:
If you have a game that week, it becomes your 1st day of practice & therefore it is mandatory. You need to address this by sending out a letter to parents with the pre-season schedule along with a meeting with players & parents.
If it is still pre-season, you can practice or scrimmage vs. another team. By doing this, I would bet that everyone would be there. It is great for competition amongst your players if decisions need to be made on personnel if someone decides that they have something more important to do not to mention that the effort in practice will be better. This needs to be addressed in the same manner as listed above.
If you start no later than 9AM, they have the rest of the day to do whatever or you can have the parents feed both teams. They had all summer for vacation!

"We labor on Labor Day."
It is Monday of the second game week.
It is required for all levels.
It is on our Calendar which is published in January, given to kids in at Sign-up in May and handed out at Parents' meeting in June.
There are consequences (PIE and demotion-loss of PT) for those that miss.
Having said that, our kids-parents have three full days off because we play the previous Thursday due to the holiday weekend.
That should be enough for anybody.

yes we always do, usually a non-region game but we still follow the same plan, we tried it for several years, practicing on labor day and no matter what was planned we always ran into key members of our team being gone due to one reason or another. I just remember always coming home after a practice frustrated because it almost became a wasted practice no matter how well planned, Monday is our light day anyway and like I stated before just add a few more minutes onto tues, wed and Thursday....and everyone, including me has a relaxing day. We live in a small town where football is very important and it has taken a while to not see us practicing two a days and other things that have gone on forever and now have changed. We have no hell week, we have no two a days and we go away to no camps and stay in hot cabins and eat food I had rather not talk about. I sleep in my own bed, use my own shower and everything has worked out all right...in the grand scheme it is one day. Please don't think that we are lazy we just have a system and that is away to squeeze a little break into the year

We don't practice on Labor day if our game is on Saturday.(It is this year) I think it motivates them the week before to get what we need in or we go on labor day.

We always practice on labor day. It's told to the parents in our spring meeting. We used to go at 6:00pm thinking that let people go out of town and get back. We've gotten a lot of feedback from parents that most don't go out of town but would like to have bbqs and family get togethers in the afternoon. So now we've moved it to 8:00am. Never had a problem. The kids know in May that they won't be dressing for our 2nd game if they miss labor day.

I've never been part of a program that doesn't practice on Labor Day (except for JVs who don't have a game that week) and we always practice in the morning for the reason that you've mentioned.
