I am the DC;after every game I sit down and write notes to myself. I write down how effective our game plan was. Did they do what we had expected? What little wrinkles did they have? Did they do something we did not expect? Did it work? Why? What was our adjusment and did it work? I file this info with all my gameplan notes for that particular team. The next year when we prepare for that team, I look at my notes first. Then I start to game plan. This concept has been good for me.

One very important thing we set up when we game plan is who is going to play scout team (O, D, Kicking)., and where he is going to play. When we hit the field on Tues. all coaches have a list of who is playing what scout teams. This has been a big time-saver for us. Sometimes we will have the scout team go off on the side and practice the offense they are going to run.

Entire teams comes in at 8A.M. guys who played Friday night run and lift. Other guys lift and walk through to prepare for JV game (Monday). After the varsity lifts, they stay and watch the game film for about an 60-90 minutes. JV's dismssed after the the workout.
Defensive coaches are breaking down video while offensive coaches run the workout. Entire staff is present for team video.

Kids are divided into three weight classes (170 and under, 171-200, and 201 and above). There are two winners in each weight class; the kid who benches the most and the kid who brings in the most pledge money. If one kid lifts the most and brings in the most money, we will give the second place money earner the award. We do not want one kid winning all the awards (share the wealth). Kids are tested prior to the actual event. They then go out and get pledges based on what they lifted(whatever weight they do do 3 reps). They must turn in their pledges before the actual event. We get local businesses to donate money toward T-shirts; the front has our logo and the back lists the sponsors. Every kid who participates gets a shirt. We also get local businesses to donate prizes (free pizzas, monthly gym memberships, gift certificates for movies, sports stuff, etc). Parents are invited to come and watch; the event is held in our gym at night. We usually get a ton of family members who attend. We have a coach as an emcee who gives info about every kid (favorite team, nickname, grade, etc) and we play music while the kids lift. After all the kids lift, we announce the top lifters and top money earners in each class. We also announce the overall top lifter and money earner. It's a bit of work to set up (the inital testing and money collection before the actual bench-a-thon), but it brings in a nice chunk of change.

We had a bench-a-thon that brought in $7000. We also do Players Choice card (same as Varsity Gold). We make some big $$$ frm the Players Choice card, and it's easy to do.

We adhere to the same philosophy as redandwhite. The only thing on our helmets is the stripe that runs down the middle.

I'm with you ccscoach. We don't allow droopy drawers, and we don't allow hats. Our players must wear school colors and football T-shirts. If they don't have a football T-shirt, we will give them one.

It is VERY difficult to get big name coaches as speakers, especially those who are tied into the NIKE clinics. If you're lucky and know somone, you might be able to get a pro assistant. If you don't have a pro conncection, forget it. My advice is to get local Div II and III guys in your area, as well as coaches from successful high school programs.

We will go to scout the game anyway (two of us), simply to save time. One coach will talk while the other records. Doing this will save us time in that we will not have to "scout the film"; it's already scouted. We can now watch this film for other things (personnel, etc). We do it this way all the time.

My son was a relative big kid in 6th grade. Since we did not have an unlimited program, he would have had to play with 8th graders. I did not allow that. He started organized football as a frosh. He eearned varsity letter as a Jr and started as a Sr.

One school I was (at 30+ years ago), we put on a clinic for women. We held it in the cafe and had them sit on the actual benches we sat on at halftime. We broke the clinic into four quarters (offense, defense, kicking, and basic rules). Midway thorough we had a half time. We went through what a typical halftime would be like. At the end of the clinic we had equipment they could try on. THEY LOVED IT!!!!! I don't know why we never did it again.

We play most of games on Friday nights. On Saturday, coaches arrive at school at 7:30 a.m; kids get here about 8:00. Offensive coaches run the workout (kids run and lift). Defensive coaches scout any films that we have and compile info (we're dinosaurs, we still use pencil and paper). After the workout, offensive coaches come in and look at film (this is usually around 10:00). If we have to scout we are out by around 11:00; if not, we might stay until about noon. After that, we're on our own. The head coach and I (I am DC) often meet on Sunday to discuss game plan and/or ideas or go over any other films.

We focus on what the opponenet runs the most. We look for the top 5 formations used and the top 5 plays run. If the opponent runs 2TE wishbone 40% of the time, 40% of our script will have it in. As far as "trick plays or formations," we will take the time to show our kids this stuff, but not spend too much time on it unless it's run a lot.
Our philosophy is "don't defend ghosts," meaning that we want to take away what the offense has shown they do most and force them to do things they don't like or normally do.

Our actual practice begins with 10 minutes of F.G./P.A.T. After that, the head coach will make any announcements for the day or give the theme of the day. Next is dynamic warm-up, then two phases of the kicking game. Then we go to offensive or defensive drills

We all wear the same shirt on game night (white at home/dark away) and khaki shorts or long pants. Each year the head coach buys some kind of clothing for the entire staff. It's usually a home and an away polo and a windbreaker or sweatshirt. Somtimes it's also a dryfit shirt and shorts. We buy our own shoes, but they are all the same and bought from the same supplier. We want allof us to look the samne; just as we want all our kids to llok the same. If any of us, regardless of the reason, showed up on game night in jeans; we would definitely hear about it from the head coach. I am old school and believe that if we want the kids and the public to think of us as professionals, we must dress like professionals.

I guess I am a dinosaur. I simply write everything down on a legal pad. When we breakdown the video, we simply write everything down. We do not draw anything; we put it all in words (OUR TERMINOLOGY). The only time we draw someting is if we're not sure what to call it or if it is something that we we can not put into OUR TERMINOLOGY. We do this Sat. morning while the other coaches are running the morning workout. Sometimes we can get a game done in an hour, sometimes longer. It all depends on how good a job the vidoe guys did videoing. The next step is drawing each formation and motion on the board and then writing in what play were run from each formation. This does not take as long as the film breakdown. Before we leave, we have an idea of what the opponent likes to do in regard to formations and plays from each formation.

We are very fortunate in that our boosters provide a pre-game meal for all our kids. For a 7p.m. kick-off, we eat at 3:30p.m. The kids get as much fruit and salad as they want, a small chicken breast, some pasta, and gatorade. While the players are eating, we show some kind of college or pro highlight video. We then start our respective meetings.
