YOu never know when you might need film in the future from a team that already rejected you this year, then had the balls to ask you for film?? . Yep. It isn't personal. It's business. I understand that completely and I personally don’t know their HC but they knew we were going to play them and they are in their conference. Me reaching out would have been a solid opportunity for them to get film next year as well. This guy isn’t stupid so more than likely he will never cough up film if he knew the trade ultimately would have benefited him more than us in the long run

Why not give them the film (excluding pre-arranged league argeements)? Some sort of pride thing to prove to them that "ha, nobody screws with us"? Reality is that my HC said no Me personally, IMO they made the choice and said we aren’t trading film on our conference opponents. Why now all of a sudden it’s ok to go looking for film? When it conveniences them it’s ok? I made it clear to my buddy they could have our film if they wanted it and I still got nothing. My opinion is they didn’t realize that they would be in this situation

If your HC is ok with giving them the film I would give it to them. In the league that we play in there was an agreement between all the head coaches that they would not trade league film with non league opponents. That could have been the case here. It may be worth asking this friend of yours why you couldn't get the film when you needed if. If anything just to put some frustrations behind you. Seems like everyone follows that agreement about as strictly as they follow speed limits. No such agreement. HC was being a tight a$$ about film. It’s weird though because I was asking for last years film and we played their opponent in week 2 Anyway my friend didn’t know I had asked earlier this year and my HC said no to giving them film. I, for the record, would not have given them film had it been my choice either

Here is the situation. We picked up a preseason opponent this year that we had never played before.
I’ve got a couple of guys I played college ball with on the staff of a team that plays them in conference and one is the DC.
I ask the DC twice. First time he said he forgot and would go in the next day and send it. It never came so I left it alone (I’m assuming the HC said no)
Now they have a shot at #2 in the conference if they beat this team and the other guy on staff I know is asking me for our game against them.
I’m going to ask my HC what he thinks but I thought it was an interesting situation. Would you give them the film or not?

so we are in a dilemma, I coach a high school varsity football program and am in first year and 0-8 and are very limited in amount of players. at this point we have 17 kids that will dress on Friday but the last 2 weeks we have been running into the issue of players coming when they want and not coming when they want ( yesterday for instance three starters didnt show to practice and again didnt come to school today and are not sick). do you play these kids and leave the impression that practice isnt important or do you make a stand and cancel a game to prove who is in charge..... help veteran coaches!!!!! If you have enough to play I would play. Otherwise you’re screwing the kids who have shown all week and the other team also. Roll them, run them, whatever, but punish them and move on. Play them only if you have to and it says the same thing.

How can you quit a sport to play another sport? Our school has a rule that if you don't finish the season in good standing you can't play in the nexts seasons sport regardless of why. So does ours

I will take 11 guys that fly around and find the ball. Defense is so much harder than offense to coordinate but when you boil it down defense is about pursuit. Yeah you have to coordinate that pursuit but if you can get dudes flying to the ball you’re going to be good on d. That’s true but I would rather my safety understand where his run fit is and make the tackle for a two yard gain than just waiting to see where it’s going and running it down got a 8+ yard gain. I agree. My point wasn’t that run fits weren’t important. Just that if I had to choose 11 guys I would rather have 11 dudes that want to get to the ball and have to teach them the best way, than the guys who know exactly what to do but are straight up vag when they get there.

What happens when you are in your base and they come out in empty and then run a motion into quads. The base defense can get a little sketchy pretty quickly. I think both are equally tactical and take preparation and understanding. I think people tend to overlook that more when thinking about the defense. We had this discussion on the last staff I worked with. Hc: can’t such and such play defensive line? He’s a pretty good athlete. Me: well we have tried him but he wasn’t great at reacting to blocks or spilling the football. Hc: does that really matter if he just gets through and puts pressure on them. Me: yeah, a little bit it does. When he just runs himself out of the play, leaves us unsound in our run fits. Hc: well just tell him to beat the block and find the football Me: would you ever tell your qb to “just read the end” on power read with no other instruction. Hc: well it’s not that simple. Me: exactly Good post. This is an issue that I've run into as well as a DC. I've run across my fair share of coaches over the years that feel that proper defensive football just means "being an athlete, flying around, and finding the ball". It's a great philosophy because you're never wrong as a coach; "we just don't have the kids". I will take 11 guys that fly around and find the ball. Defense is so much harder than offense to coordinate but when you boil it down defense is about pursuit. Yeah you have to coordinate that pursuit but if you can get dudes flying to the ball you’re going to be good on d.

