Nobody likes being badmouthed publicly or privately, but IMHO, nothing good can possibly come from dismissing a kid from your team because his parents are a-holes. I don't know what level you coach at, but assuming it's high school or middle school, if you do do that, and then the parent runs to the Principal/AD/Superintendent, and all you have to defend your actions are that the kid's parents were badmouthing you, you're going to come off as petty and vindictive to your superiors.

In New Jersey, the requirements are that you have 60 college credits and a county sub license, and obviously finger printing and a criminal background check. In addition, just about every district requires coaches have a First Aid/CPR training every two years, and some require you take an online course on bullying/harassment, heat acclimization, and concussion awareness.
Because most public school staffs in New Jersey are a mixture of district and nondistrict employees, when it comes to stipends, the district employees get priority. That usually leads to stipend splitting and using booster club money to compensate the rest of the staff.

As this is my main responsibility on our staff, we accumulate a lot of film during the season, through the regular trafing process and by trading stuff to teams we don't play in order to get films of our other opponents. Typically, I will get started on the upcoming opponent on Wednesday evening. When we meet Saturday morning, depending on what we have on our opponent before we exchange via Hudl, I will have anywhere from 1 to 3 films already tagged and broken down. And being married without kids, I work on whatever we get on Saturday and Sunday evening.

A few more to add to the list:
* Coaches who make up their mind that a kid "sucks" or "will never play for us" after one practice, because they aren't a star on the freshman team or JV team, or because their older brother wasn't any good at football.
* A varsity head coach who bitches and moans about the freshmen screwing up his practice, and yells at you (the freshman coach) to take them somewhere, anywhere, away from his drills, but then wants to be on the sideline calling the shots during freshman games.
* An AD or bus scheduler who either doesn't/forgets to schedule buses for your game or doesn't schedule enough buses for a game.
* When you tell your kids a million times what color jersey you're wearing for the game, and somebody still shows up with the wrong colored jersey.
* When you have a road game and everybody gets off the bus, and nobody grabs any of the stuff that has to come out to the field.

The past three years we've brought in Marines from the local USMC Recruiting Station and they give a Leadership Seminar and a Physical Fitness/Team Building activity on the first offcial day of practice in August.

We usually use a format like this:
First Scrimmage Ones 10 plays- Team A Offense vs. Team B Defense 10 plays- Team B Offense vs Team A Defense
Twos 10 plays- Team A Offense vs. Team B Defense 10 plays- Team B Offense vs Team A Defense
Ones 10 plays- Team A Offense vs. Team B Defense 10 plays- Team B Offense vs Team A Defense
Twos 5 plays- Team A Offense vs. Team B Defense 5 plays- Team B Offense vs Team A Defense
Down and Distance Each team gets 2-3 series, starting from the -30, get a 1st Down the chains keep moving, turnover or turnover on downs and the other team starts from their -30.
Second scrimmage follows the same format, except that the ones get three sets of 10 plays instead of two. Third scrimmage is a game scrimmage (3 quarters varsity, 1 quarter JV)

Inspired by my thread about what makes you a rage in our game, and the funny things we see in the classroom thread, what makes you rage in the classroom? I'm an instructional aide in an alternative school, so a lot of the gripes that have been expressed in this thread I see tenfold on a daily basis. Our "school" and I use that term loosely, is a portrait of dysfunction for a multitude of reasons: 1) Spineless administration that enables the kids' bad behavior: a) I was the acting math teacher for the first two months of the school year until they found a suitable replacement. Since it as "my classroom" I drafted the rules for my class, one of which was no eating or drinking. Kid comes in the day after we went over the rules with breakfast from McDonald's because he showed up to school at 10:00. I told him he couldn't eat in my room, he got loud and disrespectful, I sent him out and wrote him up. I get called into the office at the end of the day and am told that the no food and drink rule is unreasonable and I have to change it. b) The same kid from the above comes to school high at least once a week (when he bothers to show up) and when the bus aide filed a report for him reeking of weed, our educational supervisor gets upset that he filed the paperwork. This same kid also sold a bag of weed to another student and not only wasn't suspended, the cops weren't even called (so much for "Drug Free School Zones). c) School rules that change on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis. d) Once last year, the old math teacher I worked with sent two POS' out of the room because they were loud and obnoxious and they wouldn't stop. They go and tell the supervisor and principal that he had called them the N word, and rather than ask him what happened, they accused him of calling them the N word. This in spite of the fact the we have cameras in our classroom and they could have reviewed the film and heard that he never said it. e) I was attacked (bitten on the wrist, actually) by a student this year, and true to form, our supervisor blamed the teacher I worked with rather than the student who bit me.

