I was wondering if the Air Raid only works in the college level? I seen some people talk about RiverSide ? i guess there from Illinois. I am a college student going into teaching and also am a OL coach at a local high school. My goal is to become a Head coach and I am a big fan of the Air Raid and many other spread offenses. Im a huge Mumme, Leach, and Rich Rod.. fan. Please give me some info. THANKS.

it is like any offense, it is all about reps. qb and wr have to play catch every day not every other day like most people practice. the timing is critical. reps, reps and more reps.

The Airraid was designed for HS, and there are HS that throw it quite a bit all over. Tony Franklin made a second career of selling "the System" to high schools, with Hoover HS his prime showing point.
There are HS teams all over that throw the ball quite a bit. Study these coaches and find out what makes them successful.

leach was with mumme from the start. leach is the brains behind it all. then hatcher was the qb at valdosta state adn qb coach at kentucky. tony franklin got in the mix at kentucky as the rb coach. franklin wrote a tell all book on the kentucky recruitng scandle and was sort of black balled for awhile. lets just say I do nto think he is on mummes christmas card list. Leach and hatcher left before the juicy stuff happened.

I've given a little thought to this, but at the same time I do not know these coaches personally (though I've met all of them) so I don't want to speak to character issues. Mumme appeared to be the driving force in these guys' ascendancy--going from Iowa Wesleyan to Valdosta St to big time D-1 football, but Mumme has never put together a string of winning teams (though he has always put up big passing numbers). On the other hand Hatcher has a title at Valdosta and several 10 win seasons (Mumme never went better than 8-4 I think), and Leach has won every season he's played with consistently less talent, and it was Leach that pirated the origins and nuts and bolts of the offense away from BYU. It also appears now that Hatcher and Leach are doing the innovating with the Airraid, and Mumme's teams are trying to copy it. At Kentucky Mumme started doing worse and worse as Leach and Hatcher left. Finally, Mumme has the major blemish at Kentucky that he, knowingly or recklessly, let his recruiting coordinator commit violations up and down the southeast. Even Guy Morriss, Mumme's offensive line coach at UK went on to have winning seasons as head cach (while on probation as a result of Mumme).
What to make of all this? I don't know. I don't mean to editorialize, and Mumme has a bigger name and impact in coaching than I do, but it does appear that Mumme's ambition drove that unit and the Airraid to the pinnacle of the coaching world, but Mumme himself has been marginalized while those other guys have continued for more and more success.
(Coaching rumors are funny--Leach is being discussed as a candidate at UM and Hatcher was being discussed as a possible OC at Florida St. Imagine if next year FSU and UM played and both were running the Airraid.)

Which one of them thought to go with the run and shoot pass protection he is the true genius being able to constantly get 5 in the route and constantly having time to through the football...Norm Chow was once quoted as saying if you are going to bring 8 we will block 8.... They didn't bring that philosophy from BYU....again who ever took the mouse davis idea's of the run and shoot pass protection and then blended them with the BYU routes that's the guy that deserves the credit for making the Airraid what it is today??? any one of you guys know who it was???

The one HS Air Raid program I have been around was actually very simple. They ran 5 formations, maybe 10-15 pass pattern concepts, an easy screen game (track and quick) and some Meyer's SG option. When they were running it (they were a pound -the-ball pistol team last year) they put up very good numbers all across the board (their QB had several 300 yard passing/ 100 yard running games) and were very competitive. They've started to evolve a little though; they were having a hard time chewing up the clock when they were up and also had quite a few turnovers. They installed the pistol two years ago (along with the Airt Raid) and were very tough to stop. Game planning against them when they were pure Air Raid was really, really tough. We basically had to flood the zones and wait for them to turn it over. When we had the ball, we had to be very aware of clock control; keep them off the field one 1st down at a time.

Leach must get credit for that. When those guys arrived at UK they were primarily a two-back 3-wide or even 2-back, 1 TE, 2 WR team with a lot of 7-man protection. Leach was always the big proponent of the four wide stuff.
When Leach got to Oklahoma they ran more 4-wide stuff than they did 2-back. This was in part enabled by the development of the shallow series which they got from the Denver Broncos. This series didn't really exist their first year at UK, but developed in 1998 and then henceforth. Leach then restructured the offense focusing primarily on shallow, mesh and smash, while Mumme had still focused on Y-cross, Y-sail, all-curl and mesh.
Then Leach went to TTech and continued with this, but did experience more protection problems with a lot of weakside blitzes. This is when the wide-splits developed, because Leach always put a big premium on putting maximum pressure on the defense, combined with the quick routes etc. Oklahoma gave them the most problems because of their zone blitzes they could get 4 rushers weak quite a bit, so they just widened the tackles so that many had to come from so far out.
It was about this time that the offense just exploded all over again. We saw an ebb and flow again with the bowl game last year and a few down games this year, as teams have found protection weaknesses in the wide-splits with inside pressure if you have athletes on the outside.

The HS team I described always had 1-2 replacement/hot routes in their package. They were always in the SG; if you started bringing tons of pressure (learned the hard way on this one) they'd maul you with these hot routes. If we manned up on them; they'd move their best WRs around and hit them on these hot routes. It sucks when a quick slant turns into a 70 yard TD score.

As Airman said....Rep, Rep, Rep. We ran it fairly successfully this year in high school. Threw for 2000 using this and empty sets. It is great, but you must get your QB to go through the progressions. To do that we used the noose, mesh, pat n' go drill everyday!!!!! We threw a lot of routes on air. Barrels and or dummies are critical for this weekly. This helped our QB's a lot working against the weekly defensive scheme we would see. The Mesh and Shallow packeage are awesome especially in certain places on the field! Hatcher's videos are simple but...excellent

Coach can you re post those playbooks
Also, anyone that runs Air Raid could you PM me I would like to talk to you about installing it at HS level.
I played for Rob Spence in college and am def going no huddle shot gun as I played in it in college and GAed for them after I graduated. i believe in the spread, but I am trying to learn more about Air Raid because I feel there passing scheme is simpler for HS kids.
