Have you, as a coach, ever been blasted by a player at practice?
I mean physically slammed, hit, crunched, etc.? NOT ON PURPOSE, OF COURSE.
Yesterday, I got clobbered. First time in 15 years that I have been crushed by a player.
I was standing on the goaline working with our punt returners (Jhanawa, GoldenBear76, and Saint will understand why). Our punter kicks the ball. The ball hits the 5 yard line and bounces (new turf provided a nice hop). The ball goes over my head into the end zone. While my eyes follow the ball into the end zone......WHAMMMMMO!!!!!! One of the receiver who was trying to keep the ball from going into the end zone slams into me going FULL SPEED!!! He is the second fastest kid on the team as well. I get up and I am 8!!! yards deep into the end zone.
In a lack of character moment I drop the......"WHAT THE F&*% ARE YOU DOING?". I was {censored}. I fully believe the kid could have stopped. He said he was following the ball and trying to keep it from going into the end zone. I understand that. When the ball bounced I was sure he would have seen me.
Bottomline I got launched. I apologized to him a few minutes later from launching a tirade on him. Then we laughed and got insight from others who said they saw the bottom of my shoes as I went airborne.
Today, I am sore, the neck is stiff and I think I am mildy concussed.
The moral to this story.....watch your back!!!!

He was shot out of a cannon.....I think.
I am 200lbs. + a few....and I caught flight for at least 5 yards. 2nd fastest kid on the team running full speed. I think I looked like your avatar of Earl Campbell there. Except I didn't see the kid hit me.

Wow! Its funny that you brought this up.
During pre-game I was walking on our side of the field near the 30 yard line or so. The QBs and WRs were throwing pass patterns from the goal line going out. I usually watch our team warm up so Im always facing what our players are doing but this day one of the Coaches from the other team yelled to get my attention. I turned to look in his direction and to ask how he was doing, how are things going when all I felt was a BIG NUDGE. It almost knocked me down but I maintained my balance. Litte did I know the WRs had started to run Post patterns and apparently I was right in the way! The kid was a 5'5' 110 receiver (thank goodness) who doenst play much. Later on the trainer told me that he had a mild concusion but he would be okay.
LOL!

When the offense is running plays with the head coach, I used to stand with the defense in a position about where the middle linebacker would play to observe, give instructions, and generally line up the defense in a way to give the offense the most work. I was trying to fire up the defense at one practice, telling then to hit and make good tackles, etc., etc., etc., and got too excited. The next play was right up the middle, the back was coming at me full tilt, and I essentially tackled him. Head coach was not happy and admonished me, telling me to stop messing up his offense and tackling the players. I try to stand on the side and not to get so excited these days.

I once tore my AC joint demonstrating circuit tackling (tackling a sausage bag into the ground)...........whoops - well, we don't do those no more. I got up like nothing happened, though I was about to pass out because I was so light-headed....my collar bone was popped up over my shoulder.(necessitated reconstructive shoulder surgery a year later because of a previously torn cuff from rugby)
Simulating a backer in the hole in a 2 minute offense vs air session, the FB lifted his head up and gashed me in the chin (with the screw flange of the facemask).....I was supposed to get stitches - the thing wouldn't stop bleeding.

Personally never been trucked at practice but the best I saw our special teams coach was watching the extra point team facing them right over the center. We told him to move several times since the kicker was iffy at best that year.....so of course he refused and got blasted right in the side of the head with a kick. He just kept going and told them to move to the hash. During a water break he finally said he didn't rember any thing after that for a good five minutes but couldnt go down in front of the kids bcause that would show them weakness. Next time we did extra point he stood behind the kicker to caoch LOL

Don't fumble the snap while running scout team QB. I got a concussion from a DT diving for the ball.