Here's a question: Did Dunbar need the ineligible player in order to win the game? If the player didn't affect the outcome of the game, then the coach is as much to blame as the administrators. Why jeopardize your integrity, your season, and possibly your livelihood over one player?

Yes, they were easy. Use PVC cement to make certain sections permanent but not all at once so it disassembles into flatpack pieces. Fill the feet sand and use a cap on one end and spray foam on the other. Thank you.

Sorry to repeat some of the same things that have already been said, but:
* The guys who tell you that offenses like the wing t, single wing, and double wing are outdated or youth league offenses and that you can't win at the high school level with them.
* Kids who walk around 10 mins before you go on the field and they're wearing their jersey, then they're the last guy on the field because they have to put the jersey on their shoulder pads when it could have been done an hour ago.
* Coaches who don't know the schemes you run, don't bother to try to learn it, but are the first to start spitballing "why don't we run this, or why don't we run that" at coaches meetings.
* AD's who are more interested in appeasing pain in the ass parents rather than doing their job and trying to find out what actually is going on.
* Kids who constantly lose equipment- knee pads, thigh pads, practice jersey, and so forth.
* Kids who show up for the day before the game walk through in non-team colored shorts and t shirts.
* Parents who know for months that a physical is required to be able to participate, and then on the first day of practice, their kid doesn't have a physical.
* The parents that schedule family vacations during preseason camp, then wonder why their son isn't allowed to play in the first scrimmage or why they are on the 2nd team when the second scrimmage rolls around.
* Winter and spring sports coaches who tell their kids not to lift-when many of those kids also play football.
* "Open Gym" during the summer and fall.

How does your Sunday or Weekend Staff Meetings Go??? For us.. 2pm - I am the HC (1st thing we do is injury report from ATC, I give out practice schedule for the week done mostly online but we discuss) 2:20 pm - Each staff member has to have a POTW nomination 4 clips on HUDL (that's my way of knowing they watch film, I may have them turn in grades this year but hasn't been an issue) then we vote as a staff 2:35 pm - STC goes over last week film and opponents, what he wants to do this week... 2:50 pm - Staff Prayer for Dinner 3:00 pm - Offensive & Defensive Staff Break For Game plan until... I am the OC but we script Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on offense, I go over to get the defensive game planning while the O guys are putting the finishing touches on the script, we are done around 7 - 7:30 ish..... I've been a part of staffs that met on Sunday, and Saturday's. The schools that I've coached at that met on Sunday's were schools that didn't have lights and we played on Saturday's. The first school was coaches only from 8am to 1230pm, watching our game film and getting a start on our opponent's film. Kid's came in at 4:30 to lift and we would do a 45 minute walk through. After the kids left, coaches would stay and watch more film, and usually leave around 8:30 or 9. We wasted a lot of time and could have gotten things done a lot quicker if not for that. The second Sunday meeting school was coaches only Sunday night at 6:30 for dinner, quick review of our film, then getting started on the upcoming opponent. The last two schools I've coached at, with the same head coach, we meet on Saturday's at 7:30 to watch our game. Kids come in at 9:00, see the trainer, light lift and run, watch the film, get briefed on our opponent, and they are out by 11:30 or 12:00. We usually stay until 12:30 to go over some stuff for our upcoming opponent, then we are done. In my role as director of scouting, I usually have at least one, sometimes two of our opponent's films already broken down for the coordinators so they have something to work with. Over the weekend I cut up whatever our opponent sends us so when we have our formal meeting Monday night, we're ready to go.

