Just curious, what do you guys say to your team down big at halftime? My usual is " we can either keep fighting, or quit. Show that we can keep playing hard when things aren't going our way". Thoughts?

Emphasize small battles. Usually if you are down big at halftime, it is a talent differential. Give small specific goals to try an obtain in the second half, since the overarching goal is probably out of reach.

coachd is correct. Emphasize the little battles, first downs, 3 and outs, force a turnover, etc. Just focus on getting better each and every down.

Up big or down big we emphasize the following 1. The score right now is 0-0 go win the second half. 2. Do Your Job.

Pretty much agree with what others have said: emphasize what you want to accomplish in the second half and tell them why you believe they can accomplish those things despite what has happened in the first half. They're not stupid, you've got to have more than just some rah rah stuff.

Whatever you do say, DON'T say "They just scored 48 in a half...WELL, WE CAN TOO!!"

Makes as much sense as the score is 0-0.
I really think you should only say that if the score is tied. JMHO

I tell them this is an opportunity.........
How we respond to this adversity will become important at some point in our season.
This next half needs to be played hard, sharp, and focused, because it will pay dividends down the road.

I ask the kids to turn the scoreboard off in their minds-it doesn't matter anymore anyway. I ask them to come out in the second half and as individuals, win each play. Put all of your focus into the current play and be the best at doing your job one play at a time. Kick that guy's behind in front of you, one play at a time. It's a true test of a man's character how he plays the second half when facing a halftime deficit of 44-0. How will he respond? It's something that will prepare him for life after football because at some point in his life, adversity will strike. How will he respond then when he has a family counting on him to provide?

I'm big on pride at that point.
Lots have talked about it, but the fight turns into "what kind of person are YOU?" I wanna see what you are about.
And I like "win the half". Gives a goal thats obtainable and something to compete towards.