We got the first half in Friday night (winning 28-6) but then weather resulted in the 2nd half being postponed until the next day. The next morning, we find out that due to flooding, the 2nd half won't be played until today (Monday). This is one of the longest postponements of a HS varsity game already in progress that I am aware of. Anyone have similar stories? Pretty crazy that we are still playing a game from last week. If you finish a half here than it’s counted as a complete game. Otherwise I’m the situation with a flooded field it would be required to find another location to play the next day

"I've never been the coach of a "winning" program...infact I have never had a season over .500 (unless you are counting league games only) so I have ZERO problem sitting players to establish rules and expectations. As I've mentioned before I've played games with 5 on 6 in football and 4 on 5 in basketball to get the message delivered" I get that you can be a good coach with a bad record and that circumstance can be just as important as knowledge of the game and skill to teach it but playing games with fewer players than the other team purposefully to prove a point isn't fair to the rest of the team. He provided more information and I'm sure that he is a fine coach but not knowing anything else about him or the situation and I showed up to one of those games I would question his judgment. And you would be correct to question. I talk to parents all the time. I respect your knowledge and your contributions to this community so let me ask you your thoughts on this situation I just had during our last game: I have a player who is small and slow for his age and he was playing his defensive position...getting torched by a kid on the other team. So halftime my assistant coach and I decide to move him to a less athletic kid...my player whines and complains. We start the second half and the change helps...not much, but we are still getting beat by this kid. Meanwhile on offense my player stops running his routes to his capability. I call TO to talk to him. He asks to go back to his Defensive spot. I said no. He throws fit again. I remove him from game. We played 5 on 6 for a couple series. I ask if he is ready to go back in..he asks if it is to his original position. I said no. He untucked his Jersey. I turned back to game. We lost 49-84. There is literally no difference in our offense or defense production with the kid on the field or not. So it isnt hurting my kids. Infact I think they understand completely. 4 of my 6 kids are on IEPs for academic and behavioral issues. This is my first year at the school. I have young men who are directionless and treat female teachers like dirt...They love football so I will use it for all I can to make them understand that there is the right way and the wrong way to act. And if I have to lose football games because of it...then so be it. This is not just my team either. Had a varsity VB captain flip off a ref and cuss her coach out in a game last week. These kids have never had to answer for their actions as far as I can tell. That won't fly as long as I'm here. Even if it means forfeiting. It’s hard to answer without fully knowing the situation or your history with him but I will say it sounds like you have your hands full. Personally, I would have explained the situation and he was going to play that spot no matter. If he quits then there isn’t much you could do about it and life goes on. Judging by his reaction to you when you asked if he wanted to go back in my guess is he probably would have just went and sulked on the bench. I’m not saying I’m against sitting kids for punishment at all, but in your situation it would be the last thing I went to. Plus, in my state if you don’t have enough to play you forfeit so there is that

No offense but if a guy who hasn’t had a season over .500 tells me what he does for “discipline” I’m going to find a different opinion.I like what BLB said. Make ups and if it’s a regular thing just don’t play them. I probably wouldn’t kick them off unless they were just being a complete turd. I definitely wouldn’t play a game with less players than the other team though You are free to take or not take advice from whomever you choose; and I am not trying to start a pedantic type of argument here (especially considering I tend to respect your opinion on most things I see you posting on). But the bolded text is something I think is a mistake. There are many cases where doing the correct thing and winning don't go together in prep football. Often times the outcome of the game is determined by factors- mostly genetics relative to the opponent- that our out of the coaches control....well unless you are recruiting and poaching from other schools. This season will be my first losing season in over a decade as a coach, last year the only team to beat us was the team that won it all. The difference.....relative natural talent. I know of many cases where certain teams are grossly overmatched relative to all teams in their league and on their schedule (sometimes for years on end). Winning and losing is at times outside of the coaches control; moreover, winning pct. does not equal validity of opinion; I can tell you of seasons where we did many things wrong and still went on to title games. "I've never been the coach of a "winning" program...infact I have never had a season over .500 (unless you are counting league games only) so I have ZERO problem sitting players to establish rules and expectations. I definitely wouldn’t play a game with less players than the other team though You're certainly entitled to believe what you want and while my overall "winning" percentage isnt stellar I've never coached at a school with an enrollment over 75. My current FB team has 6 players...just enough for a team. My previous team (girls basketball) had won 6 games the previous 3 seasons combined before I took over. Last year we won our league and had a home playoff game for the first time in almost 10 years.(9-12 overall 5-1 league record) Also was selected as league coach of the year by local media and fellow coaches. When you consistently play schools with 2-3 times the enrollment you have...winning games isnt as easy as it sounds. As I mentioned all the teams have been left better than I found them. But again...to each their own. You probably should have added the rest of that information to your original post. I still find it unnecessary to punish the rest of your team by playing with fewer players to prove your point.

