What is this style of offense? What does it look like? What are the top formations and base plays?

Yeah, it is a great idea! We do a drill exactly like it but with an old volleyball standard! Why I did not think of it....I have no idea! I know one thing...I would buy five or more of those things right now if they were on the market! It is amazing if you force kids to catch with their hands...how much they improve in a matter of days!

As Airman said....Rep, Rep, Rep. We ran it fairly successfully this year in high school. Threw for 2000 using this and empty sets. It is great, but you must get your QB to go through the progressions. To do that we used the noose, mesh, pat n' go drill everyday!!!!! We threw a lot of routes on air. Barrels and or dummies are critical for this weekly. This helped our QB's a lot working against the weekly defensive scheme we would see. The Mesh and Shallow packeage are awesome especially in certain places on the field! Hatcher's videos are simple but...excellent

A few pieces of advice. One I would rather lose players than lose control! I do not care if he is the only JV QB!! Find someone who can make it work. Explain to this young man that his attitude is probably part of the reason he is the JV QB. If he has any aspirations of moving up things need to change. Second, your head coach... I hope would not want a cancer on the team. I would hope your program would rather have good people than good players on your team. If your higher ups do not have your back then you need to rethink your position. You are a young coach and no matter what your experience or background is... they should be there to mentor and help you. Everyone has troubles! My last piece of advice is man up and let him know who is charge. If he cannot except that then too bad... it is your show!!!!Refer back to lose players and not control!!! Good luck! Be firm, but fair!

I am with Knighter on this. I do not think high school coaching should all be based on W's & L's....I think it has to do with how you run a program, organization, and most importantly how you treat kids! I do believe you have to have a solid football background, knowledge of the X's & O's, as well as be able to coach them up! I just think being a head football coach is so much more than just the wins and lost column!!! In high school you have very little control of the talent you get. The parents send you the best that they have! It is what you do with that talent pool off and on the field that makes you a good coach!

you were to put one sign outside of your weight room that has a saying on it(i.e. Notre Dame's Play Like Champions Sign).... what your program and that room stands for what would it say?

Found this board just recently...it is great to find coaches who have as much passion for the game and willingness to learn as I do.
I am a head coach in Iowa...I have been exposed to the Pro I, Power I, Wing-T offenses. Defensively I have been around the 50 look most of my career. Currently I ma running a Empty set/ Spread offense and a 50 defense.

fourth and a foot...throw the ball and it is incomplete. The refs spot the ball and signal first down the other way. Call timeout...As I walk to the huddle I start talking to the side judge about how close it is. Just throw out..." since I called a timeout you could measure!!!" They did and it was a first down!!! Gained a foot and half on an incomplete pass and got the first down! Needless to say the other sideline was going bananas!!!! Felt kind of guilty about that one!

Jet, I am sorry for some odd reason everytime I try to PM you my computer freezes up!!!! I did not forget about you! I will keep trying!
The book by Rudy Payne is excellent and the theory/reasoning is almost scary! I would reccommend it to every coach out there!

Guys, I am not sure of the socioeconomical make up of your districts, but I thought I was being forced by our district to survive another one of those in services, but it was about poverty training. The whole thing deals with kids, poverty, and the why....when you look at behaviors of these people! Their is book A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Rudy K. Payne. Believe it or not it has been very helpful for me as coach and teacher and has help me through my approach to athletes and how to get them turned in a direction to be successful!

Jet,
Set up weekly or bi-weekly grade checks. Communicate with the athletes about their grades....how they can improve, what they need to do, and if they need any extra help. Before you talk with the athlete s make sure to talk with the teachers. I have found out if you talk with teachers about athletes grades and the athletes will put forth a better effort things tend to swing in the positive direction.
I also have set up study tables! If they are receiving anything below a C- they must attend at least twice a week for at least an hour! I can have them go more if they need it. Here in Iowa they just passed a No Pass No Play rule! It has alot of crazy bi-laws....it has forced coaches to beon top of the academic game!
Coach it works, but it takes a lot of effort! At one point in the second trimester I had 21 out of my 50 returning varsity players with an F! Did all of the above and narrowed it right down to 3 or 4! If you need more details just holler! Good luck!

I am struggling to get out a solid letter to parents. I want it to be short and to the point, but leave an impact on how important summer weights are, camp times, etc...
Does anyone out there have a good example they are willing to share!??

Knighter,
Most of those Iowa guys you have on your list are pretty accessable. Either through clinics or heck just give them a call and they will be more then happy to help you out...if the time of year is right for them.

You have to start your QB accuracy! Move to pass protection. Make a commitment to the system. I agree with a lot that is being said above...you must play the match ups, recognize the hots, and figure out what and how you want to approach the system (i.e. fast with no huddle, slow using the clock and recoginizing the defense, or a combo of both). Their is a lot to consider when looking at this offense. I will tell you this you need to start getting guys throwing and catch right now. Find good accuracy drills and hands drills and work them to death!
