When I played in high school the coaching staff would publish a "newsletter" after winter weights and conditioning. In the newsletter was the head coach's synopsis of the season and a message to each class...Graduating Seniors, Upcoming Seniors, Upcoming Juniors, and Upcoming Sophomores. Then the defensive staff would present a break down on every player at each position of the defense (perhaps even addressing the potential of moving players to a different position next year). In the breakdown, each player had about a small paragraph devoted to them (addressing their areas of needed improvement and their strengths) and ordered in such a manner that the players were ranked as if in a depth chart. We were all addressed as candidates for the position. Nothing was ever guarenteed based on where you started the previous year. Obviously, the #1 candidates were the returning starters. Lastly, the lifting max's were published on everyone who came to winter weights. Everyone one on the team, or who wanted to be on the team, was given the newsletter. So everyone knew where everyone else stood. As a player, the newsletter was highly anticipated. After spring weights, the offense presented their evaluations. I plan on making one of these newsletters this year as I did previously at a another school.

That's a cool idea. If you have an example to look at, I'd greatly appreciate seeing it.

We do something similar except it gets handed out at the fall football awards. We give each player a bookeet that contains our weekly write ups from the Athletic Department along with the offensive and defensive stats. We also have the all-time top 10 for each category on offense and defense (our program is 9 years old so we have all of the stats). We also list the "projected" depth chart fro next year with strengths and challenges at each position. We often list 2 players for one position to create a built in challenge. It helps set the tone for Spring ball and allows us to see who really wants to play for us.
