Hey Coaches,
I have taken a TON of notes, snippets of information that I thought was good from this forum, pretty much whenever I see something good online I take it.
I am going to organize this information and group them into Offense, Defense, technique stuff, positional, etc.
I was just going to do good ol' Word, Excel, or PowerPoint but was wondering if any of you have guys have anything else out there that is more efficient.
Or if you have any tips on how to go about it, I'm all ears!

I've also had a head coach tell the staff, if you can get everything we need done from home, stay home , just come help to laundry and clean Fieidhouse and leave. BUT your crap better be ready to go when we meet Sunday to finalize the game plan. Or it's your tail end. On another note, where I am at now, there is so much wasted time, before practice, during practice, hell just during the day. It's like nothing I've ever been apart of. Myself and the other assistant have tried to get the header to change but he only does when he high school coaches come down and tell him to. For get the fact that myself and the assistant have high school head coaching and coordinator experience , and this guy doesn't, he won't listen. One reason why I'm looking to move on. Not what I was lead to believe it was. It's my fault for not investigating the job more. What originally lead you to the place? And what are some concrete things you could have done to "investigate more" without tipping them off that you're investigating? if that makes sense lol

33coach when you said soon to be Central Section, I take it as the central valley which is where I'm at. So we're probably not too close lol huddlehut I get what you're saying, but I really do enjoy/love and have passion for what is a "game" at the end of the day. It would be like never having to work a day in your life, I really do enjoy it that much. Being a young unmarried guy, What I can't predict/expect is what happens when a family comes into the picture and how does that affect things. I spend a lot of "time" thinking/daydreaming about football, I do other things (travel, being active) but then it eventually comes back around to something football related. It is not the game of football per se, but the relationships you build with the kids and the lessons you teach, that's what I preach and truly enjoy. Also seeing a perfectly executed Triple Option Pitch off of a #2 defender that goes to the house also makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. The entire Central coast (Pac 7 & Los Padres league) is moving to the central section. Paso Robles, Atascadero, San Luis, Santa Maria.. I heard this is happening in 2018? Awesome, can't wait for some new faces! Lots of good football being played here (and bad ones) from the small towns to the bigger schools! Coaches in Texas, if you get fired, does it usually mean your whole staff is packing too or it depends?

Lots of wasted time, fellas! One day you're gonna retire and realize it. I did the same thing that you all are doing... thinking that you will outwork everyone. Can't get those years back, boys! I may not get the years back...but, in the State of Texas...where a large majority of the communities live and die by Friday nights...you better be working and you better win or you won't have a job. The pressure is TREMENDOUS to win...just like Coach Vint said. I'm not saying Texas HS football is better. I know there is great football in almost every state. What I am saying is the commitment and the investment from the Community is incredible. We coach in better stadiums than a lot of Universities at the FCS and D2 level play in. I currently work at a school that has a stadium that seats 18k with artificial turf and we have an indoor facility. Our practice fields have turf outside. We just passed a bond to build us a new 8,000 square foot weight room. We have to win. It's a 'win at all costs' mentality. It may be wrong...but, it's the truth. It is what it is. When I left the college level...I worked in a 4a level school (3a back then - 900 students)...pop of the town was around 12,000 people. We came in at 6 am on Sunday mornings to work...we broke for church at 10 am and came back at 2 pm. We had to leave vehicles in the parking lot (instructed by the AD/HC) so people would drive by and think we were still working. If we did not...they would call the principal and the Supt. Not kidding. For you and other coaches who coach in Texas or in places where the pressure is TREMENDOUS to win (and you lose your job and all assistants with it); at least at the big time colleges, these coaches have millions to rely on as they walk out the door. I just don't understand how you do the same on what is a teacher's salary? What are your options if you were to get fired? Does this also mean you never purchase a home because you don't know when your time may be up? Or does the good ol alumni booster club do a lot of 'fundraising' on the side? (don't answer this question! )

GA 13 days to have 10 practices. Padded and No padded any time with a ball counts. Spring Game. It depends on how good ur track team, baseball and soccer team is. Could start in feb have until last day of school 2 be done. Our track team is the depending state champs, so my QB, star DB and others will miss the 1st 5 practices most likely. Good problem to have!

