Mine gets added to my teaching salary as well so most of it goes to the government. What I have left over I'll buy a tank of heating fuel so I don't freeze to death this winter.

I think you are talking about Fred Fridley of Watford City. I do not know much about him or his secrets. However, in ND towns seem to specialize in sports. Watford City is a bit of a football town so I assume that contributed to his success. Irish, you could probally have your brother e-mail him for some advice. If you go to www.sendit.nodak.edu and go to the school websites link the school usually has staff e-mail posted. another small town coach that has been succesful that would be worth talking to would be Larry Sandy of Velva. Velva has won 5 of the last 6 Class A state titles

I'd say the most predominent offense scheme is the I. Defensivley I think the 5-3 is probally used most.
As far as becoming a head coach. The way it seems to work up here is that you are hired as a teacher and if you happen to be able to coach it is a plus. I hardley ever see a head coaching position advertised.
The best thing is to get a teaching position at a school where a head coach has recently left.

ND Coach can vouch for this. This was a speech by my HS football coach at half when I was playing. We were getting beat like 21-0 to a team we should were even with. Coach comes in and starts talking about how he couldn't sleep the night before and he turned on the tv. He started watching a show about guys in prison being "cornholed". He said that the inmates started to accept and ended up enjoying it. We started looking at each other were like what the heck. He goes well men thats whats happening here tonight your getting "cornholed". And you like it. He says "they are greasing you up and packing your sh** and you like it". We were like is he really saying this. Somehow it kind of worked. We go out and played great in the second half and lost 27-28, probably would have won had I not thrown an int late in the game. We still laugh about his cornhole speech. I was going to tell this one but you beat me to it. But you forgot to add the part where he went around the room and asked the players "Do you like it?" That was an absolutly hillarious half time, I had to try so hard not to bust up laughing. But it must have worked because we pert near came back.

Fortunatly we do not have much of that crap happening here in ND (Recruiting off of other teams, renting out houses, etc.). If a kid transfers schools he has to sit out the next semesters sport. So if he transfers in the spring he can't play football or the first part of basketball next fall. The only away around this is to have the family move, but fortunatly around here there are not a lot offamilies arn't willing to uproot their lives so a kid can play a better school. It does happen occasionally, but not often. When it does it is more than likely the parents and other athletes pushing it, not the coach

North Dakota varies. The school I am at now pays 2200 for a head job and 1500 for an assistant. I recently got a new job that pays assistants 2000 and head coaches 2600. I have seen schools that pay head coaches 3500 and assistants 2500.
The better paying schools as far as coaching supplemts go are in the eastern part of the state, I think.
Teaching bases tend to be low. Anywhere from 23000 to 29000, depending on location and school size

I know how you feel on the low numbers wildcat. we'll have 18 kids out next year, and that is from 2 schools. Although since basketball ended we have had 12 of those 18 lifting, among those who arn't are the senior class, next year we are going to have junior leadership

The North Dakota Coaches Association (covers all sports) has an advisory committee (a separate committee for each sport) that recommends changes to the High School Activities Association. However, the Activities Association never listens to the football advisory committee.
Being a member of the Association gets you a pass that is good for any regular season event sanctioned by the Activities association (Football, Basketball, volleyball etc.) However, come playoffs the pass is no good. For football most games are on Friday so the pass never gets used.
When it comes to postseason awards (Coach of the year) you have to be a Coaches Association Member to be eligible.
On the whole our Coaches Association is one step above useless

tell us about coaching up in ND is there a football coaches association? stuff like that? We have a state coaches association. The yearly convention is coming up in July. Craig Bohl and Dale Lennon are the big name speakers. There is 4 divisons: AAA which is the big schools Fargo, Bismarck. AA would be medium sized schools like Carrington (125-200 Males 9-12). A is your smaller sized 11 man schools like Harvey and Velva (75-115 males 9-12). The smallest is 9 Man which is the division with the most schools. The season seems to be squeezed in between harvest season and deer hunting season. We only get 8 regular seasons games, there is an option for a 9th game if you want to play on a Tuesday and the right away again on Friday. I wish the activities association would add a week to the season but that will never happen. There is pretty good fan support, the smaller towns can draw around 500 or so for a game, which isn't bad considering the size of the towns. I would say the most common offense is the I though there are more teams going to the spread and there are a few Double Wingers. The most common defense would probally be the 5-3. There is some real good college football in state: the Dac-10 is probally one of the toughest NAIA conferences and both UND and NDSU have one multiple DIV II titles and NDSU has held their own at the 1-AA level. Thats about all I can think of now.

Simulating a backer in the hole in a 2 minute offense vs air session, the FB lifted his head up and gashed me in the chin (with the screw flange of the facemask).....I was supposed to get stitches - the thing wouldn't stop bleeding. I still have the scar on my chin from when I was sliced by a chin strap buckle. Playing scout QB. a DL wrapped me up and caught me right on the jaw. Used a few butterfly bandages to seal it up till practice was over, then got 4 stiches that night

North Dakota State would be an excellent choice. They run a coaches clinic in the spring where they take the area coaches out on the field for a practice. Coach Bohl has done a fantastic job turning the Bison into one of the top teams in 1-AA, even coming within one point of beating the Gophers.
I haven't seen them play this year, they have been on the road mostly this year. But, I know they run a base 4-3 so you should be able to get some good stuff defensively. Offensively I am not sure.
