My “one change” is all encompassing. Make the hs, college, and pro rules all the same. It would be so much simpler... ewwww having to use the nfl rules? that would stink of course I didn't say high schools should play by NFL rules. I said it would be good if all played by the same rules. Its make believe but there could be some giant consortium where the keenest minds on all levels could get together to set a common rulebook. Each head coach could get a vote !!! One for Belichek, one for Saban and one for the high school coach in mid-missouri...

As a head coach I usually had detailed practice plans. I learned that even if I didn't need them there were coaches on my staff that definitely needed or wanted them.

That must be tough. We still do Indy drills when we’re in the gym. Maybe less passing but receivers can still can do blocking and catching - just not as many routes with the limited space. Team passing is limited. We some times split the team and send a group to weightlifting/conditioning while the others can use the extra space in the gym. That being said, we didn’t have to work around basketball practices like I imagine you are doing at this time of the year.

I wouldn’t have enjoyed this, but a team in our area solved a similar problem by having the JH practice in the morning. The one JH coach was there and then the HS coaches would rotate days to help the JH. Small school that had problems getting coaches. They kind of liked it because they knew the JH team was learning the same skills and drills and schemes they would be using in HS

Crazy to add to this....our game field was redone this summer, and we didnt have a season yet. Soccer plays its first home game later today....The company who fixed our field did a great job, and promised they would come back and reset the corners. Our AD called and texted them continually over the last couple of months. Bottom line, they have not came back and set our corners on our new game field. Like I said, there hasnt been a game of any kind on it yet, soccer has first go at it today, we dont play until later this month. So I take my father in law and wife out there yesterday afternoon. My father in law has an engineers mind, is great at Math and figuring things out.....me not so much. Anyway, we find the middle of the field from goal post to goal post. We measure out to corners, we are trying to find the corners on the football field, so the soccer coach can use that to set the soccer field....he is using the the whole 3/4/5 rule and the pythagoreum therum, and it looks good.....we get what we thing is the 4 corners set, measure the width of the field.....perfect 160 feet..... measure the length of the first sideline and we are 10 inches too short. I just dont see how we could have gotten it any better. We were very careful... I am at a loss on what to do. cancel soccer

New Netflix series about youth football. I just got done binge watching it. Great program. So much better than Friday Night Tykes. I also watched that show but because it was a train wreck. An embarrassment to coaching. The Brooklyn Saints - two thumbs up - any darn day...

I’ve also seen teams while on offense had their sideline yell REVERSE when their team was running fake reverse. I assume this is bush league.
I think it’s interesting to say the clipping call is savvy if the kid does it , but not ok if the coach instructs it. Why wouldn’t the same apply to the OL coach that is teaching holding?

Ethics in coaching can be a tricky thing. I’m interested in your comments on four scenarios that I’ve experienced in my coaching career.
1. A coach calling timeout and inserting a skill player for a lineman. Then calling a pass play and sending out six receivers. If it was one time maybe it could have been a mistake - but it was done twice in a playoff game with completions each time. And the coach is hall-of-famer. Is knowingly breaking the rules unethical or is it just being competitive?
2. Similar scenario. I saw a junior coach always send in a 12th defender after the other team had scored. His rationale was that after a score there were a lot of things happening and the referees would often miss the infraction. However, obviously his own players knew they were doing something illegal.
3. Knew a defense that at times in the game would yell “fumble” after the snap. Often the offensive line would turn around and look for the ball. Unethical or just tricky coaching.
4. Last one, saw a team that taught their defenders - when the opponents broke away on a big play, to get in front of a blocker and stop thereby getting a clipping call. Is it any different than getting a charge call in basketball? Genius or unethical?
There are several other instances that to me at least have to be unethical. Playing/practicing players that are ineligible. In Missouri we had a top program have to cancel their season when they had an ineligible player use a different jersey to play in the game. That one is easy - and the coach rightfully got fired. But the not so easy ones listed above - what do you think?

update - we had our awards ceremony this weekend and it was great. We are a small school with 29 players but the ended up spending a ton on patches. We were champions in two conferences as well as district and state champions. That makes for a lot of patches as well as the state medal. And to the victors go the spoils so many of players received post season recognition at various levels. Rings to come in mid-February. Still can't wipe the smile from my face.
This was an awards presentation (not banquet because of covid) for football so I don't know when or how the band and cheerleaders will receive their awards.
Now comes the time to prepare for next season. We'll have a target on our backs but return six starters on offense and seven on defense. Excited to see what next year holds...