I'm a varsity assistant and special teams coordinator at a school of about 600. I will count teaching time in my schedule as I do have time to watch film during the school day more often than not. During the season, my workday is essentially 7 a.m.-7p.m. Monday through Thursday and then 7 a.m. to midnight on Friday nights as all of our games are on Fridays here in Iowa. We do not formally meet as a staff on Saturdays but depending on opponent, I'll watch anywhere between 2 and 5 hours of film on my own and then we meet as a staff for 2-3 hours on Sunday. So, I guess that adds up to roughly 70 hours, depending on the Saturday load. ' I am a single guy with no family, but at the risk of sounding like a softie, I'm not a "grinder." I genuinely hate film study although obviously regard it as a necessity. I pretty much have to be done with football activities at 7 on weeknights and try to do very little Sunday afternoon. I've noticed I really need those mental break times. Follow-up question, how much effect do you think working these hours have in relations to you being single with no family? In other words, do you think it hinders your chances of starting up a family? I understand that you may not want a family at the moment by choice, but if you ever did want one, would these kind of hours be negatively affecting the chances of that from happening? Other coaches feel free to chime in, although this was a "general" post, I asked because for me, there is definitely a deeper meaning behind it for me.

Don't want to completely change the topic but didn't want to start a totally different thread either and my question seems to be somewhat related to the topic. My wife is wondering if there are any kind of Huey-like blogs for coaches wives. Do you guys know of anything like this? Yes, it goes by a peculiar name Facebook. Strange I know!

Saw this and got me thinking, how many of you guys here put in similar hours per week? How big is the disparity between HC and a position assistant coach?
If yes,
What state? Big or small HS? (Trying to see if it even matters)
If no,
What is your Role and how many hours do you think you put in per week?
Example:
Assistant - hours put in per week? Get back coach - 3 hours put in per week (yell at players to get back during friday night, etc)

I think player's appreciate things being scored (when possible) because they want a clear cut winner or loser. Especially those guys that are on the bubble of being a 1 or 2. Scores aren't subjective. The score forces everyone to recognize the outcome. This reminds me of a cheer competition I had to go watch, (gf is a coach and wanted me to record) her team literally was the last one to "perform" and by then, I'm pretty sure judges were mentally exhausted by then after numerous routines (pretty big disadvantage) I left the place thinking "Where's the defense?" No defense = not a real sport!

Here's what I try to do
I think every drill and every down can be a competition if the environment is created by the coaches i.e., hyping it up (my guys versus your guys, O vs D, OL vs DL, etc.). In other words, its not like coaches say "Ok this drill involves no competition, don't try your hardest!"
Think of kids prior into getting into a schoolyard fight. Other kids "hype" up the fight (so and so is going to fight at lunch) and it creates anticipation, excitement, suspense. Of course the fight hardly lives up to expectation but pre-fight, everyone wants to see it.
Real life example, Pacquiao and Mayweather, $100 million generated by promoters saying my guy is going to kick your guys ass etc.
I think coaches can utilize the same promoter-like mentality and really get kids competing every drill and every down! Of course this would mean I couldn't just wear my visor and keep my whistle in my mouth, I'd actually have to coach lol

This guy. No desire to ever be a HC. Now I'm also in a position where my best friend since we were 4 is the HC and we have been coaching together since 2005. I'm the OL and DC with free reign on defense and make our half time adjustments on O as well. Also call lots of plays on game day, HC is the main shot caller but will run whatever a couple other guys call during the game. Our staff for the most part has also been together this whole time as well so everyone knows their role. So basically I have a lot of juice in my current position without the added craziness of being a HC. So again no I have no desire to ever be a HC. Typing this I relaize I don't know if I could be an assistant for any other HC, just have to much power now and I don't know if I could be just a regular assistant anymore. Seems like you have it made. It's like being HC without the title and all the unnecessary drama lol. Pretty sure 99% of us don't coach with someone we've known since we were 4! All I can say is Enjoy it!

