I'm sure I've posted my share of "dumb" questions on this board - I've had a few go without even one response - but as a young coach I'm constantly looking to see if anyone is thinking along the same lines as me. I will say that I have gained a wealth of knowledge simply from reading the responses (to my questions and others) from posters like Loch and OJW. You guys are helping me discover that I do not want an Oregon or Holgorsen identity lol.

I'm considering this to be a hijack of mercy. I would actually like to go back to now coaching from the sidelines, players have to fend for themselves on the field. Obviously there are too many paranoid control freaks among us, but I think it would make coaching more fun and the game more interesting. I'm just not interested in seeing how many micro-variations on trips a team can pull out to try and get a particular matchuo and leverage to complete a 6 yard out based on a 45 page scouting report and enough guys in the box to form a P-Funk tribute band. This x1000.

Schemes are secondary, people. I watch a Wing-T coach run rampant over "modern" defenses every year. Why? They coach players up how they should be, and they devote themselves completely to their schemes. Anything can work if you have kids who block, tackle, and love football. This thread is insane.

Just as you can trace your family's history back through centuries, you can trace the evolution of schemes to the beginning of football. We coach what I feel is the most complex game around with a million different ways to get in the endzone; it's not as simple as swinging a bat at a ball (not that batting is an easy task). Everything has an origin, and they're probably all intertwined.

In four years of coaching, we probably have the least or next o least amount of talent that we've had yet. I'm stoked, because it means we get to do so much actual teaching this year.

I know it's incredibly early, but does anyone have any information on coaching clinics in early 2013? Holy smokes! Your way ahead of me Coach. Look at the time I posted. I was bored lol

Fourth year as a coach, first as a head coach (middle school). Including myself, I have worked with four different head coaches.
Yep.

I'm going into my first season as a head coach, so I would also love to see what others have to say on this.

No offense to any of you guys, but as a 36 year old HC/full time Social Studies teacher with 2 kids under 7- How in the HELL do you have time play video games. Color me envious. 23, just married, no kids, wife works nights, no grad school until spring

I would be interested in a XBox 360 dynasty. If something happens and I lose the time to keep up with it, just boot me!

I'm about to take over as head coach of a middle school football team. I've been at this school in an assistant position for the last three years, but this will be my first go-round in charge of everything. I'm pretty green when it comes to the off-field duties of a HC (finances, meetings, etc.), but I've been assuming these duties over the offseason so I'm getting better.
This is a very general request, but I'd love to hear some advice, encouraging words, experiences, anecdotes, etc.

Williamstown (421 students 9-12) has been a playoff staple in West Virginia for years. They also hold a state record for consecutive regular season wins. I last remember it standing at 57 games.

From the book, "Our Boys" about the football team in Smith Center, Kansas...."Things disappear a lot quicker than it takes you to build them up." Roger Barta Head Football Coach Smith Center HS I just read that book a few weeks ago. Great read. I was annoyed every now and then by what seemed like overconfidence on the coaching staff's part, but I guess it turned out to be well-deserved!

"Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose" - Eric Taylor
I know, I know. It's from a TV show and Eric Taylor is a fictional coach. I just love the saying.
I also like "Play Hard. Play Smart. Play TOGETHER." Not sure where I heard that one.

Install your base offense and defense. Take care of as much learning as possible so that fall practices can be about fine tuning and getting used to contact.

In my case, a kid who has a one day suspension won't miss the entire game but instead sit out the first quarter or half. I should have clarified that.

If a kid gets in a fight at lunch, I'm DEFINITELY going to hand out some sort of discipline, most likely a hefty amount of gassers or bear crawls. If a kid were suspended from school, I would consider cutting his playing time somewhat. I'm not going to let a kid act like an a$$ in school and then get to enjoy a full football game. Coach, Here's what I'm saying...if a kid gets in a fight at school and is suspended, how can he make practice? If he can't make practice, then he can't play, right? You're exactly right there. I personally have no problem with that. Do you? This was our policy this past season, but the head coach wasn't very faithful to it.

For many kids, participation in sports is the only thing that will keep them from going off the deep end.
I have a student in my English class that, to be honest, is primed to grow up a worthless punk. He's a major problem, but he's also the star of the school's basketball team. He eventually earned so many discipline reports and trips to the office that his status on the team was in jeopardy. He straightened up after that.
The football team is a school extracurricular activity. If the kids aren't abiding by school rules, they should not be allowed extracurricular opportunities. I do agree that the teacher needs to do his or her job and handle in-class discipline independently, but there are cases in which you can do everything in your power and that kid is still a terror.

Great ideas by all. My defensive coordinator and I do our best to keep things in control, but we're 21 and 24 respectively and look even younger. Kids have a habit to try taking advantage of that. Unfortunately, our 30-something head coach would often rather be "one of the boys." He somehow tells them to stop their BS, things get quiet, then he tells his own joke. Incredibly inconsistent.

How lenient are you on your kids during practice? What are your disciplinary methods, other than running their ***** off? I feel I can sometimes be too easy going, which can result in disaster at the middle school level. Had a really rough workout today in terms of focus and behavior and had to run our first gassers of the year.

Our MIDDLE school is constantly the victim of poaching, but from other public schools. Unfortunately, recruiting rarely leaves a paper trail. The weird part is that these kids are going to schools that, while in a larger division, aren't at all as competitive as our high school is on a regular basis. Maybe they just don't enjoy sharing the stage with each other.

I'm Aaron, 24 years old, going into my fourth year of coaching middle school football in West Virginia and third year running the offense. I'm a bit on the young side I guess, but I've been around a variety of offenses. I played in a combination of Power-I and Jet Wing-T schemes and got my start coaching the same stuff. Now that my old coach has left and the high school is transitioning to a new style, I'm learning more about (and falling in love with) the read option run game and the Air Raid. My first loves are and will always be the single wing and triple option offenses!
By day, I'm a rookie 7th grade English teacher and will be getting married in June.

We do a new group for our middle school team each year. We make it private as to keep out any "undesirables," but people can request to be added. We try to keep it limited to players, parents, faculty, basically anyone who is somehow involved with the program. We even include our high school principal and their head coach. We mainly use it to announce conditioning sessions, booster meetings, and so on. Last year, however, we'd also post random questions to test player knowledge (example: What defense do we check to when we see one back in the backfield?) It's been really helpful. I personally think Facebook is crippling our youth, but at least we've found some way to make it useful.
