I know the "Jimmy's and Joe's" saying but was wondering what you've found made your program successful beyond the players and scheme?

dcohio got it right.
The school I had been at didn't have those things he mentioned, as a coach it was hard for me to understand that because I played at the same school and we were discplined, we knew football, hell I could tell you what all 11 positions were doing on both offense and defense from my freshman year to senior year, and character well they didn't have it to much.
Another thing is work ethic, if the kids see the coaches be hard workers most of the time it trickles down to the players working hard.

I would say more important than your X's or Jimmies is your discipline and character.
Tony Dungy said in his book Quiet Strength that he told his team their goal was to win a Super Bowl, but if that was all they accomplished, they had very shallow priorities.
That's why you never hear about Coach Dungy blowing up at halftime or after a game or during a press conference or practice.
The one time in his book he admitted he blew up?:
He was at Tampa Bay, who was in a late season slump, and before the team meeting, he hears about two incidents involving his players.......
......was it drugs? was it a DUI? Nightclub brawl?
no, one of his players was 30 minutes late for an appearance at a car dealership, and the other blew off reading to a 4th grade classroom for the second time. The teacher wrote Dungy a letter, telling him how disappointed the kids were.
He hit the ROOF.
He said that entire meeting, he didn't talk about scheme or strategy, he just wailed on responsibility.
The point: talent and scheme are functions of what happens on the field..........and what happens on the field (while it is the most emphasized part by outsiders) is only a small part of the program.
There are those teams that have great coaches and great players and care only about winning.......but I would say they are not very successful.
Funny thing is, stress the "little" things first: responsibility, teamwork, character, hardwork, discipline------and the wins will take care of themselves
THAT, imo, is how one runs a sucessful program
Do the right things the right way for the right reasons the first time every time for all time