For what it's worth, I'm relatively new to coaching, I had aspirations to be HC at high school some day but the more I learn (especially from this board) the more I feel coordinator position is more so for me, mainly because I have a "natural" knack and interest in strategy long before football. In other words, not so much interested anymore

A lot of coaches on here have been apart of terrible programs, we do know what you have seen for 8 years. I was at THIS SCHOOL for 1 or 2 of these 8 and this guy isn't painting the community he's hoping to help in a very good light. I was there during their affiliation with the better of the 2 Conferences that they've recently been a part of. I'm not going to air a ton of dirty laundry about that place, but I will say that the glory years of the program had more to do with the studs walking the halls than anything else. So it's been confirmed that the success wasn't due to the Wing-T!?!? Hope they have a 30-day money back guarantee on these books I ordered!!! jk

Someone once told me never to judge until you've been in their shoes (or role) This scenario kind of reminds me of the whole Dallas PD sniper situation, in response to the protests and when questioned what advice he would give to black men, "Get off that protest line and put an application in, and we'll put you in your neighborhood, and we will help you resolve some of the problems you're protesting about" Here's the link to the above story: www.nydailynews.com/news/national/dallas-police-chief-protesters-hiring-article-1.2707704

I'm waiting for the app to come out where parents, administrators, and booster club members can chime in on the next play call. It will be in real-time as well so the coach can get instant feedback, this will allow him to appease all stakeholders involved before calling the next play so that he cannot be the sole reason the team lost! Think about coaches, we can never be blamed again! This may be the next big thing in coaching, should I patent it? On a serious note, when coachd5085 speaks, I listen

Look on the bright side, someone has to be THAT team, you know, the team that everyone looks on the schedule and marks it up as a "W", not everyone can win! When you embrace your role, less stress! Kind of reminds me of this scene from Superbad
(The following post was made for entertainment value, always consult your physician before taking any advice especially from a football board)

I sometimes (more like all the time) get into these philosophical thinking about life in general. I am curious why do you share your knowledge of football, life, (insert whatever here) on a forum or any place. I am 99.99% sure everything I know I have learned from someone else. The only reason I don't put 100% is because maybe, just maybe there is a 0.01% chance that I picked up something on my own lol. So, 3-part question: - Why do you share your knowledge of football?
- Do you not fear that the sharing of your knowledge whether it be scheme, technique, film, etc. will be used against you and potentially defeat you?
- When do you determine that you have enough knowledge to; Write a book, speak at a clinic, present on a webinar (like coach smith is currently doing)?

Haven't read the book but for me, its similar to teaching, I would start with the objectives I would like to have achieved by the end of that practice. At the end of practice, I would decide how close we got to our objectives or if we exceeded our objectives (which is rare). Then I would reflect and see how we can get better and what direction to go from there.
Objectives would be multiple and include things such as
1. Fundamentals 2. Techniques 3. Conditioning 4. Scheme install (O, D, & ST) 5. Sufficient & Quality Reps etc.
I would also take a look in the stickied thread called "Best Practice Ideas"

Same exact reason why YOUTHs should not specialize and play in a year round sport but parents do it anyways because Little Johnny is going to turn pro and fall behind his peers if he doesn't

What are those things called when you actively post from time to time to update progress like month to month or year to year? I would be interested in reading and seeing how things work out for you as time goes by. Rooting for you bud!

My list? Andrew Coverdale, Dan Robinson, Dub Maddox, Gunter Brewer and Bob Stitt. I find that the best minds come from OUR level. I respect the hell out of coaches at the other level as well....but I've sat in college rooms and the discussions that I've had with these guys trumps a lot HOT coaches. Agree 100%. I have been breaking down college All 22 to learn. Several schools do things that apply to what I do, but this year am committing to just looking at offense and defense from high schools. There are some brilliant guys at our level. Jim Harbaugh talked at his clinic about how he loves to pull guys from our ranks because there are some great minds. Greatest mind I have ever encountered is Greg Baur at Macomb Dakota here in Michigan. He won't talk to outsiders (I learned some from him when I coached with him), but the guy knows his chit defensively. Joe DuPaix is a guy I coached with in Utah. He is at Southern Virginia now (Division 3) and knows the flexbone as well as anybody. How do you get ahold of the college all-22 film? I know you can pay for NFL all-22. Same Service?

You are a Flexbone Enthusiast, You run Flexbone, your screen name has to do with the Flexbone, and you have an opportunity to watch one of the FBS Academy teams live in action this weekend:
1) Do you attend? 2) If Yes, Do you go, sit back, enjoy yourself "Be a Fan" and watch the beauty of the Triple Option. Or do you go with your coaching hat on and try to watch the nuances of the Offense and learn something?
thoughts?