What do you consider must haves for Game day. Looking at building a proper check list. Seems something is always missing. I am talking coaches not athletes. Will always have athletes show up without pants or missing a helmet. What Have other coaches found essential for Game day. I think it would be a good idea to bring a few extra game jerseys, skill players and lineman numbers. A few years ago we had a player whose jersey got ripped from the v neck collar almost all the way down to the waist, he came off, got a new jersey on him and he only missed a few plays. It would also come in handy if a player were to get a large amount of blood on him.

In New Jersey, public and private schools are separated for playoff purposes. During the regular season private schools and public schools compete against each other, but because of the gulf between privates and publics those meetings are becoming rarer. The exception is in North Jersey where the five dominant private schools (Paramus Catholic, St. Joseph of Montvale, Don Bosco Prep, St. Peter's Prep, and Bergen Catholic) are in there own division and their non-league games are against out of state competition or against the mid-size private schools in North Jersey.

Saw this and got me thinking, how many of you guys here put in similar hours per week? How big is the disparity between HC and a position assistant coach? If yes, What state? Big or small HS? (Trying to see if it even matters) If no, What is your Role and how many hours do you think you put in per week? Example: Assistant - hours put in per week? Get back coach - 3 hours put in per week (yell at players to get back during friday night, etc) Position Coach (WR) and scouting coordinator ( a fancy title for doing ODK and breaking down film) at large school (Group 4 of 5 groups) in Southern New Jersey. Thid past season I spent about 40-45 hrs per week on all football related activities (practice, coaches meetings, varsity and jv games, breaking down film). I'm married with no kids and my wife is a "football widow", so the balance between work and family isn't as pronounced for me.

We're a school of around 1,400, Group 4 (out of 5 Groups), second largest football classification in New Jersey.
I'd say around half of our guys play other sports. In the winter, it's mostly wrestling with a few guys that play basketball. We have more multi-sport athletes in the spring, we have quite a few lacrosse and baseball players, then track and at least one guy who does crew.

As long as I can get some team swag like a cap, t shirts, and maybe a hoodie then I'm sold. By cap, you mean specifically a "hat," right? Not a euphemism for visor? We dont have use for visor-wearers on our staff. I just dont want anything to be awkward when you get here #hat #notavisor #drinkbudweiser #grind #allday #hotdogparty #bringsyrup I'm balding up top, probably from wearing a baseball cap too much, so I have no use for a visor either.

When I was just starting out in coaching, we would as a staff go to watch an opponent whenever we had the chance, and even though we were going to get the film when we did the exchange, our head coach always wanted us to film. Being the youngest guy on the staff, I was always assigned to do the filming. One day we went to film our opening opponent on a Saturday afternoon game. It just so happens that a very attractive female meteorologist from the local ABC affiliate was at the game. One of the other assistants pointed her out to me so I made sure in between plays I got plenty of good zoomed in shots of her, including her chest and her other "assets." The team watched the film the following Monday, and when I got to practice, the Head Coach told me "You're never filming another game for me again, we'll just wait for their copy when we trade. One minute I'm watching their offense and the next thing you know (female meterologist's) tits and ass are splashed across the screen." Sounds like a win, then. Yeah, it certainty was.

I coach in a state that doesn't allow for Spring Football. I wanted to know, for you guys that do have it, how do you manage to do it with your multi-sport athletes? What time frame (what month or months) does it cover?

I have no desire to be a head coach. After seeing what being a head coach did physically and emotionally to two of my closest friends I soured on that idea. In 17 years I've gone from the bottom up to offensive coordinator for parts of two seasons, and back down to freshman and part time varsity this year. My goal is to make it back to being an offensive coordinator again.

Hello gentleman,
I'm a high school assistant coach in Southern New Jersey, this upcoming fall will be my 18th season. My coaching assignment for the upcoming season will be assistant freshman coach (receivers on offense, defensive position TBA), and for the varsity I will be Director of Scouting and I will be handling the HUDL sideline apparatus.