I still have the scar on my chin from when I was sliced by a chin strap buckle. Playing scout QB. a DL wrapped me up and caught me right on the jaw. Used a few butterfly bandages to seal it up till practice was over, then got 4 stiches that night

Sorry TTH, but I laughed my butt off when I read that.... 8 yards, most excellent air time dude Kinda funny last night at practice, I had a former player (now a stud varsity tailback in HS) step in for scout offense tailback in shorts/shirt to run some plays against the defense behind a full go line, he ran an off tackle play and tried to put a move on one kid while not seeing the MLB coming full speed, got TRUCKED, WHAM, looked like he got hit by a bus..... by an eight grader. He wasn't hurt but sure was embarrassed. I couldn't do anything but laugh and tell the boys to take it easy on the older kids, they don't move as well as they used to........lol

Worst I've had is showing the kids how to hold the hand shield to help the lineman learn how to block.
Took a helmet right to my forearm. Huge welt almost immediately, intense pain from one of my bulldog guards.
Of course, one of my kids says, "can you show us again coach?"

So we work the same punt return drill yesterday and the "smart a**" kid who drilled me says calmly.
"Uh, you might want to move Coach".
I did and went unscathed yesterday. Whew!

A few years ago I got smacked on the sideline. I misjudged the speed of the pursuit on a play toward our sideline, tried to restrain the players from running into the bench, and just got drilled. Went airborne. Fortunately, I rolled when I hit so it wasn't any big deal. It's kind of peaceful floating like that.

While holding a dummy for OL blocking drills one of our players hits the bag and dislocates my thumb. Same dude sent me to the chiropractor after a brief horsing-around wrestling match. Pinch nerve in my neck. Kicker of it all was he is our head coaches son. good for some laughs in the coaches office. getting old sucks.

tothehouse, know that I am laughing with you, not at you but that is the funniest thing I have ever heard happen to a coach in practice.
I got blasted one time on the sidelines. had my back the to the field, sideline play, late hit and bam I got blasted. funny thing is, the players I were talking to, who were facing the field did not move either, so they broke my fall.

No that is really funny! I could just imagine all the ribbing you took from the staff over that hit. I hope you taped practices. I can only imagine the amount of pain in your pride youtook over that.

Wish there was footage as it would have made highlight reels everywhere. To a man, the other coaches said that if I was in flight any longer they would have to start the movie!!! I got ribbed, but it hasn't been that bad. I thought it would be worse. I think if I was knocked out completely....there might be something. Most said they couldn't believe I got up right away. Hardest I have been hit EVER!!!

we were playing a game last year, when the pursuit of a sweep came right into me, one of those plays where you can't go right or left, just backed up and they were right on top of me. Thier defensive kid comes barrelling into me and hits me and bounces off like he hit a wall. He got up and smiled about it. unfortunely it was our biggest hit of the night, they thumped us.

Had a kid hit my elbow (with his helmet) a few years ago and my bursae sac "blew up". Looked like a volleyball was under my skin! Funniest story I have is from long ago - almost had forgotten about it - we had just kicked off and the teams were preparing to line up. The ref picked up the kicking tee which was still on the field and threw it to our sideline. We had a coach who always had his hands in his pockets. I can still see the arc of the tee flying toward our bench and - hitting our coach right in the crotch! Apparently the flight (and impact) had been witnessed by our sideline and both teams on the field becasue it took about 2 minutes for everyone, including the refs, to get up and stop laughing!

Game last year, opening kickoff - opponent kicking to us. Their kicker kicked it out of bounds. While I was following the ball to see where it was going out, to my right, our all-state DL, who is on kick return, de-cleats a kid right into me. I was pretty foggy for a down or two and my assistant was real nervous about having to call the game on offense. Fell on the back of my neck and was sore a few days. One of the guys still reminds me that his most vivid memory is seeing my feet well above my head as I headed to the turf. My poor DL was pretty upset about clocking me, but he went on the have a great game. Sad thing is that our game video moves off the part of the sideline where it happened just before I was sent into orbit. I've often wondered what the poor kid from the other team thought.

Last year I tried to show a young punter how it's done after it had rained all morning. I slipped flat onto my back and got the wind knocked out of me. I got up and put the whistle in my mouth to change to inside run, but I didn't have any air to blow. I just stood there for about 20 seconds with the whistle in my mouth. Finally I got my wind and was able to change the drill and we went to skelly (wrong drill, i think i was concussed). My neck still hurts a year later and I think the assistant coaches almost blew a gasket laughing afterwards.
