How do you answer the question “Coach, how is the team going to be this year?” when you are out in town?
Do you have different answers for different groups of people (parent, youth league coaches, longtime fan, etc)?

Might as well tell them what they already believe:
"Same as always - good talent, poorly coached."
Will save time.

We're not very big, fast or strong but we have a lot of character.

I normally say something like, "We'll be okay, but man our schedule is tough!" whether either of those things are true or not.

I tell them we'll see. They figure out quickly that I don't want to talk about it.

Several possible responses 1)"Can't talk now, I have to go speak at a clinic" 2) "Well, we will be running 11 personnel, so we probably will be the best offensive team in the Nation" 3) "There is no universal terminology for pre-season predictions" 4) "Phuking have no clue, but I will coach football and I will teach math next year somewhere" 5) "Well, we will be running dbl tight double wing and the 46 gambler on defense, so we will probably be the best team in the country"

“The boys are working hard and growing as better Christian men everyday.” I work at a private Christian school so that answer is acceptable, and hopefully true.
Its been my stock answer for good years and bad ones

I usually try to be optimistic but also truthful in that you never really know until you start playing. Better to exceed public perception than fall short of the expectations you create by running your mouth. As coaches were at the mercy of our kids, and really they win the games by execution or talent.

I usually say that about 1/2 are doing the proper strength training and if we get all the kids to play who should, we'll be good. If not, we'll be average. Usually covers it.

Always depended on who it was.
Someone with a brain and realism- I'd tell them what I thought.
Random fan or mom or someone just trying g to chit chat- I don't know, it depends on how quickly we catch on to stuff.
Ahole super fan that was always a dickhead on Friday night- I don't know. You tell me and we'll see if we can live up to it.
The crazy part about the last one is, those guys are usually so dense/not listening to you anyways, they never understand you're basically telling them to {censored} off to their face

When coaching Student Athletes I always responded with; Our expectation is to finish with a perfect graduation record.
Not coaching student athletes; We should be competitive - there's some tough teams and the bad teams of last year have gotten a lot better.
