In Missouri, everybody makes the playoffs after the 9-game regular season. Basically eight 8-team districts seeded in most classes. Largest schools have less teams in their districts.

I'm definitely older than dirt - I remember having "captain's practice" about two weeks before (actual) two-a-days and that was it. I do think we were in better shape than today's youth as we went outside more than this generation does. I remember the football coaches getting us jobs in the summer detasseling corn for the local farmers to get us acclimated to the heat/humidity.
I was a three-sport athlete and I've said before I don't know if I would have been in today's setup. The demands/requests that all sports coaches put on their athletes in their off-season has gotten out of hand. If you go to football camp the basketball coached is peeved if you miss a weekend tournament. If you play summer baseball the football coach is mad when you miss 7-on-7.
And I remember school and games starting after Labor Day and having eight-game seasons. After the eight games you were done. No playoffs and that was OK. The teams that were good knew it and the teams that were not as good knew it too.

Maybe we’ll do what NASCAR is doing go virtual football. Go Madden - and compete online with the teams on the schedule...

I cringe at the music the kids listen to in the locker room and bus. Lots of swear words. I’m not the head coach so it’s not my call and again I’m older than dirt - but n words and ho and mofo don’t seem appropriate...

I’ll bite - why is it ridiculous to have a signing ceremony to play D3 ball? I don’t understand the second part about the fifth offer. My guess is a coach called him five times and he finally decided to go there...

Our track kids do lift. The football coaches have their kids not out for spring sports in their own afternoon program 3x a week for about an hour.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is how it effects your interaction with the other sports’ coaching staffs. If you’re allowing kids to quit a sport and go directly to weightlifting you may not get support from the sports coaches. Example, I was an assistant football coach who was the head track coach. Another assistant football coach with the backing of the head coach, encouraged one of the track kids to quit and start weightlifting, I was peeved. The kid was not a superstar track athlete but I felt since he came out for track he should stuck with it. Plus, I thought track benefitted him as much as after school weightlifting did.

In Missouri schools with enrollments over 200 can’t have 8-man teams. Wondering what are the guidelines in other states.

A pet peeve of mind is when coaches blow the whistle on bad snaps whether in shot gun or punt/ field goal/pat. It might happen in the game - the kids need to learn what to do.

I think kickoffs will be gone fairly soon and I’m ok with that. I know it takes an exciting play out of the mix but getting rid of the full speed hits is a good thing.

I was an assistant for a coach that had his kids run a mile the opening day. If you ran a certain time you could be a skill player - if not you were a lineman. We had a 250 pounder state wrestler that was one of the fastest kids we had in a 20 yard dash. Would have been a stud fullback. Never got the chance - did college track as a thrower.