I will parrot much of what was said above. I've never been the coach of a "winning" program...infact I have never had a season over .500 (unless you are counting league games only) so I have ZERO problem sitting players to establish rules and expectations. As I've mentioned before I've played games with 5 on 6 in football and 4 on 5 in basketball to get the message delivered. If I'm the HC and I'm responsible for the product on the field/court then we are doing it the way I see fit. And every program has improved that I've been in charge of. Those who couldn't hang...got off the train. No offense but if a guy who hasn’t had a season over .500 tells me what he does for “discipline” I’m going to find a different opinion. I like what BLB said. Make ups and if it’s a regular thing just don’t play them. I probably wouldn’t kick them off unless they were just being a complete turd. I coached a kid who was probably the most devastating down field blocking WR in the state. Possibly the country in his senior year.
I keep up with him on twitter still. He’s now a multiple championship winning youth football coach and a show stopping basketball and little league umpire who make 29.95 an hr plus bennies and a cell phone.

I’m not going to down play or undercut anything. Even a non school related sport. I just try and sale them on what benefits them the most

He punched him in the helmet(stupid) and slammed him once. After the kid tried to kick him in the balls. Good luck with that assault charge And the kids in the lunch room were beating the hell out of each other like it was Rocky 4. Broke up a brawl at a school one time that was way worse than this. I don't know what film you watched. I saw him bounce that kid's head three times. Once from a seated position to the turf. Once while sitting on his chest (followed by a punch). One last time as he was getting up. Of course the kid is concussed. That's great for the sport. Kids disagree and throw hands... discipline him how you see fit. UIL has rules for that, and his coach should too. Bouncing some kid's dome off the turf is some next level $h!t. That's assault. Agree to disagree. The kid deserves punishment absolutely, but assault is way over the top for what that was.

So someone who doesn’t think a 9th grade kid getting into a fight should be brought up on assault charges is justifying his actions? Me who thinks there is probably more to the story than the coaches telling his players to target some kid is justifying his actions? The fact that 2 kids in full pads got in a fight, which is something I have seen a dozen times, and he says no harm no foul(while I feel this is a very nonchalant way of viewing the situation) is justifying what he did? I broke up a fight in the lunch room last week that was way more violent than this and they got 3 days of oss and you want this kid burned at the stake. Get real He was literally bouncing that kid's head off the turf. Your fight in the lunchroom involved one kid bouncing another kid's head off the floor? You know what they call it when one kid socks another kid and the kid falls as a result of that punch, hits his head on the floor and dies? Manslaughter. Grabbing a kid by the front of the pads and whipping his head into the turf (more than once at that) is assault. Period. You need to get real. He punched him in the helmet(stupid) and slammed him once. After the kid tried to kick him in the balls. Good luck with that assault charge And the kids in the lunch room were beating the hell out of each other like it was Rocky 4. Broke up a brawl at a school one time that was way worse than this.

I don't think anyone is trying to justify anything. Pretty much everyone on here has said that there isn't anything good about what happened. I'm saying that we shouldn't blame or accuse the coaches of sending the players after this one kid until something happens to come out that they did. And also saying that kids do stupid $hit all of the time. Maybe this kid had been talking the whole game or before it had started and the kids had made a decision to go after him. When the little one kicked the other kid the other kid retaliated simple as that. Was it a stupid thing to do...absolutely. But, we all know that kids are stupid It seems that at least a couple of folks were attempting justification after (kind of) saying that the incident was unacceptable. "Still don't see anything warranting a freshman in HS getting arrested for assault." "I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that the smaller kid had been talking $hit on social media all week or during the game if they were after him like that." "All in all, the kid that was "attacked" didn't suffer any injuries. no harm, no foul. Chalk it up to poor sportsmanship." Yes kids are stupid and do stupid things. Getting on top of another player and bouncing his head off the turf is beyond that for me. So someone who doesn’t think a 9th grade kid getting into a fight should be brought up on assault charges is justifying his actions? Me who thinks there is probably more to the story than the coaches telling his players to target some kid is justifying his actions? At the 44 second mark you see #76 slam the kids head to the turf and throw at least one punch. There is no place for it. That isn't "toughness." We have had kids talk crap on social media and call out our kids during the week. We will see you Friday night. You can't hide. But everything will within the rules of the game. This isn't. It hurts our game. Period. I am not going to criticize the coaches from either school because I don't know what they said or did before, during, or after. But what happened on the video is not something to condone or justify, and definitely should not be celebrated. Thank you! What part of the game is that, where you're on top of a player punching him and (much worse, imo) bouncing his dome off the turf? As a youngster, I was involved in my share of fights; but in light of the game already being under fire, bouncing a kid's head off the turf? Are we really trying to justify that? I don't think anyone is trying to justify anything. Pretty much everyone on here has said that there isn't anything good about what happened. I'm saying that we shouldn't blame or accuse the coaches of sending the players after this one kid until something happens to come out that they did.