IMO - I would strongly disagree with those coaches thinking of having practice both before and after school. I would think that would burn out everybody pretty quick.
when I was an assistant basketball coach we did that one year before the season started. I hated it and more importantly the kids hated and eventually the parents hated it. Head coach said, in retrospect, that it was a bad idea.

We would sometimes have Thursday practice in the morning. It was a walkthrough and only lasted 45 minutes. Since it was already something different we would have it in front of the school. A different atmosphere - kids liked having the afternoon off and it gave the players an extra 8 hours to recover before Friday’s game.

OK, you guys have changed my mind. Everybody deserves a patch. Band, cheerleaders, administration, maintenance, all the fans and alumni, girlfriends of the players, coaches wives, girlfriends of the coaches, ticket takers, chain crew, ball boys, guys that live streams the game, group that lines the field, junior high coaches, little league coaches, store owners that put up signs, Culver's cuz that let the coaches eat free, sportswriters, oh yeah and the players that won the game too...

Thanks for your input - the kids were often the ones suggesting names and I know the ones who were introduced with the veteran (Dad, Mom, brother, grandfather) thought it was special. We got nothing but positive feedback.

interesting thoughts. One thing we did was introduce a veteran with a short bio each game. Often they would stand with their family and at times that would include a football player. Then we had all the veterans in the stands (from both sides) stand up to be acknowledged.
I hope the kids thought it was special.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Until I see the tuba player practicing in 99 degrees in August or the cheer coach lining the football field in December - I don’t see how they deserve State Championship patches... Why should everyone get awards? ‘Merica...

I realize I’m probably getting too old to stay in coaching. We won the schools first state championship this year. The football team is getting patches and rings. But amazingly to me, the band and cheerleaders are also getting state patches. I’m the only coach on the staff that thinks this is bizarre. I expect the cheerleading coach to help line the field and the band director to raise funds for Hudl assist to get us back to State. And “STAY OFF MY LAWN!!”

What stat book do you use? I've used Tucker's Grid Stat before and was OK with that. Now, our school is just keeping the stats that maxpreps uses but that doesn't really show the flow of the game. What do you use?

Get the neck masks? the longer ones that you can wear as a turtle neck. Kids can slide them up and down as needed. That would be my best guess I think the latest that has come out is you can't have the gaiters around your neck during play as it is liable to be pulled on like a horse collar. Have seen kids wear the gaiter with the bottom pulled up from the bottom back over the head. Kind of looks like ninja gear. I suppose the gaiter could be worn as shown if the mouth guard wasn't attached to the helmet. And yes, it will be one of several logistics concerns this season.

I found myself cheering for the coaches, players and teams in season 5. Not necessarily true in the first four seasons. But as another poster noted, there still is a LOT of swearing. Most high school coaches would lose their jobs if they swore that much.

I was hoping schools would have only half the students going to school every other day. Schools then would have a better chance of social distancing in classses. Have only seen one school doing that and that is just for the first couple of weeks of school. I really don’t think we can justify having football this fall.

******. I hadn’t thought of the race card being played by the kc/st. Louis districts. My first thought it was the suburb schools that were pushing for the change. Example when Blue Springs went virtual I thought the policy of not allowing all-virtual schools To play sports would change. It’ll be an interesting autumn. I can’t see how schools can preach social distancing during the school day and then allow football, basketball, wrestling at 3:30.
