I was told this past year by an opposing player to stop even trying to coach my DB because he couldn’t ***** guard him
Off topic but funny story (he had one big catch but nothing otherwise, and wasn’t on that DB)
On topic: I ain’t gonna encourage it but if the kid is doing it and it’s not getting us a penalty, Then we likely aren’t gonna notice it

I have great experience in this situation. I played at one school. Coached that schools MS team for 2 years. New HS staff. Nobody I was familiar with. I wanted to coach high school ball, they wanted me at the MS level. A former assistant coach of mine and I had connected on this forum actually and he got the job at his Alma mater, my high schools rival. I have lost relationships with some people because of it. Had my in-laws house egged actually (used to live with them). Most understood I took a promotion. Some didn’t care. My family still is in the feeder system of that school, some family have played for me here. Some people here have been hesitant to accept me because of where I came from- and I came in guns blazing and bitter against that school. Its faded since, but I’ve contributed more to this schools football than I ever did the previous one. Previous school offered me a position this year. Turned them down. Only way I’d make that move is for a coordinator role. I definitely had a chip on my shoulder. But you’ll be fine. Some people might get upset but it’s HS football ultimately. Egged the house over that? The fk is wrong with folks? I was upset at first and then I realized it was my mother-in-law’s house and got jealous of them doing it

I was interested in scheme in high school. Actually, I was interested in looking at playbooks. I found playbooks online and thought I was the coolest.
I decided to be a coach after watching the Friday Night Lights TV show for some reason lol

Significantly too much
Idk the size of your school, but for us we are a school that has to share our athletes. Spring ball is for the OL for us.

canesfan has a good template. We ask them about their strengths and their weaknesses. How they rate themselves in different areas (weight room, practice, classroom, etc). Anything they’d want to recommend we do to make things better. Things that they like about how we practice. They have an individual and a team goal. We don’t let them do anything with numbers really in that regard. Then the coaches straight up tell them what we thought about them in the previous season and what they need to do to get better. Brutal honesty. I think they’re really helpful, the kids who are bought in have really benefited from them. Even with Covid this year, most of our kids have met their goals or became better at what we asked of them. I told our QB in his meeting that he received very few votes for team captain as a junior and he needed to step up as a leader, and he’s without a doubt our undisputed leader of our team this year.

Nothing beats leather coaching shoes. They look awful but they are a lifesaver in the cold/rain. You’re old enough now to pull off those shoes

Our field is eventually a pig sty by the end of the season. I wore muck boots during games, best decision ever.
I wore cleats to do some on the field work with my brother this spring and I really have considered making that a permanent practice option.

In the past 2 seasons I have been in school and worked a weekend job as a front desk clerk, so Saturday and Sunday mornings I would watch film from like 7-3 and throughout the week at random times.
Have a teaching job now and a baby due any second so I'm going to figure out some sort of schedule. I have a computer I hook up to my TV in my office and I am going to use the two screen feature a lot for when I'm inputting data, but I also can just watch it on my laptop or iPad. Will probably be able to watch periodically during school.
As a staff we watch film on Sunday. Previous game and opponents scout footage. Do we need to? Probably not, but it's good to come together and air stuff out face to face. Also some of the not as serious guys it'll be the only film they watch all week.

Our kids did at home workouts (hit or miss how many did them) for essentially 3 months and came back and were significantly faster than they were during June of 2019. We were young skill wise but I was worried.
Offensively the best thing this has allowed us to do is to teach concepts. We had to teach passing concepts without a ball and our kids understand them better, the QBs understand them better.
Defensively it sucks because we can't really teach our coverages vs anything but WR stems, but it may be better in the end too.

We had a ball in KY yesterday
Of course having to sanitize and all that in between made it not worth it honestly.

I’d love it if we could feed our kids before games. Most of our kids go and eat after school. The kids who don’t drive we provide sandwich stuff for- just wish we could afford an actual pregame meal for the entire team that way they wouldn’t leave the campus. Churches and parents help out with our Thursday meals. Maybe it helps maybe it doesn’t, but I’d like to keep them from accidents or whatever. If we had to show a movie before our meetings that would be fine.

Kentucky March 27-28. Great clinic last year. Where are you finding that at coach? I can’t seem to see anything on their twitter or website.

As far as retaining kids once they get to HS, I think our OL coach does a great job. Honestly a phenomenal job, of developing a culture of OL play. He’s a good guy in general so the kids enjoy being around him, but he does a good job of developing that culture and building them as a group.
I honestly think if we wanted to sell custom “Hawg Squad” shirts, our fans would buy them.
Our HC gets them as much publicity as possible, they had their own article in our area newspapers preseason preview this year. No other school had a story on linemen.
If you want to get more out, winning helps. But recruiting earlier helps. I believe it’s easier to recruit those “lineman” bodies at work he 5th/6th grade level than it is the 7th/8th/9th. Kids get a little lazier by then. More willing to try something when they’re that young.
Then keep them by making it an enjoyable experience. For the team and the OL specifically.

I like it more for defense than offense (and we're a spread/air raid team). There's just some things our scout team can't simulate well in full team. Our DL has been excellent the past two years and our scout OL can't pass pro vs them. 7 on 7 allows for us to take that element away, and allows us to see more patterns and actually get to make plays on the ball/receiver. We do team pass sometimes and when it's for defense there are strict rules foe pass rushers. Not only is the QB not live but they have to stay an arms length away. Don't want our QB breaking his hand on a helmet. They can bat balls down but can't hit the QB. Yeah our scout QB isn't live either. Just seems like the throw is either rushed or isn't as high of quality even though he knows he isn't going to get touched. Definitely still have to have passes during team, I'm just referring to why I wouldn't want to drop it from our defensive schedule.

Good speaker/teacher
It’s nothing groundbreaking but you can use it and your kids can play fast.

If it’s not a running clock, don’t get mad.
Our kicker screwed up a squib twice and we got on it once vs the district “favorite”. HC made a scene during the handshake with our HC.
Keep in mind they had actually onside kicked vs a team up by like 50 and scored with their ones

1. I’m not sure it can get more poor than where we are at and we fundraise our balls off. I’m not sure exactly what our best ones are but we do a number of different ones. Feel like every few months we’ve raffled something off (that people want). Right now we actually have a deer stand in our end zone that we film from that were raffling off. May make enough money to be a real end zone camera id bet.
Sell to the teachers in the school. Poor areas often the only people that make anything are the teachers. Sell a neat shirt design and get a good deal on printing them and you can make a good amount.
3)We’re blessed to have in school weights. Half of our staff aren’t teaching right now, so we practice every evening as far as practice goes during the summer. We give them the schedule months ahead of the summer to give to their employers.
4) We try to be as good to our kids as possible. Yes that’s obvious but we try to get our kids nice gear, feed them whenever we can, etc. we took them to a P5 football game as a reward for attendance.
We make our program the one to be around. We encourage participation in other sports and support those sports too. It’s got us a few kids from other sports that have really helped us this year.

An excuse for everything when being coached
Like I’ll listen to your reasoning for why you did what you did, it might help me fix what you’re doing wrong. But if you have something every time it becomes pretty apparent you’re just making an excuse.
