"Family situation makes moving tough....."
This is number 1.
Work out a solution that doesn't mess with the family, and if the only solution is stay, then stay.

Honestly this is kinda gross. If I’m walking off the field, I don’t want to inhale syrup that came from some sweaty ass bottle on a hot September day Guessing you were not a lineman......cuz there ain't a bad time for syrup

When I was in school we called them roach blocks (think about a roach on its back that can’t flip over). Think anybody has a version of that to celebrate? Not in a manner that complies with our athletic handbook.....

Maybe I take this for granted, but one of the BEST parts of coaching is the fraternity of our staff. Now, we've been together since 2007, so maybe that has something to do with it. We've had awesome teams, average teams, and teams that won 3 games, but through it all, it is really enjoyable to have guys who share the same values, set their egos aside, really care about the kids, and sacrifice for football. I could not imagine a staff where we didn't hang out after games until 2 am, get together in the offseason for meetings/chill time, yell at officials at basketball games, EPIC clinic adventures, etc........ It just wouldn't be as fun. So many of the guys I played with in college are coordinators (even HC's) now, but the situation is sooooo good where I am at, I have no problem coaching DT's and OL for the next 3 decades. So my question is: Is it rare to have such a strong bond with the guys I coach with? If everyone has invested the same sweat equity into it the bond is strong. If they haven't the bond doesn't become as strong. There's 5 guys on our staff I'm really close with 4 I'm not. the 5 are the workers, the film watchers, the doers, the coachers. The 4 are just there stealing a check. I can't imagine doing this for the money

One of the biggest weaknesses in coaching I've seen is not teaching kids to finish - follow-thru in blocking or wrap-up and either hold BC or drive him sideways or back. Got to teach second-effort and finish regardless of whether you're doing "Thud" or "Full," even in Individual, Group, Team. Agree with this....and, I think it is better taught in a non-full speed environment. You can teach those things without pads

Seriously though, this is the inherently nastiest group I’ve ever coached......we never work on the finish on our block progression because they are always to the whistle or the ground.
Can’t get them to turn it off....not sure I want to.....
Like I said, surrounded by @$$holes

We try to, especially versus scout. Our defense does a good job of not teeing off on the ball carrier, keeping him off the ground etc. Offense is another story.....our line reminds me of that famous line from Spaceballs..... I see your Schwartz is as big as mine? I’m surrounded by.....

The 10-1 vote, with one abstention, followed a 19-0 decision by the association’s Tournament Management Committee in March to use NFHS rules for all eligible sports, eliminating any inconsistencies — and risk of possible litigation.Sounds like it was this TMC that made the change and forced Mass to adopt the Fed. Any idea on the why? The last line seems to make it sound like CYA for the state. Maybe thinking 48 other states do it one way and that could put them in a situation if a player was injured with a rule that differs between NFHS and NCAA in a negligible position. That could be.....I actually think ncaa rules around cutting make the game safer.......it is inconsistency in the FBZ that leads to injuries

To lose 10-15 pounds each fall. You lose weight during season? I'm always battling to keep it off between coaches' meetings and post games

Yes. There are tons of HS football coach groupies out there. They love guys who spend all their time worrying about how they’re going to block a squeezing 4 technique and get paid pennies!!! Actually, how many overweight football coaches end up with wives that are out of their league? Speaking from experience.

wiscoach Do you typically let kids come out late i.e. after practice has started? If this kid was a 5-9 WR who runs 5.0 would you let him on the team? We typically let freshmen and sophomores come out, get excited about football, and then slowly tighten the "accountability" screws. If this kid was a senior, we would let him come out, but he would know scout team should be his expectation....nothing more.

Guess I am in the minority here.....if on practice #1 I have zero players who can cover this kid on a fade ball, he is the starter.
If he is a cancer, then that’s one thing, and you deal with it.
But if he comes out and works hard (ish) and is s good teammate, then F it.
I think sometimes we as coaches convince ourselves that we are hard asses for the kids sake, when it is really our own ego fueling it.
Guess what? This is real life! Sometimes you bust you butt, do everything right, and you still end up losing.
BTW, I would slowly introduce this cat to defense.....start off showing him videos of Calvin Johnson playing defense in Hail Mary situations......then let him practice that and get a taste for interceptions. Slowly build him toward defense.

I'm on Episode 4. I've been yelled at on the field before. Didn't bother me. There's a lot of emotion and immediacy so it happens. If a header ever MF'd me on the field like that there would have been a chance for a fist fight on the field. I was actually watching this with my HC, and looked at him and said: “Just so you know, that would be an instant fist fight”

After a loss, everyone wants to split asap.

I have said this for years about high school. Cut on snap only inside the box. Easier to see and enforce and probably safer. Does away with ball in box or not. Does away with under center or shotgun. Just simplier. That "Shotgun" thing seems to vary state to state. In Virginia they specifically told us that it didn't matter. That is crazy imo......

I might be a little sensitive.
We have officials miss chops all the time and one year lost an all state DT because of it.

Hanging out in the rules thread got me thinking about the future of the game.......
I have heard rumors that the way Federation does the Free Blocking Zone and all the different iterations of legal and illegal blocks, coupled with the lower number of officials (losing experience, etc.) that the Federation may make all forms of cut blocking illegal.
Before someone goes all "Cry-baby millennials ruining the game" on me, consider that the FBZ and it's rules make it really difficult to interpret what is and isn't legal (in real time), while also looking for holding, etc.
NCAA rules are much clearer......I would prefer to either adopt those, or get rid of cutting all together.
